From what we've seen so far, this world is still seemingly firmly in the Middle Ages, technology wise atleast. But, in this second episode, we have also seen multiple ruins of very modern technology such as the tank at minute 2:33 and the furnace with metal piping at minute 3:23; not to mention Tatsuya's Pickelhaube. The design of the tank specifically, since, even if it's a toy, it would have to be based on a thing that actually exists in it's world, suggests that it is a post WW1 model (possibly inspired by a KV-1).
So, could these references be simply be artistic expression or something actually plot relevant? Perhaps maybe a post apocalyptic scenario.

The lost civilization trope in fantasy anime is the absolute worst. You absolutely can't change my mind.

@Chalc_ Wow, man, it was just a tank! This world is extremely militarized, meaning weapons are the focus, and that should be obvious. Just look at the weapons of mass destruction shown in episode 1, they have a pseudo-nuclear bomb that can be carried, but a tank is the problem...? Why do I even bother answering this.

Not "very modern" lol. I mean, tank looks almost identical to "Type 4 Chi-To", which was a ww2 Japanese tank.

I'm not a fan of this choice at all. It felt extremely out of place in my opinion. What's worse is their decision to showcase that exact tank. I mean, that type of tank is not "that complex", especially compared to actually much more complex tanks we have today, like Leclerc, M1 Abrams or Japanese Type 90 tank. It also goes against the notion that humans of the past were advanced enough to build goddesses. Now, for a "medieval" person, ww2-style tank would seem incredible and alien too, but let's not forget the fact (again) humans of the past allegedly had superior tech (even when compared to real world!) and could build "goddesses". So why make trash like Chi-to? It simply feels like a very poor or lazy choice.

IMO best choice here would've been if they simply showed an alien, totally unique to the story design of a tank. Like, if we saw something akin to AAT Battle Tank (from star wars) that shoots lasers instead of bullets and regular shells. We as viewers would be as confused as characters in the story who have no idea what they're looking at or how that thing operates. It would feel more genuine and make it clear humans of the past were certainly more advanced. With unique design we'd have hard time questioning how no human managed to replicate some part from said tank until now (like machine-guns, at least, from Chi-to).

So much headache could be avoided by the introduction of unique design. I guess the author may have decided it wasn't worth the effort to create a unique model or simply chose the easy way out (or lazy) and that's why we got what we got.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if the tank is anime-only thing? I wonder how it was described in LN, if it existed there at all!

Dawg I haven't even seen the second episode yet, and who said I enjoyed the first? Quit following the bandwagon and making this entire show your personality. Only arrogant ones get so defensive.

@Sigmar-Unberogen I understand, so you just wanted to show off your knowledge about tanks.
I don't judge you, besides, the first nine minutes of episode 2 are original, and of course 90% of the background scenery is original to the anime since the world design function, which is very uncommon, is present in this production.

Why pretend to be surprised. I already said that average person doesn't know much about tanks; just like the people who thought it was a good idea to put said tank in the anime lol.
I do indeed know a bit about tanks. It's not even a flex of some sort. I just know, and that's exactly why the scene sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

And thus solidifying my assumption about "lazy/lack of creativity" even further. Why bother imagining a unique model of a tank if you're likely not going to show another one ever again right? Unfortunately this original decision backfired (at least IMO!!!). I won't bother explaining why I think so for the fifth time.

The "modern era" starts around the 1500s, so WW2, in fact, IS "very modern" history. I literally acknowledged that it is likely a WW2 design.

The "goddesses" and "advanced weaponry" seem more magical in nature than scientific. The people themselves seem to be using mediaeval technology. The fact that these artefacts seem in ruins and that they still use spears and primitive "ballistae" instead of similar tanks to propel the "thunder magic" suggests that they are not the ones that developed the tank and other artefacts. This only adds to my initial post apocalyptic theory, as it could literally be a WW2 world which had something happen to it and humanity had to start over with these new magics.

The creator has shown ability to create unique weapon designs such as the "thunder ballista"; calling them lazy now is just presumptive without knowing the actual story they are trying to tell.

Probably a vague implication that isekaiers exist or an equally vague implication that this is a post apocalyptic setting.

I’ve seen this plenty before and I never expect anything out of it. It’s usually just that: vague.

I mean sure, if the old world was similar to "Tanya the evil" (ww2 but with magic), ww2 tank can make sense. I would still call it lazy though, especially if this isn't some alternate universe Earth (like in Tanya), but a completely different fantasy world. It just ruins immersion IMO. You're free to disagree on that.

Wouldn't be the first nor the last time creators do sometging so cheap, and I get it, only few legends bother to create unique models, cities, languages, creatures. It's always easier to just copy/paste existing shit.

I'm not saying that it *isn't* lazy, all I'm saying is to hold out judgement till the full vision unfolds.

@Sigmar-Unberogen I could satisfy your complaint and make you shut up, but I'd have to give away a spoiler, so it's up to you.

@Sigmar-Unberogen just put him on ignore like I did, and I suspect a legion of other users have. He is an extremely unpleasant individual who should have been banned from commenting long ago. Thinks he knows everything, thinks his point of view is the only permissible one, and is relentlessly aggressive about it until you realize it's a complete waste of time to interact with him at all.

Uhhh....getting back on topic. The world appears to be post apocalyptic where technology has regressed in certain fields. There obviously is magic in this world. So I wonder if it was a DoomHalf-Life scenario where modern humans opened a hole in reality to some other realm and released the blight while bringing magic in to the world. It wouldn't surprise me if that was happening while also being covered up considering the Temple sounds like some of the shadiest pricks out there.

@Lost_Raven Well, I would say that the explanation for the advanced technologies inspired by real-world things was already shown in episode 1, but not explained.
I imagine that the explanation for this question will be revealed within a few future episodes.
