Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord: Production Magic Turns a Nameless Village into the Strongest Fortified City

https://myanimelist.net/anime/61549/Okiraku_Ryoushu_no_Tanoshii_Ryouchi_Bouei__Seisankei_Majutsu_de_Na_mo_Naki_Mura_wo_Saikyou_no_Jousai_Toshi_ni

Plot Summary

Van, the fourth son of a powerful noble, is only two years old when he remembers his past life as a salaryman in Japan. With his adult brain in a young body, he's considered a child prodigy...until he displays the "Production Magic" skill when he turns eight. In a family that favors offensive magic, this crafting skill is considered useless in battle, and Van is banished to oversee a tiny country town in disgrace. With only his personal maid, the memories of his past life, and his "worthless" magic, can Van improve the fortunes of this little village—and himself?

Definitely the winner of this season's longest title award.

I was expecting him to have water magic like every other wunderkid.

@runec his magic apparently grew his maid's boobs...or she was assigned as his maid before she hit puberty.

And here is yet another show about some guy being reincarnated as a noble's kid who can will his way to just about anything and everything. And on top of that, he's banished because those guys think his powers are worthless for what it's worth, but that's only because he hasn't tapped into its full potential. To start things off, he buys a guy who was about to be sold into slavery in Kamshin and while it's easy to see why his father deems him worthless, Van thinks he can become helpful in the right hands. Nothing groundbreaking here, but at least it has some intrigue to it.

Even setting aside making magic items, any kind of free production of high quality finished weapons and armor is definitely battle strength.

Pretty decent, just which that opening hadn't basically given everything away. I have no idea why people think that kind of thing is necessary.

I can see why nobles would see that kind of thing as menial or beneath them though.

Have you had that avatar on MAL before, or did you just recently reprise one you had on Crunchyroll forums?

@HOOfan_1 I figured out how to resize the old one enough to fit as a forum avatar, which I had the whole time as my profile picture on MAL.

@MenchiK1 Your profile pic is at the MAL web site level. The little thing on the left is at the individual subforum level, there's a 'Forum Settings' at top right where you can upload an 100 pixel image for this specific forum.

Episode 2

Things are quite easy for Van as even something as he leads a squad to take down a bunch of bandits that have been terrorizing a village, and seeing that a noble just wouldn't dare to get anywhere near this place that it comes as quite a big shock to the villagers. And after seeing just how bad the shape is of the village, Van gives the village a very generous tax break, all while erecting a wall that can actually protect the village from bandits. On top of that, he decided to take residence in this mansion, building his own mansion in seconds using his advanced magic and nanofiber materials. Once again, it goes to show how an OP character with a heart of gold and knowledge from his previous life can do.

It sounds like most people with his magic can't make much with it, but he has the mana capacity you'd need to be able make it useful. It's typical of these kinds of stories that nobles have more mana so it follows along with that.

He should have asked about earthquakes before building that mansion. :p

If I was one of those villagers my opinion of this new lord wouldn't exactly go up when I see that he built himself a mansion while the rest of us are still living in shacks that look like they could be blown down by a strong wind.

I read the first few chapters of a manga that had a very similar story to this. In that one though the MC was sent out into the middle of nowhere to establish a village/town, not oversee one that was already there. And it was just him and a maid to being with.

The part that got me is its not even modest to somewhat match the village. Its huge and fancy just to rub it in the villagers faces.

Episode 3

Nad just like that, Van has built brand new homes for all the villagers thanks to his OP ability to create building materials and construct them in an instant. Things don't get easier than that for a noble kid running this place an everything.

What sort of industry could this place possibly have that the kid can't completely render it obsolete with his powers? There's basically no point in manufacturing anything here because he can just spit out perfect masterworks in 20 seconds or less.

Also how many episodes before he creates mayonnaise?

I'm giving up on this one. It looks like it's just going to have Van breaking the Prime Directive in every episode, giving the local society advanced technology that will destroy them once he's gone. Meanwhile everybody around Van spends all their time gushing over him.

