Looking at the Parent Story "Psychic Squad" it seems like a fun anime just not my cup of tea. However reading the Unlimited synopsis it seems, for lack of a better comparison, kinda Darker than Blacky. Is this a same universe different story type thing or a different angle? Should I be familiar with the parent story? I guess I am asking for someone to tell me the how the stories overlap and the general tone of each series.

The tones for the "Psychic Squad" anime and "The Unlimited" anime are pretty different. Psychic Squad gears more towards the comedy aspect while Unlimited is quite a bit darker with a more serious tone.

While the original show focused on the first half of the manga, talking about BABEL and the "Children", a trio of super-powered esper girls (Kaoru, Aoi, and Shiho) and their trainer Minamoto, "Unlimited" borders between a spin-off and an AU show that focuses instead on the original show's main antagonists, PANDRA and their leader Kyousuke Hyoubu.

Both shows take place in the same world and involve some of the same themes and characters. It's mainly their tones and POV that has changed between shows. I would try out "Unlimited" even if "Psychic Squad" isn't your cup of tea. It's a stand-alone series so you can definitely watch it without having ever having seen the original. I and many others have done so, and now its my favorite show of the season.

The second half of "Psychic Squad" is a lot more serious than the first half, you should watch it IMO, even though most of the episode gear toward the comedy.
