Synopsis

Hoshi-sensei, a Japanese language teacher at an all-girls school, is at the mercy of his students and colleagues. Students challenge him to their shiritori word games illustrated in their daily notes, convince him to bring a dog into the classroom, and seek his advice on becoming a manga artist, while colleagues drag him along on their rounds to the pub. Matter-of-fact interactions between a cast of unique characters make for an offbeat comedy.

Background

Onna no Sono no Hoshi ranked first and fifth in the 2021 and 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Female Readers division, respectively. The series was nominated for the Manga Taisho Award for three consecutive years from 2021 to 2023. In 2022, the manga won the Social Impact Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival. It was nominated for the 47th and 49th Kodansha Manga Awards in the General category in 2023 and 2025, respectively.

This manga is absolutely brilliant.

The story is really basic, like almost every slice-of-life, but the way it is written makes it incredibly enjoyable. You follow Hoshi, a teacher in an all girls highschool, and how he handles the situations that arise in his workplace. Everything is very realistic (in a good way), so you can see the daily struggles of teachers and how students behave from their perspective, which I find to be really amusing being a student myself.

The art is pretty good and the characters are likeable as well, the feel real and the designs are really well made (at least in my opinion).

This is my go to Manga whenever I’m feeling depressed, it’ll always make me laugh!

The story revolves around teacher Hoshi and his class of highschool girls.
A simple, basic setting but it works soooooo good.

Wayama Yamas humor feels fresh, unique and engaging.
She perfectly captures the unhinged madness of highschoolers while still staying realistic and simple.

Hoshis random encounters with his students and the utter chaos that is the teachers room are pure entertainment 10/10
