The first nine volumes of Genshiken were published as Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture by Del Rey Manga from April 26, 2005, to November 27, 2007. Kodansha USA picked up the license and published the series from volume 10 onwards as Genshiken: Second Season from September 4, 2012, to March 13, 2018. The previous nine volumes were republished as 3-in-1 omnibus volumes. The first nine volumes were also released in Brazilian Portuguese by Editora JBC from June 2013 to May 2014.

Genshiken is easily some of the most personally influential manga Ive ever read in my life. It's a masterfully relatable and endlessly relevant coming of age story that captures one's early 20s like few other pieces of media can. It speaks to the core of the nerdy otaku experience, as well as offering emotional depth in such a turbulent time in one's life.

One of its best aspects is how it is a delightful time capsule of the early 2000s, as well as early 2010s in its second half. Thanks to being written at those exact times when it takes place, it captures an extremely realistic ... look at contemporary pop culture history. With each passing year, it keeps getting better as a testament of bygone decades. Not only it captures those two time periods, but it also places strong emphasis on the differences between them. The way which I think portrays it best is the way how the second half of the story focuses a lot more on women, their inclusion and role within otaku circles. Nerdy culture started shifting away from being strictly a "boy hobby" and its reflected in this manga's portrayal of such circles, especially the titular club. And even while the two groups' interests remain wholly different, they are on equal footing and are both allowed to be shameless about their hobbies and interests. I can only imagine what an early 2020s version of the story would look like, as nerdy culture has become more and more mainstream.

Other way Genshiken captures its time period is through the exquisite art. The backgrounds of this manga are absolutely stunning and lovingly realistic. From clubrooms, convention centers, specialty shops in Akihabara, the college campus and especially the Hikikomori-esque apartments of the main characters, each location offers immense detail in portraying nerdy culture and everything that comes with it. There's no words that easily capture the awe in which I was seeing Kousaka's room for the first time — it was such a beautiful cluttered mess. A sentiment that's true about the manga in more ways than one.

The background art however is not the only way that the manga excells at. The character designs also reflect the characters and times in which they live wonderfully. A thing some people might not expect, is the extensive focus on fashion. Not only the characters aren't chained to one outfit they aren't allowed to change, each and every one of them are masterfully crafted to reflect fashion trends of the 2000s and 2010s, they especially shine with detail on the more fashion conscious characters such as Kasukabe, Ohno or Kousaka. That's not to say however that the other cast member's outfits are worse because of it. As simple as they might be, they also reflect the characters that wear them, they dress exactly as one would expect a nerdy otaku in 2003 to look like, which only strengthens the manga's sense of realism. That also extends to the heavy focus on cosplay in the series, as it accurately reflects the trends of the time, both in terms of expression and popular franchises.

Having mentioned it already, a college campus is also a much more refreshing change of pace for a coming of age story set in Japan. So many manga focus on the high school experience with a degree of carefree attitude, looking at it as the time to "figure it all out" or "have fun while you can". Genshiken is not like that, because its characters are adults stepping into their lives on their own for the first time, it grants its characters a whole another level of autonomy. Because the cast is all adults it also doesn't shy away from adult problems and desires, such as sexuality, jobhunting, finding your place in the world. That's easily one of its greatest strengths — the way it can be so sincere and open about those experiences. It also allows it to speak to its core demographic with such a degree of understanding, it doesn't make things simpler than they actually are, it doesn't treat the reader and its characters in a condescending way, it doesn't shy away from the moments when life is messy and it knows that's okay.

Because the manga doesn't really have one central character, but a revolving cast, it allows it to tackle a variety of different struggles. The dialogue is expertly written, often touching on deeply personal issues and experiences, making each and every one connect with the reader. Among the mundane everyday issues, it offers complex looks at character relationships, difficult to navigate romantic life, dealing with trauma or exploring one's gender expression, as well as sexuality. They are disagreeable, they make mistakes and they aren't always good people either. The characters' mindesets feel wholly realistic both as living-breathing humans, but also nerdy otaku. I find it quite poetic that a manga about how struggling 20 year-olds relating their life to games and anime, can be very much used for this exact purpose as well.

