The first 110 or so chapters start off strong, then it immediately takes a nosedive by the time you reach volume 13. The first 37 chapters is arguably the strongest section of this entire series. It sets up this incredible world-building, it implements high-stakes, it introduces unknown threats, and it fleshes out the three most important characters of the story. As the chapters goes on, those three become shadowed in the background as the writer opts for a more plot-driven narrative. Eventually, the plot shifts from a “survival-escape” objective to a “cycle-of-hatred” dilemma. The world expands a little too much and introduces too many new ... characters that it completely forgot about the strengths of the main leads. Eventually, two of our main leads lose their original agency so much that they’re no longer who they originally were during those first 37 chapters. Emma goes from this big-sister that desires freedom for her family at Grace Field, to a Mary Sue that wants to achieve the impossible and save everyone. Too many new characters are introduced that the three main leads are constantly placed in the backdrop. Then the story starts reiterating this cycle-of-violence idea. From a group of small orphans who just want to be free, the plot shifts to otherworldly beings, multiple dimensions, civil wars, and corrupt political systems. Despite all its flaws, however, The Promised Neverland is still a good read. The reason why I’m recommending this series is because – despite the major plot-shifts, the character changes, and that weird K-drama ending - all 180 chapters still remained consistently engaging and interesting their own way. I think the people who are giving this series bad reviews don’t realize that they stuck through all 180 chapters but would rather focus on the negative aspects. Personally, I still enjoyed all twenty volumes of this series. I highly recommend you to give the first 37-100 chapters a try and see if you want to continue the rest.

A great start but it declined over time...

When I started reading this work it was still being released and I had the idea that I was reading the new "Death Note" of today but in reality it wasn't quite like that. The beginning of this work is in fact very good, it has an impactful first act and shows well what the initial purpose of the work is, in fact it is something quite shocking to see and it buys readers well (I was bought like that too lol). This work was one of the first works I started collecting physically and I sincerely regret ... that decision, the work declined over time in terms of plot. My disappointments with this work are the same as most people's, the post-orphanage act, most people stopped liking this work precisely because of this arc in which in my opinion it is not very well developed, the plot seems to want to exaggerate its own universe too much making it boring. The fact is that the plot had a change of objective from the middle to the end and many people did not buy this idea easily, I was one of them, I did not like the change of focus in the plot, this change was a shot in the dark, in the same way that happened with the Fast and Furious film series where they changed the genre of the film, here it seems to happen the same but even so I consumed the work until the end. For me The Promised Neverland is a work that has a beginning that borders on perfection, in fact it was a work that left a big mark on readers at the time of its release but the author was not able to finish the work in its greatness, he extended the serialization too much and expanded a universe too much that he was not able to sustain the same quality as the beginning, with all this I still say that even if the ending was weak compared to the beginning, it was still a decent ending, in my opinion it was a well-written ending but obviously far from what I expected. Finally, I conclude my review with a score of 8, but this score refers more to the first part of the story than the second, even though the second is not horrible, in fact it is weaker than the first.

Um otimo começo mas decaiu com o tempo...

Quando comecei a ler essa obra ela ainda estava em lançamento e eu tive a ideia de que estava lendo o novo "Death Note" da atualidade mas na realidade não foi bem assim. O começo dessa obra de fato é muito bom, tem um primeiro ato impactante e mostra bem qual é o intuito inicial da obra, de fato é algo bem chocante de se ver e compra bem os leitores (fui comprado assim tambem kkk). Essa obra foi uma das primeiras obras que comecei a colecionar fisicamente e sinceramente me arrependo dessa decisão, a obra foi decaindo com o tempo em questão de enredo. Meus desapontamentos com essa obra são os mesmos que a maioria das pessoas, o ato pós orfanato, a maioria das pessoas deixou de gostar dessa obra justamente por esse arco no qual ao meu ver não muito bem desenvolvido, o enredo parece querer engradecer demais seu próprio universo tornando-o chato. O fato é que a trama teve uma mudança de objetivo do meio pro final e muita gente não comprou essa ideia tranquilamente, eu fui uma delas, não gostei da mudança de foco no enredo, essa mudança foi um tiro no escuro, da mesma forma que aconteceu com a serie de filme Velozes e Furiosos onde mudaram o gênero do filme, aqui parece acontecer o mesmo mas mesmo assim consumi a obra até o final. Para mim The Promised Neverland é uma obra que tem um começo que beira a perfeição, de fato foi uma obra que marcou muito os leitores em sua epoca de lançamento porem o autor não conseguiu terminar a obra em sua grandeza, alongou demais a serialização e aumentou muito um universo que ele não foi capaz de sustentar a mesma qualidade do inicio, com tudo isso ainda digo que mesmo que o final tenha sido fraco se compararmos com o inicio, ele ainda foi um final decente, ao meu ver foi um fim bem escrito mas obviamente longe do que eu esperava. Enfim, concluo minha review com uma nota 8 porem essa nota se refere mais a primeira parte da historia do que a segunda, mesmo que a segunda não seja horrível, de fato ela é mais fraca que a primeira.

This manga is unfortunately one of the worst things a manga can be: a total waste of time.

The Promised Neverland generated quite a bit of hype when it was initially released because of its interesting premise. I will be the first to admit I was drawn in by this premise and the first arc was incredibly enjoyable. The characters are likable, the pacing is perfect, and the cat-and-mouse game that the characters have to play is so full of suspense I couldn't stop reading (it reminded me quite a bit of Death Note). "I can't wait to see what kind of trials and tribulations these ... characters have to face next!" said I, after finishing the first arc. Little did I realize that the characters would not have to face any trials and tribulations. In fact pretty much NOTHING happens for the last 15 volumes or so.

This is obviously an exaggeration, but the drop-off in quality after the first arc is significant. The psychological thriller aspect that made the first arc so good is essentially absent from the rest of the story. Characters don't go through any real character development. Sure they are likable at first glance, but as the story goes you eventually realize that it just boils down to Emma being plucky and optimistic, Ray being smart, and Norman being inconsistent. None of the characters actually have to face negative consequences or question their values, which is wild considering they live in such a brutal world.

I strongly believe the author just didn't have any ideas after the first arc. If you are truly curious about The Promised Neverland, give the first arc a read, you will probably like it quite a bit. But if you choose to read beyond that and you find yourself getting bored, just remember that it does not get better and the ending is honestly not that interesting. Just save yourself some time and read something else.
