Plot Summary

By the mid-21st century, Tokyo's criminal underworld is ruled by Demon Lords—crime bosses who have undergone ether enhancement surgery, granting them terrifying superpowers. The only ones who can take them down are Heroes, bounty hunters who boost their own ether powers using the drug E3 (E-Three). With legalized killing as part of the job, being a Hero is less about justice and more about survival.

Yashiro, known as the Reaper, is one such Hero—an independent enforcer who works alone. That is, until Jougamine, a high school girl and self-proclaimed "apprentice," forces her way into his life. Reluctantly taking her under his wing, Yashiro soon finds himself caught in a whirlwind of deadly conflicts.

Episode 1

It begins with Yashiro, a Brave who only operates solo and is authorized to kill if the job requires him to do so, heads to a lounge that only Braves are allowed in and is not exactly a place for children. But three girls led by Aki stumble into the place as Aki had been looking to learn under Yashiro, and after pulling some shenanigans and stuff Yashiro reluctantly agrees. It turns out that those kids don't just go to any ordinary school in Shibuya as they attend a school that trains assassins.

While the show hasn't done much so far to convince me it's going to be worthwhile as it's mostly setup, the artwork is really nice, and I especially love that ending animation. Not to mention the school uniforms there as they are both cute and appropriate for combat. In any case, while the show has potential, it hasn't shown what it's capable of doing in the first episode, but seeing that the show is getting two cours that hopefully it means something great comes out of it.

Meh this seems pretty amateurish. Kinda annoying how they kept translating Yuusha as "Brave", doesn't it mean "Hero"?

I'm just going to mentally translate it as "hero" all the time.

Well, the show manages to meet my minimum standards. The quality is definitely suspect, though. I'll keep it on trial for a bit and see how it goes. If it gets too goofy for me, I might have to abandon it.

The Brave is coming from the show itself, for whatever reason it's using English for "Brave Academy" on the badge.

Rambling etymology:

yuusha is made from the kanji 勇者 bravery+person

A literal translation is 'brave one'.

It's come to primarily mean "hero" resulting from JRPGs which, especially early on when characters didn't even have names, would have NPCs refer to the player character with a descriptor, including yuusha. The standard basis was you were some courageous person volunteering/voluntolding to save the world from the demon lord. You hadn't necessarily accomplished anything yet.

Over the decades it's become common to simply understand yuusha as 'the hero of an RPG or fantasy story'.

Yuusha-paatii hero('s) party refers to the hero and the other characters that travel with them. The 'kicked out of the hero's party' animes lately often use yuusha-paatii.

Since the directive to use 'Brave' is coming from the Japanese side, they were possibly worried about calling their in-world academy a 'hero academy' due to a different major series. Though the MHA uses the Enrish 'hiirou' instead of yuusha, both would turn into the English word 'hero' if you let it.

yuusha ゆうしゃ 勇者
Common word
Noun
1. hero; the brave; man of valour (valor)

I think the intent though is yes, it should be understood the same way as JRPGs. These are like little hero candidates and the drug lords they fight are known as demon lords (Maou).

I dunno about this one. She falls off a tall building and lands on her head and is fine - big laffs! but a few minutes later Yashiro stomps someone's brains out. She (Jo) reacted a couple of times as though she was seeing something significant, but I had no idea what it was. Overall it's a bit clunky, but I was intrigued enough by the ED which showed Jo in various uniforms (disguises?) that I may watch another just to see what the show actually is.

Oh, and FWIW Scum Of The Brave is a kinda cool title and definitely better than "Scum of Heroes" would be, IMO.

And I've seen yuusha translated as 'brave' in a different series but I don't remember which.

@SparkyBob I have to think that was chosen as a play on "Home of the Brave" on the English side of things seeing that it is the final verse of the national anthem.

Episode 2

Yashiro and the girls go on their first mission together to take down the Count of Amber Thorn seeing that he's a total pushover that would serve as valuable training experience for the girls. After making quick work of the thugs, they make their way to fight the leader. Yashiro uses a smoke grenade to see the count's thorns as they are hard to track with the naked eye, but easy to see with the smoke. But after cutting off his arm, he regenrates with an arm that is not only strong, but has a mind of its own making it hard to read. But just when it looked like Yashiro had lost this fight, in comes Aki to slice it off as it turns out she has powerful mind-reading abilities. Pretty silly way to resolve the battle there, but it goes to show that these girls make a good team.

Aki is such a weird character, actually this whole show is weird. And why does she even need a teacher if she can read minds? She should always be one step ahead of anyone she fights.

Okay, I'm going to have to retract my previous comment about the show meeting my minimum standards. The character art is just too goofy looking for me. Aki's eyebrows, for example, are really getting to me. I'm giving up.