The aspect of sexuality is also a wonderful facet of it being focused and aimed at adults. The manga is very open about how a sexual drive and sexuality as a whole ties into one's life and nerd culture. There is no shame in portraying it or talking about it, the characters are allowed to have desires, kinks, a sex drive, watch porn and such. I don't mean to say that it gets graphic or overly kinky, quite the contrary. Sexuality is portrayed as a matter of fact element of human life and the manga doesn't shy away from saying that those characters experience all of those things, it says the quiet parts out loud. There's a great degree of insight into the thought process of how people deal with sexual trauma, regret associated with crossing a line and creates a strong sense of understanding the distinction between fantasy and reality.

Talking about sexuality, it's also worth mentioning the aspect of exploration one's orientation, as well as gender expression through the character of Hato. Hato's life and perception of self is very complicated, very messy and thanks to it, it captures an amazing degree of sincerity. They struggle with finding an answer whether they prefer men or women, or if they're a cis femboy or a trans woman. For a lot of people, finding who they are attracted to and how they want to express themselves is a big struggle, and even if Hato's experience isn't applicable to everybody, there's a lot to be dissected and parts that are extremely relatable. This isn't however all in a vacuum, as it still works within a framework what's socially acceptable and how to fit in into those norms. It offers an in depth look at this issue and I can only commend the manga for doing this back in the early 2010s. Even if the characters don't really grasp it, can be insensitive and brash about it, also dealing with the struggling of sexualizing gender nonconformism, it provides a respectful and contemporary look at this issue from its own lens from 15 years in the past.

Of course, that's not the only place at which the manga excels at in presenting real life. Genshiken is also, very heavily about the romantic lives of its characters and all the baggage that comes with it. Navigating your love life, finding the courage to allow yourself to love someone or to be loved is not an easy task and I believe that its also captured very well. The relationships the characters form come in all different shapes and sizes, some people click instantly, while others have a lot to work through before they can confidently allow others in their lives.
Watching Ogiue coming to terms with her trauma, cracking her shell and allowing others to support her is one of the most rewarding elements of the story. The same is true for Madarame's struggle with finding love and moving from a broken heart, as well as not knowing what do to with his own life, Kasukabe learning to accept her boyfriend's hobbies, Yajima fighting with her internal feelings of inferiority, Hato finding the courage to be the person that they are, such and such. In general, seeing those characters mature is extremely rewarding, as Genshiken is first and foremost about human connections, so to see them become better and more complete people thanks to those around them fills one's heart with so much joy.

Kio-sensei's biggest strength I believe to be the way he writes dialogue and builds atmosphere. There's so much palpable emotions that I found myself at a loss for words quite often. I simply adore how it captures, without drawing attention to it, how the characters simply have less time for each other because they've graduated college, and gradually there's less and less of them without it being immediately noticeable the further it goes, every time they do appear, it's an event. The sense of community built up throughout the course of the entire run is simply excellent. There's so much love and care put into those characters growing closer together, understanding each other, finding a safe space to be true to themselves among people that accept them that I can't simply understate it. It puts a lot of value in communication, characters talking things out, understanding each other's perspectives. The emphasis on healthy and honest conversations echoes throughout the entire series and it remains one of its strongest takeaways. I can only talk about it so much, but there are some things that one just needs to experience themselves

I'm quite aware that I'm only talking about the series in superlatives, but that's not to say the series is without flaws. It can get overly complicated and messy, sometimes it made me feel quite uncomfortable, not every character offered a lot of depth or was utilized to their full potential. However, a lot of it feels somewhat purposeful. As I've mentioned a few times already, portraying how life can be messy is one of the manga's biggest strengths and in a way, it itself being messy serves as a kind of meta commentary on that very aspect of the creative process. That in itself is also heavily focused on with Ogiue, Hato's and Yajima's relationship with their art. I can see Kio-sensei's struggle with creating this manga as much as Ive seen it in his own characters having difficulties with theirs.

