Sazae-san is a long running and widely popular japanese manga and anime series that serves as a time capsule showcasing the daily life and values of postwar japan through its eponymous heroine sazae-san, a housewife and mother, and a woman deemed unladylike by those around her. The comic touches on themes of family and empowerment of women in lighthearted ways. "Sazae-san starts off as a strong woman and, as the show progresses, comes out as an open feminist, challenging heteronormative gender roles and other important matters of the time, all with lighthearted comedy and a daily SoL lens.
I remember going through a rough patch
...
during my bachelor's degree where I had to drop out of university due to my inability of keeping up with this slave-driving brand of 'if you don't work/study you're a bum' pedagogy and drowning deeper into my self-destructive animanga consumption, all of which felt 'emasculating' to me and killed all my initiative. Sazae-san was a ray of hope for me during those times, challenging common heteronormative values through personal struggle and self-actualization. It was worth scouring through the internet for its chapters and episodes.
Overall, I would recommend Sazae-san to viewers who want a panoramic dive into the Showa era and its transformative values, showcased year by year through its 6,000+ chapters. A score of 10 for being an encyclopedia of Showa Japan as much as a brilliant comic
