I thought it was time for a discussion thread for one of my fav anime shows, BGC Tokyo 2040.

This was the first anime i ever watched that wasn't DBZ or Pokemon. Back in 2001, my sister wanted to see this because she thought it would be some cutesy girl show. Instead i saw episode 18. The one when boomers were infecting the ADP. I think she got a bit of a scare.

Even though we watched episodes 18-26, i could barely remember anything from it. When i started watching anime seriously last year, i bought the box-set and finished it in days. Though it has its flaws, BGC2040 is such a stylish show with a great cast of characters and awesome music. What do you think of it? Discuss.

(Yoshi's 20th thread. Yay i guess.)

I expected it to suck compared to BGC 2032 but I was pleasantly surprised, even watching it dubbed, and I hate dubs (I got a bootleg copy of it originally that was just copies of the ADV releases but the subs didn't work, so I had to watch the dub; my first and last experience with bootlegs. Now I own the legit boxset). I was also impressed by how it reworks the idea; I can't actually think of a smoother instance of remaking off the top of my head. It takes the original premise, reuses Sonoda's original suit designs, then replaces them, with everything else new.

Compared to 2032, the difference with the overall story is immense; while I love 2032 (read my review! barefaced plug!), it really is a bit all over the place storywise, and 2040 does exactly what it should. I wasn't so hot on the ending and the whole final Galatea bit, but it works OK.

Love the redone characters, too, on the whole, especially the way Priss and Sylia look. Wish they'd kept the old pink-haired Nene and Linna's ever-present hairband though. Linna as OL is a good plan and introduces the Knight Sabers really well, and the way she begins as the main protagonist but the focus gradually shifts to Priss is great too.

I wish the overall look of it was better though; I don't really go for the new mechanical design, or the new suits from the second half, it's just not as good as 2032. Also, am I the only one whose first thought when they introduce the new suits was, shall we say, less than entirely honourable? They have to be naked to wear them...thick white liquid...and all the tentacle beasts, too...and that story about the licking boomer...I detect some distinctly, er, 'adult' influences on BGC 2040.

The music...I like it, especially Priss's vocal tracks (best track: Idea), it all lives permanently in my playlist, but it's just not as good as the songs from 2032. Nothing beats Konya Wa Harikein, Mad Machine or Victory. Interesting trivia: Priss's band is called Sekiria; I forget what this means exactly but it's some kind of embarrasing disease, haemorrhoids or diarrhoea or something like that. Sadly I also forget why this is their name.

Music-wise, I've got Konya Wa Harikein, Your in the Battlefield, Ya Know and Waiting For You. I love the music. Can't get enough of it.

I like the dub more than the sub. Hillary Haag did Nene so well.

Well I don't know if you guys will see this (months later), but I've always been a fan of my series, being a big cyberpunk fan and all. I'm currently about to finish up the original OVA series and I absolutely love it, but I'm not quite sure if this newer one can capture the magic the original has since it really has that "nostalgic" factor for me with the music, art, and everything (as YMH points out with the character designs).

Excellent review too by the way, YMH.

I actually saw some of 2040 like ~6 years ago or something but don't really remember it at all, though I've had the whole series downloaded forever but haven't touched it. Once I finish up 2032 I'm probably going to go through it and see what it's like, I do remember liking it back in the day, but I'm just not sure if it'll surpass 2032 for me. Alas, I am actually pretty easy going with anime and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, it'll be interesting to see differences too.

Seems like a pretty underated series among this community, with barely any posts and hardly any votes compared to other releases.

The ending felt rushed and completely left field considering the connection between the villains and certain characters and the role (or lack of) that they play in the conclusion. The abilities of the armor also got a bit wonky.

I love the original. The premise. Characters, etc but thought this remake was merely ok. I wait patiently for the sequel that was announced but I fear was cancelled.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for the sequel too. Though in the meantime I really need to watch the original OVA.

I started out not liking BC2040, but now I think it's a great cyberpunk anime. I haven't seen the original 80's ova, so I don't know how it compares. The English dub is not so bad or terrible, but not the best either. Watching it reminds me of the usual classic 90's animes and I think that "classic" feel goes a long way. I don't know why, but whenever I watch this I think "wow, this reminds me of Power Rangers!" and "Girl Power!" :P I like Priss too...she's pretty cool.

I really enjoyed the series. I felt that it almost has the same darker feel as the AD Police ova and the Parasite Dolls OVA side stories.

I'm 6 episodes in and I haven't watched any more for a while because I think it is pretty boring. The original BC is a lot more fun to watch I think...even if the story in it is a mess everything else is great. This one...I dunno if i can finish it XD

It feels kinda slow, I don't like the re-done nene and leon, the music isn't nearly as good, and the time limit on the suits is stupid (do they have a 5 minute battery life? seriously?).

Wow mecha suits that only last 5 mins, silly idea can't imagine a series will do well with that concept.... XD.

On a more serious note i remebered that the series was kinda slow at the start and it's kinda episodic in nature, can't recall much, i watched once a week when they aired it but a think it start's to pick up later on and also looses the episodic nature, the ending is worth it IMHO.

The first few episodes do set up the premise of the show, and I guess it could be seen as "slow" in that manner, but every show has to do this. Also, the episodes aren't very episodic at all, they often run into each other and they are all telling an over arching story. Third, the original Bubblegum Crisis is MUCH more episodic than this TV Series is, so I don't know where you two are coming from with this.