They introduce double blimp lady mid-show and then don't even explain who she is...maybe do that at the beginning of next episode instead

I notice in the show page on MAL though that double blimp lady is named after three separate models of Porsches

I'm wondering why the hell the village is even where it is. Sitting on dirt, a good trek from the nearest water source, it makes no sense until they build a canal and a lake. Even with Van there, it would have probably been better to shift themselves closer to the river unless there's some aspect of the landscape I'm missing. Possibly a major road?

I also wondering what he's doing about waste. Sewage is a thing, and there wasn't any mention of plumbing. Just a bath supplied by "water magic" In real medieval moats that's what all the local sewage drained into (convenient, plus helped discourage swimming invaders) but apparently they're planning to drink from theirs.

Well, nonetheless I'm finding this a cheerful watch even if it's pretty light on actual drama. I almost laughed at the villagers huddling in terror behind the massive fortifications at the end. I'm fairly sure the next episode will begin by the armored lizards plowing face-first into stainless steel walls and being soundly defeated in under a minute.

Don't forget it's sitting between two warring rival kingdoms and basically hasn't been wiped out yet because its too remote for either kingdom to find it or care about~

In the manga the village walls are built right up to the edge of the mountains and on cliffs to either side so its like a dead end canyon. That doesn't seem to be the case in the anime. The village's wall enclosed territory is much much larger in the manga. Absurdly large even.

I don't think the various artists and animators are checking notes with each other.

Yeah I was wondering why the village was in that spot too. If there's no access to water they sure weren't growing much in the way of crops there. The only thing I could come up with is because the forest was was pretty close. They could forage there for food, common in medieval villages, and get lumber. That still leaves the water issue, though the old guy said they were fetching water from the river.

If I'm the local lord I don't want to be the one who constantly has to make everything for the village. They definitely need a trade item that the villagers can work on themselves.

Ballistae with shields on them are kind of self defeating if you can't see what you're shooting at.

As for why the village is where it is, looks like it started out as a fort with no real forethought to the best location for the villagers livelihoods.

Man it was driving me nuts every time they mentioned the lizard meat would spoil and he didn't think about a way to store it. I thought for sure he would suggest building a freezer or digging a underground storage area and someone using ice magic, or salting it, or smoking it, or any of the other myriad ways (look them up) to preserve meat. Oh well missed opportunity. Rest was fun as usual. Though kind of odd these lizards had never attacked before they were suddenly prepared to kill them, though how would they have gotten over the moat? wasn't that the whole point of making it. Boobs and the young girl were fun. He should have immediately told her he prefers older women when she said she would marry him if he were older. Are they really going to pair him with this little girl? Well I guess once she grows up they can have lots of gray haired babies.

Well the harem is growing pretty fast now. Don't ever remember seeing freshwater mer-people before. Hey can you help us with our waste we dump multiple times a day into the river? You mean the river we were living in until we moved into your lake? Suuuure......
Damn royal parents in this world are all a-holes. I was hoping for a little more "bounce" from the knight and maid playing volleyball, of course only the guy loses his speedo...

If he wanted to have a private conversation with Arte why in the world did he take her on a boat out onto the lake full of mer-people?

I'm still not entirely sure where the sewage goes, maybe a huge septic tank deep underground? Nothing else would be "downhill" from there. I'm also not sure why they have to "flush" it with lake water - if he could make sewer pipes, why not running water in the houses? Even hand pumps would do the job and he's certainly capable of creating those.

And I agree that the lake was an odd choice for a private conversation

Not a very smart dragon all things considered. Smart enough to dodge the ballista but not smart enough to retreat when its wings were burned thus making it hard to dodge ballista.

@SparkyBob

I love how the demonstration shows it hitting near the mountain range in the distance, yet when the dragon is just outside the walls he yells "shoot when it gets in range" 9_9 it was in range the second you saw it! Also maybe tell people not to shoot all at once so if it dodges one way it flies right into the line of fire of some other people.
