My suggestion would be to add a "Similarly Named Clubs" list to appear before you can create the club. Since the majority of the duplicates are from ignorance of the club search.

One of the main arguments I have heard against duplicate clubs is that they "drain members from the original club or cause less members to join them". I do not really see this as a significant issue however, but I believe duplicate clubs should be merged into the original clubs to have one club serve one purpose. Not only would this deal with the extra weight upon servers but would also appease those who wish for the original club to gain the members who wish to join a club dealing with the specific issue at hand.
For example, the three duplicate clubs seen here, http://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cn=sos&action=find can be merged into the original club, The SOS Brigade.

Like Forum Mods, there should be Club mods, those who check most clubs and merged/delete useless duplicated clubs.

Also, A time limit between making clubs. To prevent doubles created by hitting the create button twice.

How about a system where you can't have the same/similar name as the other club? Like keywords of the club name for example. Like typing in the name of your club in a search box that will show all the relations/keywords to that topic or subject before actually forming the club. This way it will force users to search before creating. All of this would be part of the club creation process; not an as individual process.

Basically, putting the search box in the club creation process.

Another suggestion: Consensual merging of two club.

A club would send a merger invitation to another club with the agreement of all admins & officers of the club. Then all admins & officers of the invitee club would accept or deny the merger invitation. After all the admins & officers of both clubs has agreed, all the members of the club with the lowest userbase would be dissolved into the club with the highest userbase. All admins & officers would also be transferred to the other club, retaining all powers. Then the empty club will be deleted. Also, there would be 2 creators in the merged club, so one can't be removed by the other.

I support imposing consequences on those who would abuse their responsibility to create clubs. I believe that if a member were to create one duplicate club, then they should be given a warning to notify them that such a club exists, their club will be deleted and they will be informed that further infractions in this manner will result in their ability to create clubs being temporarily or permanently revoked. After a second offense, the individual should have their ability to create clubs revoked for a one month period to show that the consequences will be enforced against those who would abuse their responsibility to create clubs. If a member were to again repeat the offense for a third time, then their ability to create clubs should be permanently revoked to prevent further duplications.

I know what you could do. You always have the option of changing the clubs detials, which means you can change the name, relations, and pictures. THey could always just change the club into a club for something else. There are a few Lucky Star clubs out there, they could change one to something else, like, mecha fans, or anything, as long as they change the name.

It would be easier for the admin to delete the club and create a new one.

I am now beginning to agree with the "club moderation idea", but I would like to state that only public clubs should be moderated. Private or Secret clubs, even if they are duplicates, should not be anyone's business except that club's admins and it's members.

I'm seeing some people made clubs and then became inactive at MAL. Since the members can't do anything to update it, they make a new one. Take Gonzo clubs for example. In this case, before someone duplicate that inactive club, would Xinil let an active member moderate it they PM him?

I thought of it as a simple solution but it's also bothering him at the same time. Not sure if the other MAL staff have the ability to admin someone on a club besides Xinil. Good? Nay?

Yeah, like the "adding a character" interface does.
