What went well with our contest? What did not? Suggestions for improvements? This thread is where you tell us what you thought of our way of handling and managing the contest =)

At first I thought I wouldn't have my fanfic ready on time for the contest but in the end I finished pretty early. XD Though it did take a while to get things started, it was nice to wait for the people who still needed more time, after all the more of us participating, the more fun it is right? Other than the wait, which is understandable, everything else went smoothly in my opinion.

My only suggestion is that it would have been nice to know which of the final 3 series ultimately won earlier. Instead of giving time to watch them all, then giving time to write, those two periods of time could have been merged. The winning series could be announced then people would have time to watch and write, since it's just one series, people could finish watching it faster, write their fanfics and be ready to post them sooner.

Yeah. Another thing could be to pre-select the series on our own, and then get interested people to write.

Yeah, that can work too.

I'll be honest: I disagree with the rule for judging "Don't detract points because someone aren't fluent in English."?

Even though this is MAL, where not everyone speaks English as a native language, one of the most important things to a well-written fanfiction is that it contains as few grammatical errors as possible. Unfair as it may seem, a poorly written (grammatically speaking) fanfiction will detract from the reader's enjoyment, and should thus be penalized by the judges. There are plenty of resources out there for people who are looking to clean up their writing. That being said, apart from a few mistakes here and there, the fanfics in this contest were well written. Just a thought for future contests.

I agree with your viewpoint. I can sympathize with people whose first language is not English, or who are not very fluent with English, but there are way too many different (and effective) resources out there to compensate for that (the most prominent and effective example, in my opinion, being the use of beta readers who can speak the language fluently). Not being able to speak or write the language fluently is not an excuse to do a poor job grammatically. All it means is that the writer has to put more effort, and perhaps search for a little extra help, to ensure that what they produce is quality product, at the very least from a presentation standpoint. Writing a good story that keeps the reader engaged requires not only a good plot and characters, but also effective grammar that doesn't require the reader to sit and decipher what the writer is trying to say. Not everyone has the talent for the former, but at least try to get the latter right.

Well, you're free to do so, and I definitely see you guys' viewpoint. Not everyone would think of things like that though, but it's true that there are resources to help. But they were more like guidelines anyway, so how you judges vote is, when all comes to all, for you to decide.

*Will definitely keep in mind for future contests.
