Barren demonic ridden lands? Robotic horses? Bishounen silent Hero? Ostracized maiden with the mini-skirt?

Damn this is old-school, much better than its successor; Amon Saga (same art director, includes supposedly D's cameo). Vampire Hunter D is no matter what, considered the first anime movie to spark interest amonst a wider international audience.

The session for the first Series of the Month Discussion is now open ^_^

How do you people regard the animation quality compared to the other 80's anime/cartoon titles?

Ok here goes, Lengthy

Graphics/Animation
Im so-so torn apart with this one, Animation Quality for a 1985 anime is... well ok... not comparable to stuff like Zeta Gundam though imo
Animation is generally good, although theres some flukes here and there

Story
Now here comes my devastating hammer! I don't like clichéd stories like this one at all, silent hero, virgin maiden.. oh please.. that was old even before this anime was old :p (Original Gundam, anyone?) And theres alot of holes in the story...

- I really dont like when they don't stick to the "Vampire Lore", i never heard that Vampire Ghouls REVERT BACK when the originator of the course dies... That is a handy story makeup but it strikes me odd nevertheless (Vampire Lore -> Vampire Bloodlines the Masquerade) If you are curious and if im not totally mistaken now, Ghouls would Live on despite their master dead...

- Ancient Vampires have alot more Powers than just "staring evil" by Lore, Half-Vampires (Dampeels) can achieve the same level of power though, so atleast this makes some sense :p (What doesn't is how he killed the vampire lord)

Hehe, yeah that griped me ~.~

I really liked the Setting and the Main Char, i didnt like that girl, obnoxious out-of-this-world stupid and naive, apparantly japanese anime was struck by THIS course long before 1985 ;) Oh yes, going Demon Hunting with a mini skirt and no armor, talk about suicidal...

The second movie redeemed this Anime for me though, that was actually awesome ;) (And made alot more sense) And it was Lore-Conform

My rating: 6 overall

yes I agree with you on the cliches... although its a movie there is no explanation why D has a face demon on his left hand? It reminded me of that priest in Inu Yasha (vortex for a hand)...The ending was typical for some western cowboy with the desperado riding off into the sunset. And because its japanese they needed a reminder of that so the hero yields a katana-style sword.
The 'yanking-pendant-yet-incidently-revealing-breast' move was commendable; totally MTV awards standard.
When I think about the plot... man its too simple; but there just isn't any further character setting (background) to make it more engaging.
5.5 in my book :)

WAS it me or did D's hat shadow never leave his face? It seemed like he was constantly wearing a zorro mask xD

Nah wassnt you, although the bad colors (curse of all older anime) didnt help either, i mean did you see the starting scene with the breast move, that looked like straight out of an ega computer game... as for story, it can be put into 5 sentences at most, i know theres actually a DEEP backstory to this (some manga/Books) but from a sole anime standpoint the anime was hacked together and really loose at that..

But if you ask me, Anime is one of these things that doesnt age well, and the more good you have seen the less you can stand these clichéd stories (although i watched Spriggan recently and kinda loved it .p)

I bought this anime on dvd, I don't know, I think more than a year ago, and I watched it back then. I didn't watch it again now, because, well even though I bought it on dvd, it's not really something to watch a second time ^_^;

The only thing I remember from this movie is that I was laughing the whole time. I know it was supposed to be horror, but it's so old it all looked really funny. The only moment I was scared was when it looked like he was gonna bite the girl.

I actually would have never watched this if it hadn't been for one of my friends. Generally I don't want to have anything to do with vampires, there about the most cheezily cliched thing anyone ever writes about. VHD though managed to do very well by me and I've now read most of the books. With the content present in the novel I really wish VHD had ended up a OVA (or a full anime following the novels) because the movie definately suffers from the missing content. I really like the animation for the movie, and it stands as one of my more favorite anime movies.

Not to mention that Vampires are immune to both Magic and Diseases :P (Possesion included)

Also not to mention that Vampires are technically DEAD and without blood they would cease to exist within days (even mighty vampires might only live a week without) Also Vampires can't Suffocate (that includes Half Vampires) since they are allready dead, they also dont need to sleep or eat

I really wish someone would make more movies that incorporate Dungeons and Dragons Lore :P

So even then a Demon on his hand would make little sense (if it is a parasite thats like not very logic either, vampires beeing undead beeings and such...)

Speaking of, i wonder if Vampires are Undead Beeings or just Infected Living Beeings.... im confused ;) ...... Not much else to say ;)

Left Hand is a symbiote that was a demi-monster in the service of Dracula (a certain someones father) some time ago. Its a parasite that's unique among his race. The Vampires in the VHD universe are different then vampiress of D&D, Anne Rice, or the actual mythological creature. Possessing high levels of technology and bio-science the vampires are responsible for most of the unearthly creatures and such that reside on the post-apoc earth. The weaknesses and abilities of vampires throughout VHD are also widely different from other sources, and usually differ between individuals (D and Dracula being prime examples).

Yeah, considering the 2nd Movie is quite alot more Lore conform (i mean, actual Bram Cohen, or what was his name :p lore) i think the makers just made stuff up to be different

Thanks for the info though Acinoyx :)

That said, why do they call the Vampire Father of all godlike first beeing "Dracula" if its not actually Dracula (and thereby original Lore) conform, then they could have just made up new names imo, and call it a new lore... i dont get anime makers sometimes (or was that a side kick to the japanese audiences lack of lore knowledge?) I mean both DnD and Dracula Novels lore...

Considering this was 1985 without big Internet and such that sounds actually plausible

I wonder if theres Vampire movies that incorporate DnD lore?

Demi-Monster you say? Demi-Lich i say! ;) (wonder if theres any movies about Lichs too)

Hideyuki Kikuchi seems to have an obsession with Dracula, he's even written a novel about Dracula in Fuedal Japan. DnD is actually pretty well known among some older Japanese, did you know that Record of Lodoss War is based of the creators favored DnD characters? The thing with vampires is there can be no true copyright on them being a cryptozoological creature and a legend. Anne Rice be damned she tries to copyright them (I created Vampires! Durrrrr) but alas she is an airhead. I've never heard of Liches being in movies, but I'm sure theres some B-movie horror flick with something thats kind of like a lich :)

On second thought, having a Demi-Lich in a movie would make for some very short end fight, heroes enter chamber of demi-lich, demi lich turns around, movie over (well, if they follow actual DnD Rules like Immunity to magic/weapons etc .p) and Immunity to TimeStop :p

Baldurs Gate 2 .. ah good memories (with Ascension and Tactics (both mods)) Kangaxx ftw ;)

As for Anne Rice, she must be joking, she wrote the FIRST book about Vampires 1973 and (im sure i dont have to tell that :p) But Dracula is an 1897 novel by Irish author Bram Stoker... her claim is just PR-FUD

As for Vampires lore, i still prefer the White Wolf's lore adaptions with several clans with different abilities each.. yay :)

I've never been one to get into all that D&D and stuff like that, too many rules and too much of a learning curve. I stopped playing Magic the Gathering so many years ago because there were too many stupid rules and you couldn't use your older cards. (I mean come on, if I can summon a 5000/5000 Krakklen or whatever it was called with trample and prot red/black plus over 10000 hp for myself, I should be able to win right?)
