THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Finally got to this episode. Finally one of the ultra-serious and somber ones again, very rare in this series. Though when they do come around, they're the ultimate juxtaposition and antithesis of the usual carnivalesque light-heartedness of the rest of the show, and it makes them all the more beautiful. From what I've seen in the re-cap OVAs, there's a few of these types scattered about.

This episode focuses on Ataru's birthday and what appears to be his distancing relationship from Lum.

Anyway, this episode is a good example of why I love the UY cast, you can almost put them in any situation, from the bizarre to the dramatic and it still works. Definitely one of the high points of the show thus far for me.

I thought it was interesting, definitely more on the serious side . They've dabbled with the subject of Ataru's need for Lum, but this is one of the more serious depictions of it so far.

I wouldn't say that it shows his "distancing relationship with Lum" though. I'd be inclined to say it's just the opposite. While in many ways on the surface he wants to be rid of Lum, deep down he's come to realize just how accustomed he is to her presence and how much he has taken her for granted.

This episode wasn't bad, but I didn't think it was wonderful either. The ending didn't come together as well as I had hoped, although it is very nice whenever Ataru lets down his macho exterior to show Lum how he truly feels on occasion. When it comes to the more serious episodes of Urusei Yatsura up until this episode, I'd still point to episode 44, "Kimi Sarishi Nochi" as the best so far.

I loved this episode. It was more on the dramatic side and proved the multifaceted series Urusei yatsura is.

i agree that episode 44 was better, as well as the one where ataru and lum went on a date due to lum feeling that her relationship with ataru isn't healthy or something. I'll admit that this was pretty good, i still think that ataru and lum should have done something more. Plus i also preferred the valentines day episode where in the end lum kisses ataru. Now that was a good episode.

Missed the bulk of episodes leading to this one, so maybe my thoughts are out of context. But Ataru is such a raging dick in this episode. Bitter over a birthday for days on end? That situation would've been alright if played for laughs, but it's made disgusting by the story's serious spin.

My highlights for this episode were the scenes with Lum wandering the city (9:40 to 10:40 for LRE subs) which worked to establish a depressing, isolated vibe. Otherwise, the counselor was the only sane character alive. The ending left me sick.

I really enjoy UY episodes with expressive animation like this one. I also love it how they returned to the Cosmic Cycler ED in the previous episode. I don't think I've seen this happen in any other anime.

There's been a handful of serious, romantic stories before but I think this is the first one that actually works very well, maybe since it skips Ataru's philandering entirely. They actually feel like lovers in this episode. It's great.

It's interesting that for once Lum did something which annoyed Ataru rather than the other way around. More than forgetting his birthday her initial attempts to get past it are a little flippant; her apologies are kinda crap. I think she genuinely feels sorry she forgot (see her expression when Ataru reminds her) but she did a poor job of communicating here.

Around 11 minutes in Lum asks Ataru if missed her while she was out in town and he claims not to care. Her facial expression shifts from friendly to shocked to sad to angry. Pretty impressive emotional complexity.

Ataru kills some time at a children's playground before deciding to skip school. A futile attempt to retreat into a simpler past?

I especially like how the story drifts into its conclusion rather then it being driven by any particular event. The pettiness of their fight is simply submerged by the attraction between them.

Another thing I like is how the other characters are neutralized; Shinobu does nothing, Sakura's advice does not help, the Stormtroopers' ridiculous plan flops, and Mendou insightfully and honorably chooses not to intervene. This story is about Ataru and Lum.

Lum doesn't wear her tiger bikini once in this episode; I like to imagine she's wearing Earth clothes more often after living there for so long (and she does wear them fairly often in other episodes around here), but the real reason is probably just that drama is harder when she's wearing such silly clothes.

Some minor points of interest:
During the scene where Lum forgets his birthday, Ataru is reading a book called "Only You" with a picture of a red-haired woman on the cover. This is a reference to the first Urusei Yatsura film, which came out about this time, and its central new character, Elle.

