The Twilight. It was a place he knew well, it was a haven that he retreated to when the violence, the hate... the crime, go to be too much. Rock was straddling a line, possibly the most dangerous line in the world. It separated the normal people from those in the city of the damned, Roanapura. A city with filled with the bad of the bad, there were no saints in their city... saints ended up with an extra hole in their forehead to drink out of. A city of prostitution, outright gambling and crime.... it was a city of death and war where people went wild. People like his partner Revy, Two-hands as she was sometimes known as. He had seen her in action more times than he could remember, waving her cutlasses around like it was the days of the old west, smiling that smile that told him she enjoyed it. At first he had been horrified, almost ill by the fact that he could enjoy such a thing... now he could smile at it and think. That’s my partner Without much difficulty. Now his partner was lying there with a hole in her shoulder, staring up at him with tearful eyes. He had never seen Revy cry before, he didn’t think she had tears, just the smile of the devil and occasionally the look of the dead. Now she cried, and not for herself... or the pain that she would have laughed at normally. She cried for what he had just done.
“Rock... You son of a bitch! Why did you...” He didn’t let her finish, he put her good shoulder around his shoulder and lifted her. She rose in pain, she cursed, calling him names and offering to give him a new asshole. Holding her good arm around his neck, there was no way she could. He dragged her along, making sure to pick up the cutlass that had fallen away from her, the one that had just been fired; the smell of gunpowder chocked the room... the stench of blood lingered on the nose and tongue. It was so thick you could taste it. He knew they had to be away, more would come, more would arrive and taking the head of Revy ‘Two Hands’ was too much of a temptation for him to risk. He looked at her again, she wasn’t looking at him, her tears had stopped and she was now looking at the ground. “You look like shit, aibou*” He said, not much humour because he wasn’t joking. She glared at him and shouted. “And whose fault is...” She looked away again, ashamed of what she had been about to say... he knew and he decided that it wasn’t something to joke about.
The hotel was their sanctuary, a haven offered by the Church of Violence. He entered through the back and up the fire escape. Jane, Benny’s girlfriend, wasn’t the last to have used it and they weren’t going to be either but he could use a bulletproof wall and door right now... especially one people didn’t know was there. Revy didn’t make any more noise, she didn’t complain about how much her arm hurt, she didn’t complain about how she was pissed off with him. She didn’t make a sound. Rock looked at her and found her staring blankly at the ground. “Oi Revy.” She didn’t answer. “Revy, say something.” She didn’t respond. He spun quickly and pushed her onto the bed, she flopped down not even a peep. “Shit! Revy! Answer me!” He slapped her face, not too hard but when she didn’t respond he leathered her, slapping as hard as he could, leaving a mark on her. She was fading and if she lost consciousness, he might as well throw her out the window.
Rock took his finger and jammed it in the bullet wound in her shoulder. Her body shuddered as she moaned her eyes rolling, he put two fingers in then spread them. Her other hand grabbed his shoulder as she let loose a little scream. It was short and clipped.... but he had never heard that sort of sound from her before. Sweat beaded down her face as she looked at him with clouded eyes. “S-stop! I...” She was able to finish as her grip weakened and her head fell back to the bed. “Don’t do that again...” She mumbled, slightly delirious. He got to work, there were bandages and alcohol to clean the wound. He poured a liberal amount of alcohol on her shoulder, which caused her to gasp and writhe in pain. She grabbed his blood-stained shirt but said nothing. He began to wrapper her shoulder with bandages, making it tight to keep the pressure, but not too tight.
When he was done, she gave him a look and asked. “There should be a cold one in the fridge, pass it to me.” Rock went to the fridge and brought her water. She sneered. “Did someone stuff shit in your ears? I asked for a goddamned beer! Not water!” She threw it away with her good hand. “What the fuck? I get shot once and suddenly you’re my mother!? I got shot, I want some beer!” Rock just looked at her. Her ire died down rather quickly. “The alcohol will make you bleed more... I’ll give you a little whiskey if it hurts.” She seemed even angrier when he said this. “You think you know better than me? You think you finally grown a pair of balls to boss me around?! AH!” She was challenging him, even though she couldn’t get off her back from weakness, even though she was fighting the pain. She was still fighting him. His eyes went cold as a bullet. His words were the gun. “Killing two men does that to you.” He said and then he walked to the window.
She lost all fight as her face slackened into a sorry look. She tried to say something but managed an “I’m sorry.” He knew she meant it... she blamed herself. He had once been told if he ever fired a gun, his bullets would ricochet back and hit them. How right Dutch had been, Revy was feeling the bullet right now. As she looked at Rock who wasn’t looking at her, she was feeling the pain. It was her fault that he had killed two people... it was her fault he had been shoved out of the twilight because he had done it to save her life.
