The idea is simple: I'll announce a show in a new thread every Tuesday (randomly chosen, just because today is Tuesday ;)) and that'll be the potential new topic of discussion each week.

Of course you are all free to suggest anime for the next weeks (and for our anime relations, for that matter ;) )

Due to a rather busy week coming up for me we have: Kigeki

"Legend tells of a lone swordsman who lives in the Demon's Castle, the ruins near the Black Forest. This mysterious stranger only accepts rare books for his services, books from the ancient past. Comedy tells the story of a young girl who desperately wishes for her family and village to be saved from the coming English soldiers' wrath, and is willing to trade a precious book in exchange for the deed. With only her legs beneath her, she runs towards the Black Forest, hoping to get there in time...

This very pretty, yet very rare anime is a 10 minute short movie that was contained on volume 3 of "Grasshoppa!" which is a serial DVD of Japanese short movies and animation."

Really poetic... and well, artsy XP

The girl reminds me a bit of the girl from Angel's Egg, little with long white hair, don't you think?

The story was alright, but I think that what made this show a masterpiece is the way it's done... The animation, the atmosphere (gothic/romantic feel), the "style", ... It is one of my favourite shorts from Studio 4C, the others being, sometime, missed experiments...

For the "Grasshoppa!", I didn't know about it... I need to check that :P

Beautiful indeed. I was especially impressed by the music which blended in perfectly although there were actually vocals in it. It's definitely great indeed, the 10 minutes of the film felt like 5.
I wish we'd get to know which book it actually was. I think it would be much greater if it were an actual funny book, because, if you think about it - how many books that are considered classics or masterpieces are funny?

I have never heard of the Grasshoppa before, but Kigeki makes me want to check out the others too now.

On a side note, xaemar, I need a nice citation as forum signature like yours, haha.

As I wouldn't like to repeat what has already been said (with which I agree anyway), just two points:

I actually enjoyed the German vocals, despite understanding them! (However strange it may sound, that this might hinder my enjoyment.)
The white-haired loli-chan was pure delight! I loved the scene where she threw a rock at him and the one where he "kicked" her face. :3 And she was such a brave loli, running all the way!

Yes, very insightful, I know. ;)

You're right for the music; it was really beautiful!

For the book, I think I wouldn't want to know... The mystery is what makes it so interesting. I think we would be disappointed if we knew what book it was... I don't like when all the informations in a show are given; it somewhat kills the mystery, the atmosphere...

For the citation, what about:

"Words make love with one another." André Breton
or
"Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist." René Magritte
or
"Our Father which art in heaven - Stay there - And we will stay on earth - Which is sometimes so pretty” Jacques Prevert

They are suggestions, but if you want other nice citations, check the people from surrealism :P

A great little short. The animation was spectacular, and the mood was pefectly set. And another bonus point for being set in my own county! :P
Also, Kigeki is included in the anime anthology Sweat Punch. Kigeki was not my favourite from the collection of four short stories though... I liked Higan and End of the World more.

I don't think the name of the book would kill the atmosphere, but of course it might kill the film for the people who have disliked the book. But then again, shouldn't a really highly acclaimed good booke actually exist? One that makes you think "Yes, this one is really worth it". For anime or films, I actually think such titles exist.

Oho, so Desert-Spirit is from Ireland! Sweat Punch sounds interesting indeed - Higan and End of the World definitely are on my to-watch list. Perhaps one of them will be featured in the next weeks soon.

@xaemar: Haha, I have now decided for a quotation that I find nice.

the book was everything.. and to him it didn't matter which book was it he would simply read it...
it's 'book' and not The Book... and yet if there hadn't been the idea with the book, kigeki would be just another estetic vamp anime.

but then again.. it wouldn't have been kigeki in the first place...

but if we had to choose the book, I guess I would prefer one book over all the others that actually has the name ''Kigeki'' or ''Comedy'' and is written by Aristotélēs, this book has been lost - which is a huge step back for the humanity..

i'm not sure if any of you caught this while watching kigeki but in the last scene

(SPOILER)

the black swordsman whispers in the little girl's ear "if you tell anyone i'll kill you" ISN'T a reference to him devouring the bodies but is a reference to the type of books that he reads which are comedy.

(END SPOILER)

not sure if any of you caught that :D

You mean he doesn't want anybody to know that he reads comedic books? Hmmm, it sounds like a good idea, but wouldn't that make him somewhat silly? As if he was scared that nobody would respect him anymore because he reads comedies. XD

I never thought of it that way Ida. If I was a peasant living in the countryside knowing full well that there is a being capable of eating and/or disposing that many bodies I would still not make fun of him for his choice of reading material. But still, nice theory.

I wondered about that when I rewatched it. Because in the beginning we he is saying all his lines about devouring hementions beforehand something like "Last night, when I smiled." hmmm... I can definitely see it that way at least.

Anyways I thought this was probably one of the best ova's I have seen and I thought Ave Maria sounded so lovely and fitting in the background. I would have to give it a 10/10 of course ^^