Wait, is that Kenjiro Tsuda voicing the bad guy? The guy who also plays Fushi's creator in To Your Eternity and Jonas in Gnosia? I like his voice acting. Oh, well. It's not a good enough reason for me to stick around.

Episode 3

It turns out that Sara's father is none other than King Arthur, who is a company CEO, and he gives Yashiro his blessing to whip his daughter into shape. As such, Sara keeps on hanging around Yashiro there realizing that she stands to learn quite a lot from the Reaper even if he insists that she's trying way too hard just to flatter him. And so, Yashiro comes across his next enemy, who is somebody he knows quite well in the one known as the Wedge of Both Hands, and his henchmen. He's quite the formidable foe there. So while Sara thinks that she can use her family's fortune to get what she wants, she has to earn Yashiro's trust and being pushy like that isn't going to do it.

This show reminds me of an old school show, in a good way, so at least it has that going for it. Something different in the sea of endless recycled tropes.

The show- at least the 1st 2 episodes- has a bad case of mood balancing. The sudden flips from cutesy comedy to serious made it feel like a comedy action trying to take itself too serious. The 3rd episode has the most proper balance so far, but probably because there was less Jougamine. xD

Speaking of Jougamine, my enjoyment of the show so far comes mostly from the adorability of hearing Commander Kyouka's being an airhead xD The dynamic between Yashiro and the 'Braves' seems fun. My only hope now is that this remains a wholesome mentor-student connection and not get creepy.

Episode 4

Yashiro is quite desperate for a new job realizing that eviction is just around the corner, and seeing that his students wouldn't let him take on one of those shady jobs that he's in a bind. So for the next gig, Aki and Yashiro go out together to a Shinjuku night club in plain clothes as there's a drug ring operating in it. And then Aki barges in having found out a guy flirting with two girls who he plans to drug. It turns out that this guy has mind-reading abilities as well, albeit working differently than Aki's. This guy is in cahoots with a woman known as the Verdigris Quarter and is a minion of a Demon Lord. So Yashiro decides to settle things with a duel as all he asks for is for the two girls to be released, and he wins to finish the job. This goes to show just how much of a mood maker Aki is there as she's a stark contrast to Yashiro's serious persona as he just wants to stick to business, all while with Aki's sense of justice being a policeman would have been better suited for her than as a Brave and ends up being too much of a handful.

Kinda too goofy for the darkness of the story. I mean they just rescued two underage girls (looked like they were 12 what were they doing out?) from being raped and it was kind of comedic. Aki is growing on me...a little.

Right? It was like "Well, they saved THOSE 2, but what about the future victims, and how many minors have already been." Kinda hard to find the comedy jabs in those situations funny when they tackle very serious matters. I think it's trying to be a Gritty Action Comedy but failing to do it right.

All that said, Jougamine's stupidity is just so fun to watch. xD

Episode 5

As a requirement for graduation, the braves at the academy must do public service, and they need either a teacher or a professional to supervise them. As Sara's father is the headmaster and has been against Sara becoming a hero that none of the teachers are willing to help, meaning that she needs a pro brave. So she turns to Yashiro and together they look for a missing dog at an abandoned mall. It turns out there is an underground animal shelter where the missing dog is, as well as several missing zoo animals that includes the panda in the news. A kid tries to sneak up on them, but Sara catches him. And then they encounter Wedge of Both Hands as he's a minion of the Dark Lord of Kabukicho, the one who is behind this cruel experimentation. He sends the drugged panda to fight them, but Yashiro easily defeats it. Yashiro gets paid quite a lot, but has a big debt to pay back as he's a gambling addict. In the meantime, Ishino is being recruited by Kay of the Round Table company, but he declines. This ended up being much bigger than it looked as Sara just wanted to get the public service requirement met, but ended up stumbling into something much bigger than that.

Well her powers are pretty average, sees the type that are only good in a group with somebody with something more offensive since she is just a normal person in a fight. Killer panda went down way too easy.

Episode 6

Yashiro is quite the huge fan of King Rob, and he will do anything to get his hands on a ticket to see him compete given how extremely difficult they are to get. The retired unofficial Brave has a ticket, but he needs money quickly. However, the girls have a job for him and gets paid in advanced as he is being paid to train these girls. So with that, they start their training right away by breaking into the school in the late night seeing that typical missions will have them breaking into a place. And then they train with the girls having all sorts of problems, but the biggest one of all is their lack of killer instinct. Apparently they got a different message about braves not realizing that depending on the job, assassination might be required as they see braves as champions of justice who do everything but kill. And then a couple of security guards approach them, but it turns out they are not security guards, but E3 users who tracked Yashiro into the school. So given the situation they were initially going to just hit and run, but now they just need to focus on running away. This training mission turned out to be much more than what Yashiro bargained for, and he can't exactly tell if he's a good teacher or not.
