Synopsis

Fumi and Akira were best friends when they were little, with Akira always looking after the crybaby Fumi, but that all ended when Fumi's family moved away. Several years later, Fumi's family returned, and she and Akira happened to bump into each other on their way to school. They became friends again, quickly slipping back into old patterns. Shortly after, Fumi began dating a cool, attractive upperclassman who, coincidentally enough, had ties to Akira's current school, the prestigious Fujigaya Girls' Academy.

Background

The first volume of Aoi Hana was published digitally in English as Sweet Blue Flowers by Digital Manga Publishing under the Digital Manga Guild imprint on April 2, 2014. VIZ Media picked up the license and released the series under its VIZ Signature imprint as four 2-in-1 omnibus volumes from September 19, 2017, to June 19, 2018. It was also published in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones from October 20, 2015, to December 19, 2016.

Man, I still can't tell how much I like this story or not. This is the epitome of take the good with the bad, but overall I think I enjoyed my experience.

One thing I seldom do is talk about the art--it's usually subjective--but man does the quality vary where I read it. Sometimes it was so gorgeous that it blew my mind, and other times it looked like doodles. It affected my experience greatly at times.

Aoi Hana deserves to be in the conversation whenever the great romance and yuri manga are discussed. The art is a joy. Viz Signature has published a double volume set with 4 gorgeous books, each with 2 volumes of the manga. Reading it in this format is a pleasure. The characters and the setting are so well developed that you quickly forget it is a work of fiction.

The flaws are obvious and well documented. Instead of a manageable one or two subplots, we have a half-dozen stories involving side characters whose names we can not remember. The sheer number of short stories that interrupt the ...

The pacing was all over the place. Like, there were lots of moments where things were going by really quickly and it left me really confused. But there were also parts where the story was going way too slow, and it left me feeling bored and uninterested. I really wanted to like this manga because I had heard so many good things about it, but like this manga was really painful to read for me.
