An interview of "Shingeki no Kyojin" mangaka Hajime Isayama was revealed on December 4, 2013. In the interview, he mentions that he is thinking about changing the ending he already had a rough idea about. Influencing his decision is the popularity the series has gained from its anime and upcoming live-action movie adaptations. He states that he now has a new idea for the ending, but feels conflicted. Though he does not wish to abandon his original idea, he is concerned about the effect the ending will have.

I'm just hoping that this new idea for the ending doesn't end up becoming disappointing.

The Type B Otaku these days are soft, they don't want a kill em all ending in which they'll see their much loved characters dying a gruesome death.

Who knows? Maybe he's changing it to make everyone end up dying an anti-climactic death?

Business-wise, this is a good decision to make.

I mean, we all remember what happened when Bioware pissed off their fanbase with Mass Effect 3.

Yea the ending was going to be a sad one. Just like FMA, even while having a beautiful and original ending, the people will still hate it because it isn't a "Happily ever after".

I REALLY hope he sticks with his original idea and not reform it just because of how popular it got. Whether it be a happy or sad ending that is, I'll probably still love it.

But no that theory has actually been going around for a while.

OT: I just hope he doesn't screw up the story. Realizing you want to change something is natural, I'm all for it as long as I don't feel that it messes anything up.

I think Isayama should've just kept this thought to himself since we won't really get to know whether this is good or bad. Unless he decides to tell us the alternate ending he had in mind when the manga ends. Which ever ending he chooses, I just hope I won't be disappointed ^^

He said in the interview one where everyone dies is what he was planning. Something about it being similar to "The Mist" whatever that movie did, he spoiled it for me annyways.

This makes me mad and sad at the same time. I don't want a soft ending just because he thinks it's best for the fanbase. Give me an ending that you think is the best for the story and forget the softies dammit.

I think the author should stick with the original ending and not change it just to suit his fans. If he does he will simply disappoint himself or other fans that don't agree with his ideas. Besides any ending done for the sake of the masses will probably end up as crap. Better to write an ending that the author can fully support and agree with.

I heard the original ending was just all the characters dying, what the hell is the point of even investing time into SnK if nothing is accomplished in the end?

Well that's what I heard in the original thread, you can read the interview on the first page. Google translate sucks but I saw something about that movie and people dying in it too. He's a new mangaka, maybe he kinda got carried away.

I'm fine with all the characters dying, as long as they manage to kill all the Titans. If it is just an ending like "Titans stomped the shit out everyone, humanity remained oppressed, The End" then it is totally useless.

Ah, i see. Isayama decided to change the ending due to its popularity. What i'm really curious is, Is he going to be like Oda who wracked the initial ending he created himself to milk his manga for all its worth? I hope not though

I hope he wasn't forced to elongate the series. Sure, its one of the most popular manga now, but I don't want to see such a good series come to waste. I personally and I'm sure others will agree with me in this, think that this work has the potential to be a masterpiece. However, a good ending seperates a masterpiece from a generic piece of trash.

As if most people care if a movie about almost naked men fighting orcs was historically accurate. You also have all these not-bad people who've been screwed over by movies:

What a retard. This guy's a fucking moron. I also heard he said all this anti-Korea shit that pissed off all his Korean fans, leading them to stop reading his merely "okay" manga.

Seriously though... worried he'll lose his fans because of the ending. As seen with Neon Genesis Evangelion, it really doesn't matter. If somebody's dumb enough to actually like this guy, they'll continue liking SnK regardless if its ending is 3edgy5everybody. Probably trying to make some shitty alternate universe ending where everybody survives and lives happily ever after.

I don't like the sound of this. I haven't started the manga yet, but I was planning on reading it once it was finished so I didn't have to wait. I remember reading how it was about halfway over, and he planned to wrap it up at around volume 20 and he had the ending in mind. Now that he is changing the ending (to pander to fans, no less), this could make the manga go on for longer than originally planned. I don't want a 60 volume SnK series that ends cliche with everything happy and smiles. But that might be too pessimistic.
