I watched the first season of Frieren, though I put it on-hold after episode 11 since I was focusing on playing MMORPG at the time and felt that the formula of "Random village number 43094309 with irrelevant background characters" was getting stale.
I felt that I was proven right, since in the comings weeks people seemed to be talking less and less about Frieren.

...then came the Mage Exam arc. Screencaps of those episodes made it seem like a COMPLETELY different anime of a different nature.
I came back when the anime was releasing episode 23 or 24, and I did enjoy a lot the Mage Exam arc: Not for it's fights, but for the fact that it vastly expanded the anime's scope and worldbuilding in a more tangible way, as well as bringing recurring characters that seemed interesting and had cool interactions with one another.

Well, now Frieren has gone back to it's "status quo", and every Friday I feel like I'm looking forward to the newest episode of Hell Mode: Yarikomizuki no Gamer wa Hai Settei no Isekai de Musou suru than t the newest episode of it.
Probably my lowest point has been today, where I couldn't even remember why Fern and Stark were on a date (I remembered the first half of the previous episode, as well as it having a flashback o Frieren crying... everything else felt like "noise" in my memories).

Do I just... not fundamentally like what this anime is?
It's not like I dislike this genre of anime (Characters traveling and meeting random people in a semi-episodic fashion. I liked Shigofumi and Kaiba, after all)

you pretty much sound like you've got that much figured out on your own; don't get why you need someone to reaffirm that for you.
if you can't enjoy a piece of media that is meant to be entertainment, then you shouldn't force yourself to go through it.

It just might not be for you, that's okay. On my first watch, Frieren didn't interest me that much honestly, it was only on the second time around that I connected with the scenes. It was like I was experiencing the same thing Frieren does lol

If you're trying to find ways to enjoy watching Frieren, I'd recommend two video analysis YouTubers, pey talks anime and Comfy Lilin
Also a Kaiba mention!! Wooooo

Yeah, it doesn't seem like the basic premise of the show appeals to you. That's okay, don't force yourself to watch it! What you watch should be entertaining and engaging for you OP, life's too short to spend on stuff you don't enjoy, so go watch Hell Mode, and enjoy!

Watched half way through the first ep of S1 got bored of it, thought it was going to be the typical comfy boring slice of life fantasy. Dropped it. Came back to give another crack at it as it was airing ep 8. Kept up with it, experienced peak. Been one of the more fantasies I regard highly.

You should just stop watching a show if you aren't enjoying it anymore though, without needing others to tell you it's okay that you aren't enjoying a show if it has a high popularity of others enjoying it or not. I watch shows to completion that I don't like so when I rate them I have complete context of the show's merits, but I set that standard for MY rating system that way even before joining up MAL. (Currently trying to clean up shows I did drop)

A lot of people dogged on "The Water Magician" for being misleading with the quality animation of the opening. Made people think we had another Mushoku on the horizon just for everyone to be disappointed from expectations. I enjoyed it for what they had going on. I make the comparison since a lot of the criticisms were saying "where's the action?" "the pace is so slow." I would say the same thing, if it's not being enjoyable for you then just drop it.
Though Frieren being Frieren it might do a repeat of S1 where the beginning is slow then some fight or something is going to happen later on with us still early, on the 4th ep.

It's a character-oriented show and not plot-oriented. That's why it's actually irrelevant if they spend every episode in a different village.

This formula is a major reason why Frieren became so successful in the first place: It hits the sweet balance between slice of life and high octane content.

My idea is that if you really like a character, you'll enjoy every second of their screentime even if "nothing happens". So my question is: how much do you like the cute autistic elf hag? Probably not enough, since you said that you particularly liked when the story focused on worldbuilding and secondary characters (two things Dungeon Meshi does much better, whereas Frieren is fundamentally and singlehandedly carried by the protagonist).

and youll feel more free once you stop looking for affirmation for these things from other people
watch what you feel like watching and ignore the rest, watching anime isnt a job and you dont have to watch things other people like if they arent for you.

Yeah during the episodic beginning of S1 I thought I like the atmosphere, but now I'm just putting off episodes for a week+. Maybe it just needs a certain mood to enjoy, maybe it's plain boring.

