I've heard a lot of people saying that we can't blame Claude for killing Alois because he's a demon and this is his nature, but actually I think that what he did goes well against the nature of a demon.
Demons' purpose in life is to eat souls. So why do they make contracts with humans and don't just devour random souls to sustain themselves? I think it's like asking why a human doesn't simply go hunting animals and breed with anyone instead of wasting time with things like civilty, social rules and marriage. It's because both demons and humans are more complicated than animals. A demon chooses to make a contract with a human soul because he finds that soul special, just like a human that commits himself to another person finds that person special. They both do the same thing, only in a different way because of their different nature.
So humans and demons are very different yet very similar beings. Then why do Sebastian and Ciel manage to make their contract/relationship work while Claude and Alois don't? Let's see:

Sebastian and Ciel: Sebastian committed himself to Ciel and to Ciel only. He himself said that his soul and Ciel's cannot be parted until the contract is fulfilled. Even the fact that he's lying to Ciel is a way for him to show his love towards his master because if he told Ciel the truth, Ciel wouldn't be interested in getting his revenge anymore, and he wouldn't become once again the avenged soul Sebastian wishes to devour. This seems horrible if we look at it from a human perspective, but it's the demons' way to love humans.
At the same time, Ciel cares for Sebastian. We discovered it in the first season, during that episode about photographs that show who's the most important person for the subject of the photograph. Sebastian is important to Ciel, but Ciel "refuses to open his heart to the demon" (I'm quoting Yana Toboso) because he knows Sebastian is not a human and he doesn't want to expect anything from him that Sebastian cannot give him. They found the perfect balance, and they work perfectly together.

Claude and Alois: let's start from the fact that Claude commits himself to Alois and then he eye-f***s Ciel. This is the main reason why things didn't work out between him and Alois. Claude doesn't understand at all what it means to commit oneself to a human, while Sebastian does. Alois knew that Claude was a demon, and he accepted it. He simply wanted Claude to behave towards him the way Sebastian does towards Ciel. Claude didn't want to (because he seems to despise the way Sebastian is attached to Ciel) and that's why everything crumbled.
We can't say that it's Alois' fault if things didn't work out because he showed affection towards Claude when demons don't want their masters to show affection towards them. When Sebastian discovered (through the famous photograph) that he's the most important person to Ciel, he said he was honoured. When Claude discovered Alois' real feelings towards him, he was disgusted. That's the difference. So it's not an insult for all demons to discover that their masters care for them, it's Claude's personal, psycotic problem.
He doesn't understand what loyalty is because he's not a demon (because demons can understand these things, like Sebastian does), he's a WILD BEAST. He doesn't deserve to be called a demon, because we've seen the way demons act and how loyal they can be, and Claude doesn't understand these things, so let's call him an underdeveloped animal, but NOT a demon.

You have my deep respect for creating this thread on a very interesting issue. Thanks very much Astrid_!

As I said, Claude's behaviour is way to different from Sebastian's towards his master.
So it's like Alois is attached to Claude - and Claude hates that, but Ciel still has to open up to Sebastian so he didn't act like Claude? Maybe if Ciel acted like Alois, he'd do the same?
But I still think Sebastian sort of has a heart - unlike Claude. As you said, it could be Claude's own problem - he's a freak.

Hmm...I wonder what he is if he's not a demon. Maybe there are "good demons" and "bad demons" :/ We'll just have to wait and see...that is if the creators planned on explaining things fully.

First of all, thank you ^^

I think Sebastian would like Ciel to open up to him, because when he discovered that he's important to Ciel (during that episode of the photographs) he said "I'm honoured". We know very well that Claude would have been disgusted if he were in Sebastian's shoes. We get to know that demons have feelings (though their feelings are different from humans'), but Claude doesn't have any, so he's a monster among demons. He's a kind of... prehistoric demon because he represents the raw desire demons have to eat souls, while Sebastian is a more developed, civilized kind of demon.

The way Claude acts makes us feel very sorry for Alois who is... well f*ed up in the head but, we can also look at another point, when Claude get's a taste of Ciel's blood, the foundation for the soul, he get's all kerbobbled and basically orgasms over it, yet Sebastien is able to keep his cool with Ciel's blood around, it makes sense that Claude would be more animal than the refined Sebastien.

To make a comparison, Claude is like an alcohol addict that a bottle of the finest wine was set before him, where as Sebastien is like some aristocrat with a great understanding of fine wine that has the finest of wines set before him, let's face it Sebastien founded the Black Plague he has much more class than Claude

OUCH! X3 WHOOO!!!! :> .......... BACCANO! Rules.

@Astrid_ that was extremely well written and I think everyone should read it ^^ and the term "Prehistoric Demon" suits him perfectly! Even if he was just a butler he still didn't have enough class and refinement. The way he just did a complete 180 and totally abandoned his master (who was DYING) just lacks higher thinking, I agree.

I don't believe he changed his nature. I believe he was like that ever since the beginning and that he suddenly acted against his nature. Claude is acting like a demon, and we must accept the fact that he is one...and yet, he is a very clever one indeed.
Don't get me wrong, I still absolutely hate him..but if you think about it ALL demons are like that. It didn't really surprise me Claude was the way he is.
In the beginning, we saw Claude as a loyal butler demon, am I right?
Well, something about that seemed fishy to me. Why is Claude so obedient?
Why does he put up with this all? Well, back then I thought it was simply and obviously because he wanted to devour Alois' soul..then..WHY?
Is Alois' soul really special? No. It was because he wanted to use Alois and get Ciel's soul.

Why do I hate Claude then? Not only is it because he killed Alois..(even though I ABSOLUTLEY hate him for that) the true reason behind my hate is because he can act so calm. It's annoying. It REALLY pisses me off. His attitude really pisses me off.
He's so cool and collected, SCREW HIM! After he kills a whole village or wtv, "ahhh noww to get aloisuuu~" /skip skip skip

Alois: I LOVE YOU!! (basically..okay I don't want to type out all he said and this pretty much sums it all up)
Claude: - VOMIT VOMIT VOMIT - /KILLS HIM IMMEDIATELY AFTER SAVING HIM

Sooo basically ~

Claude is a demon -> Yes, I agree
Claude is acting like a demon, and he is one -> Yes, I agree
Claude is a butler -> NO.NO. NOOO!!!

wtf is up with him? thinking he's a butler after he kills his master, and the when he's
like masterless he goes and steals another master.

This makes so much sense. It is really logical and gives a wonderful explanation. **Applause** Amazing. And now that I think about it...Claude is uncivilized in many ways. ^^ Bravo.
