THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Well this was actually pretty interesting, the difference between the 2000 prequel is very low but I like it, this episode was quite interesting! So lets see what happens next.

Now that the tv anime is over, I'm gonna watch the original OVA to see how it compares, and to keep the JoJo sized hole in my heart filled until a part 4 anime is announced.

As with the 2000 OVA, I like this version a lot, the animation is really good for it's time, and the characters all act like their manga counterparts (although Jotaro has a bit too much emotion) and to my relief it keeps the comedy elements that the 2000 OVA decided to leave out. The only major downgrade compared to the tv anime is in the sound department, the music and sound effects aren't nearly as good, and the voice acting isn't on par the the perfect cast of the tv version. It's not bad or anything, it's just that the tv version is too perfect for me to accept anything less.

Iggy somehow seems even more of an asshole in this version, and I love it.

Well one thing that is for sure is that this definitely gives you your gore fix. I just hope that there is decent story to go with the gore.

Rip the sacraficed girl at the beginning. Rip the two pilots. Water is scary :0

The ending (almost 4 min) is basically no preview/or extra and just credits

I originally watched this series back around 1998 or 99. It's aged well!

Bennett just uploaded a review of this series. I guess I should watch it first to see what all of the hype is about.

That water animation was beautiful, I just couldn't get past how "fluid" that water moved. Aquatic animation aside, this one instantly has more charm than the one from 2000. Closer to that JoJo feel and superior for it.

This is the first anime version of Jojo that I watch, so I can't compare it to much, but I really enjoyed this first episode. It doesn't really work as a standalone work as we are thrown right into the story but I don't think that was the intent anyway. And this way, the bizarre weirdness the series is famous for can start straightaway and it feels fast-paced and exciting.

I'm opting to watch these in order of release, so it's not exactly comforting reading about how the 2000's prequel fares in comparison, but this on it's own was alright. It doesn't compare to the tv series of course but it's still fine on it's own right. I liked some of the scene direction here quite a bit, particular the bit where Polnareff tries to slice The Fool straight down the middle, then the reaction shot being "sliced" in the middle with the black void eventually being filled in with the surprised Polnareff since he's the one he did the slicing, it was a cool moment.

In regards to character designs and general overall animation design, this might be the furthest from an anime I’ve ever watched, almost resembling classic American animation. Heck, there’s an astounding lack of Japanese tropes present as well, not to mention none of this anime’s OVA’s actually takes place in Japan. This is quite a different experience, and I must say it feels strange logging my process in MyANIMEList after each episode, hehe. Almost tempted to dub this a cartoon.

But… dang. The two pilots of the helicopter. Reminds me of what happened to the pilots of the plane the gang flew in the second OVA. I guess pilots and the Joestar family aren’t compatible.

After all that, watching Jotaro smirk and say “This is getting really interesting,” is really reassuring. Jotaro is a man of limited speech but he always comes off as quite likable. As is Polnarref. Reaching for the comb, lmfao.

Overall, very good episode. 30 minutes too! These early JoJo episodes aren’t supposed to be as outlandish, nonsensical, or comedic, but it’s all so very charming all the same. The five men in the group are all interesting to watch, despite Jotaro and Kakyoin being fairly limited characters up to Episode 7, with Polnareff giving a majority of the dialogue and Joseph and Avdol being the wiseman of the group.

I have found the OVA's from 1993/94 and 2000 only in decent quality.

Of course the two videos on YouTube uploaded by "TheToaMaster" are a good choice but...

Do you know where I could find them in better quality? At least DvD quality. Thank you.

I thought that the 2000 anime was too self-serious. While understandably cutting content, there were constant cuts for the comedic or fun moments which I love. Well not my preference, I still appreciate it nonetheless for being different. Immediately upon starting the 1993 series, I lost that feeling. Although there were small cuts, this was the source material and more. The characters felt expressive like they should, even more so than the manga at times, where they could feel stiff before. And we had that great mix of heartfelt, intense, and hilarious which makes this adventure what it is.

In many ways it actually added to the experience. In small ways, like Star Platinum being far more explicitly used instead of using binoculars, or by catching Polnareff or Kakyoin. And there was an entire scene added, extending the car chase with the glove reminding me of Angelo from Diamond is Unbreakable. That encounter allowed for the incredibly breathtaking moment where Star Platinum punched through the water and inches by Polnareff's head. Which then followed to give Avdol a moment where he could get the water bubble away from the drowning Polnareff. Avdol continuing to be more notable than he ever has been!!

I won't be continuously writing posts for this, but I wanted to write my impression of the first episode and how it feels far more in spirit with the original manga than the 2000 series did. The 2000 series which gave it a unique tone, feeling like an alternate universe Jojo.

Also, I didn't remember to mention the Phantom Blood animation in 2000 so I will now. Stardust Crusaders is a favorite of mine, but potentially even higher on my favorites is Phantom Blood so seeing old school animation for the original is awesome. The Aztec mask sacrifice is why I bring this up now.

Today is November 19 in Japan. Happy 30th anniversary to the original JoJo anime. You know how amazing this part of this story has to be for them to skip the beginning and jump straight to this. For years, I've only seen the beginning scene and the content in this OVA's later episodes so many times without watching it in full. It was time to correct that and what better time than the 30th anniversary. What a start. Everything was just amazing 90's content. From the blood, decapitation, skeleton, meat & bone, middle fingers, everything.

Reading the comments, a certain someone is just flat out ignorant. If you're coming to watch this after watching the newer version and intentionally comparing this to that rather than that to this and on top of that, these are 2 works from different eras meaning the choices/direction/tone made for this are perfect for its era and the newer one is (almost) perfect for its era... you're Za Furu. Also, recency bias will cloud your mind because ain't no way you're knowledgeable on the matter and intentionally disrespecting these legends.
If you see that my post is exactly 1 month old (or more) from when it was posted... Don't waste your time, especially when you want to reply with something petty & insignificant. Assume that I've moved on (because I have).

It's a real slow burner which is expected from an anime made in the early 90's. Not really sure if that works to its advantage but what does is the art style and aesthetics. It looks really good for JoJo's Bizzare Adventure.
