As the title stated, I'm interested in this anime but there are just too many seasons that I don't think I could spare the time or be patience enough to watch all of them.

So my question is, how much do I lose if I don't watch the prequels? Are they vital to explaining the story? are all the seasons directly linked or independent plots? would a synopsis help?

Well there's a few things I believe you should know from the past seasons. Read what I write here and you're pretty much set to go.

The story is centered around a cherry blossom tree that grants people's wishes. This tree is embed with magical power and is blossoming all year long.
In the first season's we were introduced to Sakura, the main characters's cousin. Sakura inherited magical power from her grandmother and managed to maintain a young appearance because of it. Sakura is a genius and was the one that felt the most detached from the events but that's likely because she was one of the most mature in the cast.
The Tree caused many problem because it'd grant any wish, both the goods and evils ones but in the end the events managed to turn out well.

In Da Capo II, Sakura become the principal of the academy the characters attended in the first serie despite looking like a grade schooler.
Da Capo II is set 57 years latter than Da Capo I so the cast is pretty much 'the new generation' except for Sakura who remain the same.
The tree yet again caused trouble in that serie which lead to some drama.
The only difference with the first serie is that Sakura had enough of seeing everything around her getting messed up by that tree's whim and decided to use her magical power to merge with the tree as to control it.
She failed.
In the end all she could do was to make herself disappear alongside that tree which never bloomed again afterward.

In the final scene we see that Sakura didn't truly disappear but is roaming the land with her memories gone.

I'm not too sure when Da Capo III take place but it's a few decade later at the very least and it feature a whole new generation of people just like Da Capo II did.

There's some detail you might not get, some reference to the past season but in general with what I've written there you will very likely get what is happening.

Having watched the anime series, but not played the games, I haven't noticed anything that you would need to catch up on in this series that Scheherazade1007 didn't already cover.

From what I saw, this show takes place 20 years after the events of Da Capo II, as one of the girls mentions her parents recalling the tree still being in eternal bloom.

Oh yeah, and there's a guy named Suginami in every one of these, much like there's a "Cid" in every Final Fantasy game. He's voiced by the same guy each time, and looks approximately the same. He hasn't had much of a role in the third season yet though, but he was always more of a side character if I recall.

As someone who has seen ever-single-season of Da-Capo (wich is a greater task than it sounds) i can tell you, there's no need to see the other seasons to undesrtand this one.
Each season is a self centered story with few to none relation with the others.
Sure there are some (few) references to the other seasons
Yeah, there´s a "Suginami" in each season
And is certainly not the first time we see Utamaru... or Sakura for that matter. But you don´t miss a thing for not seeing the other seasons

As long as you know who Sakura is you can pretty much watch this third serie without watching those before but knowing Sakura, a bit of the settings as well as the event that happened at the end of Da Capo II s2 is pretty much a must imo.

I would recommend watching the previous seasons ... and then rather NOT watch this one.

DC 1 & 2 were really great but DC III is mostly plain harem.
But there is a slight chance you can enjoy it, if you watch the earlier seasons, because there are a few connections in their storyline and you won't really understand DC II completly without watching the previous ones.

DC III was awful, DC II was slightly less awful and DC I was slightly less awful than DC II.
In short: Every season was awful but it only get worst. I wouldn't recommend the series at all, I only watched DC III because I do not like to drop a series I've started.

If you(anyone) watched prequels you would go all nostalgic whenever there's anything (and there are those things) pointing to past events or characters from prequels like who was Sakura, Utamaru, what is magical Sakura three, what happened 20yrs ago /70yrs ago, Who are those girls showed in 1st episode by Sakura three, etc.....

Even though series is watchable as standalone of course overall enjoyment will not be supported by nostalgic feelings and knowing things here and there.
( Currently interested in OP MC genre. Recommendations are welcomed, preferable those yet not on my list )
