I've heard a lot of people saying that we can't blame Claude for killing Alois because he's a demon and this is his nature, but actually I think that what he did goes well against the nature of a demon.
Demons' purpose in life is to eat souls. So why do they make contracts with humans and don't just devour random souls to sustain themselves? I think it's like asking why a human doesn't simply go hunting animals and breed with anyone instead of wasting time with things like civilty, social rules and marriage. It's because both demons and humans are more complicated than animals. A demon chooses to make a contract with a human soul because he finds that soul special, just like a human that commits himself to another person finds that person special. They both do the same thing, only in a different way because of their different nature.
So humans and demons are very different yet very similar beings. Then why do Sebastian and Ciel manage to make their contract/relationship work while Claude and Alois don't? Let's see:
Sebastian and Ciel: Sebastian committed himself to Ciel and to Ciel only. He himself said that his soul and Ciel's cannot be parted until the contract is fulfilled. Even the fact that he's lying to Ciel is a way for him to show his love towards his master because if he told Ciel the truth, Ciel wouldn't be interested in getting his revenge anymore, and he wouldn't become once again the avenged soul Sebastian wishes to devour. This seems horrible if we look at it from a human perspective, but it's the demons' way to love humans.
At the same time, Ciel cares for Sebastian. We discovered it in the first season, during that episode about photographs that show who's the most important person for the subject of the photograph. Sebastian is important to Ciel, but Ciel "refuses to open his heart to the demon" (I'm quoting Yana Toboso) because he knows Sebastian is not a human and he doesn't want to expect anything from him that Sebastian cannot give him. They found the perfect balance, and they work perfectly together.
Claude and Alois: let's start from the fact that Claude commits himself to Alois and then he eye-f***s Ciel. This is the main reason why things didn't work out between him and Alois. Claude doesn't understand at all what it means to commit oneself to a human, while Sebastian does. Alois knew that Claude was a demon, and he accepted it. He simply wanted Claude to behave towards him the way Sebastian does towards Ciel. Claude didn't want to (because he seems to despise the way Sebastian is attached to Ciel) and that's why everything crumbled.
We can't say that it's Alois' fault if things didn't work out because he showed affection towards Claude when demons don't want their masters to show affection towards them. When Sebastian discovered (through the famous photograph) that he's the most important person to Ciel, he said he was honoured. When Claude discovered Alois' real feelings towards him, he was disgusted. That's the difference. So it's not an insult for all demons to discover that their masters care for them, it's Claude's personal, psycotic problem.
He doesn't understand what loyalty is because he's not a demon (because demons can understand these things, like Sebastian does), he's a WILD BEAST. He doesn't deserve to be called a demon, because we've seen the way demons act and how loyal they can be, and Claude doesn't understand these things, so let's call him an underdeveloped animal, but NOT a demon. |
