| I figured that this might be a nice idea for people in this group. Basically you can link to posts or reviews that you've made and ask for feedback from others. If someone gives you some helpful suggestions or feedback you can do the same for another kind soul. I'm hoping that this is able to create a good environment where all the bloggers here just mutually help each other improve with their writing. Anyway, I'll start us off just to get things rolling. I've been wondering if my writing style is getting a bit too dry lately. Is this too long for a review? Am I taking too long to get my points across? | I enjoyed your review! It was structured well and was nicely written. It is definitely long, but then again, you're covering a lot of episodes, so maybe that's to be expected. I wouldn't necessarily categorize your writing as "dry," but the tone feels dry because of the review length, if you get what I mean? I think the biggest thing is to determine if this is your voice or not and just go with it. Your approach is to analyze and review in an essay-like manner, which is a strong choice and seems well-suited to your style. In this way, I think your review becomes a resource for people looking up information about the show. The other way is to go less heavy on information and heavier on humor, exaggeration, etc., which draws and audiences and entertains. One final thought - I haven't read your other reviews, but consider doing shorter ones. The advantage is that readers will more than likely stay with you to the end. In a funny way, you'll actually be able to tell MORE in less, because you may have readers read the entire post rather than ditch immediately because of length. However, it is hard to cut down writing. I actually did this for a living - turned sometimes extremely long narratives into 1 or 2 paragraph writings, so I understand (and I still have problems with lengthiness on my own blog). Anyway, these are words from a blogger who rarely does reviews, and when he does, writes them poorly. Your review is much better than any I've written. Good work! |

| Hey, thanks for the feedback TWWK! I understand what you mean about the length making the review seem dry rather than the content itself. Personally, I prefer writing my reviews in an essay-like manner since it suits my style better but I know for a fact that people prefer reviews with more of a personal flair. It's funny (no pun intended), that you mention adding more humour to a review. The first review that I wrote about Zero no Tsukaima happens to be the review that most people enjoy the most and have read. Maybe striking a balance between the two is the best way to go? I've also tried to cut down on length and get all my thoughts out in about 1000 words, but that does prove to be difficult, as you probably know. Anyway, thank you so much for the feedback. I really appreciate it and hope I can use this information to make my reviews better for people to read (so they can learn something and enjoy reading them). If anyone else has any other suggestions or feedback I'd appreciate it too. Also, feel free to post your own pieces of work or reviews in this thread if you want others to offer feedback (I'd be happy to help someone in order to keep the good karma). |
