Along with the supernatural content, this episode definitely gives off some horror vibes. Kaya is considered a troublemaker but is fearless against the supernatural monsters. She's also more mature than she looks. Unfortunately, it looks like she's considered af reak by her classmates.

Even the adults see her as anything but normal. I read the manga for this for anime before and it retains the mood I was expecting. Kaya is still decorated with a cute, innocent look despite her abilities though. Good start.

The next Dark Gathering is here...or rather, Mieruko-chan's sibling with mangaka Taro Yuri's lone horror series.

Isekaijoucho's OP certainly isn't scary, but is sure has the vibes of one.

The kindergarden nursery where the 5-year-old Kaya Sato is withholding certain things from the other kids, she has the inept knoweldge of evil spirits going for her, and even knowing how to deal with their threat as an exorcist herself. And sure, Kaya isn't scary by face value, but it's that dark and sinister image that shows her who she truly is.

Her supervising teacher Chie Hasumi always being at the brunt of handling the girl as the constant troublemaker of the kindergarden, though she came SO CLOSE to almost unravelling the evil spirits residing within the books that Kaya taped up, for safety reasons. And it's truly that point where Chie knows that Kaya is somebody to pay attention to, though this remains unaware to everyone else in the kindergarden.

A regular day where the girls' toilet has a cubicle blocked because of evil spirits, the blocked premise prompts Kaya to protect the girls from using it, though one of them doesn't listen, and gets right into the affair of the spirits, leaving Kaya to come to her rescue. And even when one of the teachers Akira chided her for breaking the door, Chie coming to her defence is quite the save for dirtying the toilet, as is the girl who apologized to her thereafter for causing trouble in the first place. On top of it, Kaya's father, though the respectable parent figure he is, is not privy to evil spirits which Kaya has to fend off every now and then with their mother being an evil spirit on her own.

SAK & TAO's 2nd ED for the season alongside Kaya's VA, this is the arguably better ED, though not by much...

A scary start this is one, it's horror though at quite the inept timing...

Child need adult that trusting them, glad we have Chie Sensei.

Nobody believes the children when they say there's ghosts, and nobody believes the adults either, luckily for Kaya, she has Chie-sensei.

@Halqifibrax Fr, horror is one of the least common genre's for anime, and not only that, there's a lack of horror anime that's actually good. I think semi-recent horror anime that have tried to be more dark & disturbing, or just simply don't try too hard to be scary and end up failing, tend to have the result of being much better.

There's definitely some older horror anime that's good, but overall it's more mixed than what we've seen recently, for example Mieruko-chan.

They made the 1st EP especially light-toned, but also has the Ebisumoris appeared in the OP & ED, which mean we'll get to them in this season as well... I wonder how they'll address the tone shift then... I rly hope they wouldn't tone down the darker tones in latter EPs.

So this is basically Ghost Hunt in kindergarten setting.
Chie-sensei must be at least partially sensitive to evil spirits (or obakes, or whatever those are), since there are situations in which she can see them.

@Rafael2AMerlo Yeah, I have never watched any horror series (despite having Another and Summertime Rendering ready-to-go). I love live-action horror movies, but have been too much of a wuss to try a horror anime. Is this show really that accessible? The premise seems interesting, but I'm wondering why the anime has such low ratings compared to the manga.

@Frosty it’s been one single episode, give it some time to level out a little, the MAL ratings are always a little weird since it’s based on it’s user base which is always weird with ratings.

Good PG Dark Gathering like show.

I can't stand the glitchy effect they use when the ghost appears. It literally gave me a headache. They use it way too much and it makes the show borderline unwatchable for me.

Interesting start. Kaya comes off as a cute little troublemaker while going around getting rid of all the evil in the world.

Not sure if it’ll be my kind of show yet, but I’ll give it the usual 3-episode rule and see how it goes.

@uncleqrow The director for this also handled Dark Gathering, which oddly enough it also had tone shifts, especially early on with the first few episodes. In Dark Gathering’s case it was more so just a bumpy start situation due to it being the authors first work, but I’m not too worried about this one. If anything the animation production from East Fish is going to be the most likely cause of any issues with this adaption.

@Frosty Hi Frosty =)

I do consider it very accessible. And I do not consider 6,86 a low score, 7 is what is considered "Good" and so far in my personal taste for just one episode I'm previewing a 8-9 for me.

