EPISODE 1 SUMMARY

Ookouchi Sakuya, 17, has one talent: music. Cold-hearted, caring for no one else, he makes decisions by flipping an American quarter. It seems this coin is a keepsake of some kind. The prodigy gains employment as a hotel lounge pianist by stunning the manager with a flawless rendition of a certain song, after merely glancing at the sheet music. Surely this will bring in the female customers – including a mysterious and beautiful lady in red, who notices Sakuya immediately.

Nagai “Santa” Yoshihiko, drummer for the indie band Climb, comes early to a rehearsal, only to find his girlfriend Yumi embracing another band member. Hotheaded and impulsive, Santa decks the interloper, stomps out, and announces that he’s quitting. When Toudou “Yuki” Yukifumi, guitarist and band leader, learns of these events, he quits also. It’s not as though either of the two young men has been terribly satisfied with the group anyway.

Meanwhile, Sakuma “Towa” Kazuto, bassist for the group Neon, decides that he is tired of a band for which good looks seem more important than quality music. Yuki and Santa scout him at a concert, but cannot convince him to join their band, Lucifer, before all members are in place.

EPISODE 2 SUMMARY

Following a lead on a vocalist, Yuki and Santa appear at the lounge where Sakuya works. They are smitten by his beautiful voice. Afterwards, Yuki slips a minidisc into Sakuya’s pocket: “Just listen to it. We’ll be back tomorrow.” Unfortunately Sakuya seems more interested in seeing the Lady in Red, than in joining Lucifer.

Few teenagers in the world want to be a rock star when they grow up as much as Kiryuu Atsuro does. Although he has full support from his older sister Yuuka, their father wants nothing more for his son than to work hard at school, get into a good college, and finally earn a stable, respectable office job. So do Atsuro’s bandmates.

Towa has had it with Neon and decides to quit. He heads over to the Cradle, a live house and bar, to cool off. By chance, Atsuro and Yuuka have decided to relax there a while too. Just before Yuki and Santa begin their live performance, whom should they spot but Sakuya? He has listened to the MD and come to the Cradle as they requested, but still considers joining them a waste of time. Santa, however, comes up with a plan to force Sakuya into singing with them just once. Towa and Atsuro cannot resist jumping out of their seats to join in. The resulting lineup of five is more than the sum of its parts. Towa and Atsuro immediately agree to join Lucifer. But what about Sakuya? Kotowaru, he says: “I refuse.”

EPISODE 3 SUMMARY

Santa, Atsuro, Yuki, and Towa are tempted to give up on Sakuya joining their new band, yet are certain that they experienced something special that night at the Cradle. They almost stalk Sakuya for most of the episode. Nothing helps, even as Sakuya’s and Santa’s strong personalities repeatedly clash. Sakuya prefers to spend his spare time with the Lady in Red. Until, that is, he is scouted by Radical, a band just turning pro. Sakuya impresses the entire staff at his audition. Ore wa takai ze, Sakuya warns the producer: “I’m expensive.”

It is all starting to wear on Yuki, the only son of a long line of Noh performers. His parents expect him to carry on the family tradition in spite of his dream to be the leader of a rock band. Yuki’s father starts to exert some pressure on him. Meanwhile, to the Lucifer members’ chagrin, Sakuya makes his debut appearance as the vocalist for Radical. Backstage, Radical’s previous vocalist appears. It seems he had not left of his own accord, but been fired. Though Sakuya is uneasy about the whole thing, no one could say his debut was not a success.

No one, that is, except for the four Lucifer members. To their ears, Sakuya’s voice was dead in the Radical concert, but comes to life when he sings with them. Their final attempt to convince Sakuya to join them comes to blows. The next morning, however, Sakuya flips his trademark quarter: Heads, I join Lucifer; tails…

EPISODE 4 SUMMARY

Although the coin turned up heads, and Sakuya has joined Lucifer as its vocalist, his attachment to the group can only be called tenuous. Yuki continues to try to impress on Sakuya the importance of aiming higher and striving to be more excellent, to find their sound as a band, but Sakuya seems interested only in having fun. One wonders what will happen when Sakuya is no longer having fun.

Nonetheless, Lucifer keeps improving with each performance, drawing larger crowds each time. Atsuro’s sister Yuuka continues on in her informal role as the band’s manager, a task in which she seems to thrive. Arriving early at the live house “Helicon” for their performance that evening, Lucifer decides to relax for the rest of the afternoon – and Sakuya takes off on his own. Who should happen to drive by Sakuya, but the Lady in Red?

After dinner, Sakuya’s escort wants to go for a drive rather than return him to the Helicon for the performance. Finally it becomes clear that she more or less wants to kidnap him, even over his protests, saying that he would have more fun than at his performance. The result? A live concert with no vocalist.
