Out of curiosity. It seems like a progress (the greater the number, the farther the progress), but then it's not percentage like 0 to 100%. The number seems random. What do the "x/23" or "x/33" counters mean? It seems to increment up at a rather random time too

I think it's more like chapter, scene or event in the game? I just assume it like that.

@yagami_kirizu well I thought there's more to it than that because why would they be numbered in the first place? If it wasn't numbered how would that affect the story? Considering part of the story is from the perspective of the narrator (told like a diary, but why?), I thought it's more of the chapter/page count in the diary. But I doubt about my guess

This is also how I interpreted it.

As a ln reader, That's the literal amount of chapter of each arc...
It's adapted word to word but more cinematic... Faithful adption...
This and the next arc each will take 3 episodes...

@DeityNyxCiara-_- Oh, I get it now. Thanks. Although I still don't understand why the anime needs to number the chapters in the first place. I also remember the episode skipping a few numbers before 9/33, unless I misremember it (don't feel like rewatching it again)

@RealNath Some stuff are skipped... Like in arc 1 momono cutted yukki leg for her, yukki told her if she dies so will you, so she was angered and was cleanly able to cut yukki leg off out of anger... In the Aoi's death game, Kinko slid the lever all the way up because she was too short much like aoi to reach the key... This is why her hand's cut off...
Some other info... Regarding EP 1...

The chapters numbers are labelled to give us a sense of nauseia that something terrible is soon about to happen as it get closer to the end...
This arc might take 3 episode... Because nothing can be skipped... The 6th girl in gown was pretty, so i'm kinda sad they didn't show her face, but it was poetic... Yukki was about to touch Mishiro's hair because he thaught it was pretty af...

well just saying but in Kaoru Hana they also always included the chapters (although after the ending iirc) so it's more like telling people where they are in the adaption 🤷🏻‍♂️

I feel like this point really exaggerates that slow moving yet seemingly impending doom they’ll face

It reminds me of CG counters in Visual Novels.

someone said timestamp of each game, another said chapters of each arc.

I never had the chance to read the LN so which is it please?

section numbers of each chapter.

Has no one ever read a book? There are plenty of other anime that timestamp the scenes directly from the LN

Ghost House #28 is because it’s the 28th game she played. The 1/23 is the literal chapter number in the light novel

As for why they show it, well it's definitely a stylistic choice. Maybe, as someone mentioned, the director intends the countdown to add tension. Maybe it's just a cool/original way to do transitions, maybe it's supposed to give a sense of progression in a story that takes place in closed and similar spaces. Maybe it contributes to the sense of pacing.

Until we don't get an interview where this question is asked explicitly, we get to interpret and decide how it makes us feel, why and how.

Director Ueno also added dates that probably corresponded to light novel chapters in Days with My Stepsister. It seems this marking of light novel or manga chapters will be one of Ueno's signature in his works going forward.

ETA: I suddenly remembered. I've seen similar gimmick in the film '500 Days of Summer.'