Also, MyAnimeList has a strange bias with scores in general. There are some shows I gave awful scores that have a 7+ rating, and many I gave 8-10 scores that are in 6-7 ratings. Don't be disincentivized by ratings: if you're taking your time to check a forum, you can readily take that time to watch the first 5min of the first episode ^^

@AdrianFTW99 This bothered me too. My eyes were hurting on the first monster. It fortunately toned down after that, but we'll see.

I'm somewhat interested, but it isn't obvious to me where we go from here. I don't think this is going to go full shounen like Dark Gathering where she's training to save mom, but it won't be interesting if it's just more of the same since she's too strong to feel menaced like Mieruko. Maybe about her gaining the respect of the class?

@Frosty To add to MewsicMagic and Rafael2Melo's responses: not only is the MAL rating system a bit off (shows that have 7 I consider good, even shows that are 6.5 are generally well enough to be watched) but this rating is based solely in less than 200 people giving it it's vote.

For show to get a realistic mark, in my humble opinion, at least several thousand need to grade it. And also do not forge the reviews that are important part of forming an opinion as they are written by users after all.

Still, I bother with gradings and reviews only after the show ended and only by people who watched entire thing. If a person drops show on personal bias that is alright, as we all have different taste after all. But if the person watched 3 or 4 episodes and rated/review the show I consider that invalid as you never know if the show itself will be good or bad based on just 25% of coverage for the story.

My advise (and also how I watched anime in general) - if the show's premise is interesting enough to draw you in then give it a go. After all, we watch generally on our own taste and enjoyment and maybe for a little bit surprise and amazement. In that regard it is important to read the show descriptions and if it sounds like it may be interesting to you then give it a go and judge for yourself if you made the right decision or not.

That is how I am watching this anime - I have no idea about either manga or LN (if there is any), I just read the description and said "this looks interesting, let's give it a go". And so far I am not dissapointed at all, will that remain by the end depends solely on how show progress.

Kaya may or may not be scary, but she's 100% hilarious. The fact a kid at a daycare could pull one of the realest "I am so done with this place" faces ever had me dying.

Those who compare Kaya-chan to Mieruko-chan are completely wrong. The only thing they have in common is that both have ghosts and curses and heroines capable of seeing ghosts, but if it were a comedy, it wouldn't be funny at all, and there is much less humor here. This series can be compared to Dark Gathering, The only difference is in scale, and the main character looks a bit like Eiko, and judging by the opening, the emphasis here is on the plot, which is good, because if it followed the manga exactly, we wouldn't get any plot development in the first season.

Decent start for a ghost hunting type series in a kindergarten setting. Guess we'll get lots of episodic stuff before Kaya faces her mother.

There's also a strange mystery with her mother and Kaya having strong psychic powers?

Probably the first seasonal I've ever followed that doesn't air at Otaku o'clock. 2:30 AM my time.

Good start introducing the premise with all the ghosts attacking the school. Kaya is both savage and cinnamon roll. Must protect. Or be protected by, more likely. I hope Sensei helps her make lots of friends! Maybe some more wholesome moments with the dad, too.

This was a pretty good start. As a fan of the manga i have to say that this adaptation is looking good. Of course everything is made on a budget and it shows but the show is pretty to look at and the VA's are on point with the characters and thats the most important part for this story i think.

Ok so there’s a couple shows that apparently drop late at Saturday night, a witch watch and yozakura situation I guess, but wow this was great! Welcome back Dark Gathering and Mieurko Chan.

You can really never get enough of these supernatural horror anime, it’s a severely underrepresented genre. Kaya having to balance her life as a regular kindergarten student with protecting everyone from evil spirits which are constantly trying to hurt them seems exhausting! Not to mention your mother being held captive by some evil spirit that even you as the greatest psychic can’t defeat! I wonder why spirits keep latching themselves onto her family and why that one in particular went after her mom? Maybe her psychic ability is hereditary and it detected her as a threat?

Anyway, seeing Kaya casually punching evil spirits in the face despite her small frame is so funny lmao and Chie sensei thinking Kaya is a troublemaker because she’s battling spirits in the background also had me cracking up. I don’t think she’ll be opening anymore books that Kaya says not to lol. Respect to Chie for taking the blame for the bathroom situation at the end! Micchan reminds me a lot of Becky from Spy x Family too.

I’m hooked, this’ll be fun to watch Saturday nights.
