Since Teen Titans went into production four years ago in 2003, we've seen a period of increased American interest in Anime and Anime-style works, to the point where some American studios and companies make their own works based off Japanese-style art and plotlines. Admittedly, I myself have only seen a few examples of these, mainly those aired on CN at the time.

This time around, I really don't have that much of a strong opinion. I've seen every ep of Avatar, Megas XLR, and Teen Titans at least once, and they were fun to watch even for a dub-hater like me. The main reason why; they don't have inherent handicaps. It's a largely new genre, and I think it's done pretty well for itself; the TT art was a cute (with plenty of humor and seriousness in appropriate doses), Megas was bloody hilarious (still my personal favorite giant robot parody), and Avatar is developing a decent cast of characters. Then again, I haven't seen the Puff show, and I don't know how it was (I assume bad). These Am-ime titles, in fact, do a better job of not abusing cliches and plot devices than some authentic anime.

But the Am-anga, I hate. Aoi House - epic fail. Dramacon - overpromoted by Tokyopop. Last Hope - decent first volume, but sprinted downhill immediately after. Blade for Barter - like One Piece without the excuse for a crappy english version. These are, collectively, the most uninspired pieces of rat dung I've seen in a long time. Megas, despite everything, was not a mockery of the Anime conventions it used. The manga - it seems to me like the persons writing these had good intentions, but little inspiration. What they do, most of the time, is simply use manga conventions and art that have been used to cover up for a lack of general depth. I don't really have as much of a logical reason, it just makes me mad, comparing these to other manga I've read.

I have no problem with anime or manga-styled American works as long as they don't advertise themselves as anime or manga. Mostly because those are Japanese words used to refer to Japanese products, imo.

Can't say I've seen any so called "am-ime" so I can't really comment. And I'm not really interested either, it all seems to be aimed at kids (tho I've heard people of all ages rave about Avatar). The only real "Am-anga" I've read is Megatokyo (does it even count) which I liked initially (in 9th grade) but quickly grew to dislike. Slow to update, poor art quality considering how much time he has, too much emphasis on merchandising, and overall it just grew stale.

And really I get a bit irked when I see am-ime or am-anga brought up in an anime or manga setting. It's like, hey these are two different things, I'm not here to talk about that stuff... >_<

From what ive seen of american anime (and also canadian anime) id say that some times their really good, Avatar and teen titans are both fairly funny and actiony (Avatar is more dramatic if comepared to Teen Titans

And what url_elf said, i dont like it when the American animes call themselfs "Anime or manga"
It feels like a cheap rip off then :P

I think that segregating anime and manga by it's locale seems a bit foolish. A lot of the stuff we have was originally Chinese or Korean anyway (especially in the manga world), and produced in Japan despite that. So why not American creations as well? I don't think that media should have borders. How can we say that we'll take one foreign material of quality but not another? I think that if a form of media can have a fan-base somewhere, then it can have a creator there, as well.
