This was a lot easier to watch than I was expecting. I was also more emotionally involved than I expected to be. Thought the first film was great but didn't really feel like I needed to put myself through that again. Pleasantly surprised however. And sad too of course. Were people really that unsympathetic to the homeless?

I expected a forced, lighter and softer sequel. It was very good, instead. lanblade said: I thought Gen licking the burn girl was really weird. Yeah, weird and heartwarming at the same time.

Kinda sad that they killed off the mother, even though the death flags were there I kinda wished she didn't have to die. Nonetheless it was a great, it would've been great if they did a time skip and everyone was doing great and the old man had died.

I can't say that I liked this more than the first one but it was an appropriate and fair sequel considering the context of when the story takes place. The new characters were pretty interesting but damn, the mom :(

I thought Gen licking the burn girl was really weird.
@lanblade This 2-part story is extremely tone-deaf at many times. The licking scene would have been a lot less weird if Gen had said something like "your scars are nothing, see" *licks the scars*, then the girl would be like "ah, you can't do that", and he replies "if you're still hung up on your scars, then let me promise: when we're old enough, I'm gonna marry you!". Basically, adding a clear romantic component would have made the licking less weird. But I gotta, the writing and voice-acting for Gen is the worst I've ever seen and heard in anime. I have no idea why the author chose to make Gen so devoid of empathy. He does react sad at times, but in a very clicheed way. Meanwhile, he's SO quick to forget about the sad events. Took him like 10 seconds to get over his dad, older sister and younger brother burning to death :/ This anime is best when it's NOT focused on Gen. I still think it's worth watching, but 90% of the reason to watch this anime is the scene of the nuke going off. The rest isn't that impressive and the tone-deaf writing and voice-acting for Gen causes major whiplash several times.
If you haven't watched "Fantastic Children", don't talk about "best anime". Thank you.