The movie Lum watches while wandering around town, "Laughing Target", is a reference to a short work of that name by Rumiko Takahashi, author of the original Urusei Yatusra manga. It would be adapted as an OVA in 1987 by Studio Pierrot, which also worked on this TV series.

Forgetting your lover's birthday is pretty bad and she did try to dodge out of it a little, but regardless I don't think his behavior is supposed to come off as rational; when he speaks to Sakura she has little patience for the way he's acting. The whole episode is emotionally driven; Ataru (over)reacts because he is hurt by Lum forgetting his birthday and this episode examines the fallout. He's never been a subtle, tolerant, or likable person. If fact being an ass is central to his character.

It's not about who's right or wrong, which is why it begins with Lum doing something wrong for once. It's just about the distance briefly opened between these lovers and how they deal with it until it passes.

It's good to see this show not being comedic all the time. It shows another side of the characters were not used to seeing. This episode was a good example showing Ataru and Lum's relationship is not just chaotic ( in a funny way), but that small things like forgetting their significant other's birthday can cause tension between the two. The ending was good, would have been better if she had the present in her hand and Ataru notices and starts to cry a little IMO :)

What a great episode to come back to after putting this on hold for a while.

Lum and Ataru's lover's quarrel made them seem like an old married couple, them being too stubborn to apologize and talk it out made it seem even more so,luckily everything worked out in the end.

Those two sure can't be honest about their feelings when they need to. I loved this episode for showing that they truly care for each other.

ATARU sure does want LUM to follow him, even when he's fooling around with other girls/women.

ATARU : I don't want a present, if it doesn't come from the heart!
TEN : Oh yeah, Mr. Tough Guy? Then tell me when LUM's birthday is?!
ATARU (replies) : I'm an Earthling, and thus i don't know how your calender goes.

Finally, a lost child found his mom & he can't help but cry. :)

Today is Ataru's birthday!

Edit- Rewatching this on Ataru's birthday again in 2022. This episode still holds up. Genuinely one of the best in the series (top 10 material) which is saying a lot considering it has nearly 200 episodes. Hoping the remake will readapt this.

Such a great episode. Those two are on their way on maturing up to become a better couple. It's always great to show much more serious romance progression. Their falling out which create the tension between the two felt real that I start tearing up when one of them start tearing up too.

I mean Ataru could've be straight to the point, but I can see why he would be too hurt and pride to do so. Noteworthy is that he wasn't the catalyst for the drama this time.

Great episode

Two banger episodes in a row, Ataru may have been a butt for most of this episode but seeing him sad on his birthday and then getting that super heartwarming ending really made this one to remember.

I love the absolute goofiness of this show but it’s often the ones where Ataru and Lum have these amazing moments together that are the best.

A rather serious episode than usual. Personally, I think episode 44 (after you've gone) did it better with better pacing and setup but that last scene is amazing even making me nearly tear up.

Ataru is such an idiot
usually when he hurts Lum I end up cursing him but I also can't stop laughing when he becomes so emotional when Lum isn't around and I end up becoming forgiving for his trash behaviour and want both of them to make up with each other
we all know how much Ataru loves Lum now and vice versa and their relationship has changed a lot now it seems impossible to imagine them seperating from each other
when Mendou smiled on hearing about Lum's whereabouts it was clear he have accepted both of them and although they behave like womanizer's it is not as intense as before
and Ataru acting perverted with Sakura felt kinda forced like he was trying to keep up his usual behaviour
and I wonder why Lum was so depressed I guess she felt tired of Ataru's behaviour for once

Who knew whether Lum knew his birthday mattered so much to Ataru, but his stubborn ass got mad and couldn't say how he felt to Lum directly. It's still cute how much he really does like her loyalty, even though he doesn't repay the favor..

Lum and Ataru are very bad at expressing their feelings to one another it hurts to see T_T
I liked the use of colour in this episode and the quiet melancholic feel too
