Synopsis

Oriana, a seventeen-year-old magic student, suddenly dies alongside her boyfriend, Vincent. However, she returns from death in the body of her seven-year-old self with the memories of her past life intact—except for the knowledge of what killed her. Despite the unnecessarily and admittedly on-the-nose title, this is a series that has surprisingly sophisticated writing for a mixture of genres in anime that typically much subtlety or nuance, that being romance and fantasy. It's a generic premise (regression and amnesia) and character archetypes done tastefully with writing that drips what I can only describe as slice-of-life melancholy.

The first few chapters are by far the weakest; the plot set-up is standard and the characterisation is even more predictable. Fortunately, the writing rapidly improves before chapter 10, and the way the characters are developed is refreshingly natural. The characters, both main and side, prove to ... be endearing and remarkably well-rounded past their initial introductions. The female main character is sweet and likeable and very sympathetic, but the male lead is probably the shining gem in terms of portrayal for me. He's subject to some male lead clichés such as being academically strong and popular and handsome, but his personality is down-to-earth and grounded. He feels less like a cardboard cut-out meant to have romantic aspirations projected upon, and more like a character in his own right, just as much so as the female lead.

Many manga series have what I can only call "gendered" writing, in that the way characters are designed and stories are written feel very specifically geared towards appealing to a male or female audience. This story, however, feels closer to a gender-neutral approach in that the characters feel they're designed to suit each other and the plot, not any faceless audience and demographic.

Another thing I can particularly appreciate is how believable their chemistry is; the way their personalities and interactions are written easily sells these two being a couple who could and should work together over anyone else. There's mild misunderstandings and frustrations but so far none of them have overstayed their welcome, and both leads take steps to initiate progress in their relationship and respond to each other's feelings in a healthy way.

What else? The art is gorgeous. Character designs are distinct and easy to tell apart. The worldbuilding has actual thought put in and is woven into the background. It feels like a natural inclusion introduced throughout the story instead of the barely fleshed out "greenscreen" setting with the sole purpose of providing a stage for the romance to take place so many other Otome isekai implement. You never forget the fact this story is taking place in a fantasy world, and it's not because the characters constantly draw attention to it, it's because the characters live and breathe the magic of the setting they inhabit, which I think is the most elegant way to do it, particularly for a series where it's not the main focus.

Overall, with 5 being average and 10 being once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece:

While the regression plot is quite common, the execution and the pacing in this manga is great, and the plot twists are unexpected. The characters bring the manga to life - understandable yet distinct, and realistic without becoming predictable. The author did a great job balancing their flaws and their likability. The chemistry between the characters to be noted, and the mangaka brings out both the comedy and quiet intimacy equally well.
If you like a perfect mix of angst, yearning, comedy, fluff combined with beautiful art and a fantasy setting, this manga is for you.
Honestly im just yapping but you'll know when you read it ...