Episodes feel forced, like something made for a weekly manga where the author didn't feel inspired to write anything but had to due to publishing contract.
Some plot points turn the world building up to this point upside down, and then are promptly forgotten next week. Cheapens the experience to the level of sitcom where everything is purely for comedic effect and every week everything goes back to exactly the way it was before.
Case in point: magic nullifying crystals. The humanity hasn't figured out any way at all to mine and process them, really? To the point that nobody ever mentions them? Seems like an easy solution to all the demons with overpowered magic just walking in and massacring nobility's guard like what happened last season with that blood guy.
Another case in point: nobody is allowed to travel to the north without an super elite mage for escort, and yet commoners live a completely normal life about as dangerous as in the south.

@JaokRnd bro. I watched 100 animes so far, not all of them are at the same lvl as frieren. But to appreciate such masterpiece, you must be mature enough. Why dont you mention other animes from my list, like 86, Dororo, Chi, Death Note, FMA, Steins gate, Vinland saga? Come back to talk when you’re older than 30 and have a proper job, a wife, kids, cara and a house of your own. Then we can talk aboit maturity kiddo

@Yayoo9
Other than than you criminally rating Vinland Saga S2 and 86 part 1 both at 7 (diabolical). Why'd you have the need to make it a dick measuring contest now. Next it'll be about how successful you are than us.

Speaking from america the housing market sucks ass to put a down payment on a single stable income source unless you're making 120k+ a year. Just from general inflation and not experiencing a economy shift like it did for covid throughout the decades of you paying your mortgage. Unless you want to just go in debt for a typical 300 - 400k that has the rooms for a nuclear family (master bedroom, 2 rooms for the kids, and 2 bath rooms) just to foreclose your house to the bank at exceeding interest rates leaving you homeless.

Entry level white collar jobs are being sidelined from AI (thats getting better every year) by having more experienced people do the work of 2-3 people with the help of AI just from the IT side and firing the entry level people to cut costs from the company. Since employees are always the highest cost to a company. So it's hard to even be hired into a entry role at a company if you want to work in the white collar sector. It's already happening for artists from gaming companies. Just look at the trend of AI being implemented from Activision's micro transaction art for Call of Duty. And voice actors, from the language models of AI getting better and better every year eventually replacing them to cut costs like Amazon using AI to dub some animes they had going on, scandal by how bad the AI performed but it's only a matter of time until it gets good enough to be passed off from hiring real actors.

This tirade sounds like someone that got to experience the economy at a good time while I was a child other than the 2008 recession from a gen X. Or how boomers still got to experience the american dream from just working at their low wage, low skill job that could afford to pay for a house and a car. Telling me "you're just not working hard enough kiddo."

Should've saved money for a down payment of a house while I was 6 years old in the early 2000s when houses costed 100 - 200k with lowered interest rates than the present 😔

@Yayoo9 Playing the "you'll understand when you grow up, it's a series for mature audiences" card is so cringeworthy and bad, especially considering the series. You don't have to be 30+ to understand Frieren, because the main themes are hammered into your head without any subtlety. For the guy above, it's seems not a series for him, and that's okay. Frieren isn't some outstanding, original work without flaws.

Frieren constantly bounces between its slow paced slice of life content and its actual worldbuilding and storytelling. Well, constantly, but slowly I guess. It might be worth it for you to wait until it's completely wrapped up to really give it a go then to see how you feel.

Ngl I watched the 1st episode and dipped after that. I think it has lots of mass appeal, but no anime can cater to everyone. That being said, I do appreciate the hentai it spawned. Kind of like my relationship to gacha games where I like the art side, but avoid the game.

@rohan121 liking the hentai and not particularly caring for the source material is my same exact thing with One Piece. Never cared of that show since I stopped watching the first episodes circa 2000, but I've consumed some hentai of Nami without a sweat.

facts! I enjoyed the water magician for what it was. I feel like the problem is people going into things with certain expectations and getting upset when they aren't met.

Dude, are you expecting us to validate your thesis? You came to the highest-rated anime on MyAnimeList expecting someone to explain why you didn’t like it. Frieren has always been this. The Mage Exam arc was a deviation, not the core identity of the series. If the status quo doesn’t grab you, then maybe it’s just not for you — now or ever. You liked it precisely when the show stopped being itself. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