I'd be amiss not to mention Genshiken's very own anime adaptation and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better one. Not because it's all that great, but because it's so delightfully authentic. Its split into three seasons and OVAs one needs to seek out in order to make sense of the plot, they are made by completely different studios, their color choices are often poor, they cut corners a lot, skip entire important arcs, voice actors change between seasons, it's a mess. But it is a beautiful mess that fully captures the energy and trends of anime series of the time (corresponding to the manga's time of release). They feel quintessentially 2000s and 2010s, it's reflected in every fiber of those adaptations, to even the openings. They can be ugly, shoddy and really difficult to watch at times, but for a series that's fully dedicated to being a time capsule of its time, one cannot really ask for a better adaptation. It has all the good and all the bad.

Trying to muster all of my confidence in this series, I can only admit that it is one of the very best manga I've ever read. It offers such a real look into the lives of Japanese college nerds in the early 2000s and it builds such a strong sense of community around them. It wholeheartedly affirms this sense that no matter how weird a person can be, they can find their people and their place in the world, one that gives them comfort and allows them to blossom and be unapologetic about who they are.

tl;dr: A manga with a broad story of a club that is mostly a lot of amusing light hearted small fast paced stories that build up, but flubs a bit with a final story that’s much longer, heavier, and messier.

Genshiken is a manga that changes tremendously as it goes on. It cycles through multiple years of a college club, and thus members graduate while others join. However, members that have already graduated still maintain connections with the club and pop up sometimes, with one such graduate becoming incredibly important. Still, for the most part it is the characters that are active members of the club ... that are the focus, and for the most part the complete stories of characters are told while they are still in college. This is done primarily through decently small and amusing story lines with quick character and relationship development that works very well in making characters likable and establishing bonds that the reader can get invested in, followed by the character and relationship development that occurred continuing to be shown off in the background as the manga begins focusing on other characters. That the development that occurred continues to be shown off even when not in the focus surprisingly adds a lot of value to the manga, in that it feels like most each of these stories get an extended epilogue that hits the right notes in just showing characters having grown and being happy.

The exception to this is the last storyline, or rather set of storylines. A common theme for the various stories in this manga is coming to accept yourself for who you are and trying to connect with others as your true self. This starts off with a character coming to accept themselves as an otaku and making friends as such. It progresses to a fujoshi hating herself for her interests but finding love that would accept her even with them. And then it progresses to a character struggling with their gender identity and sexual orientation. This last jump is pretty major and results in the manga getting considerably heavier than before. As such, the manga spends more on this portion than all the stories before it. This story has some good moments, however, this story is also wrapped up in another story that is somewhat related but not entirely, centered around what is essentially a bizarre and maybe somewhat realistic look at how a harem story could play out. Now this story too is really interesting, and considering the character at it's center is easily the most likable one in the manga and one the reader just wants to find happiness one that feels easy to get invested in. However, both of these stories are occurring at once, resulting in each feeling like they have really slow pacing, which is the opposite of how the manga is outside of this, and furthermore that each isn’t allowing room for the other to breath. As a result, despite the slow pacing for most of these storylines, the endings to them, and the ending to the manga overall seems kind of rushed and a bit arbitrary. The actual ending itself I found pretty satisfying simply in terms of where things are when it ends, but because of how rushed some aspects were, here more than with any of the stories before it I simply wanted the manga to continue so I could see where things lead as was the case with the various other stories that had reached a conclusion but continued in the background, so I can’t say I’m complete satisfied with the ending.

It is really important to note that while there is a good amount of plot and things can get pretty heavy towards the end, this is ultimately a comedy manga, and it does quite well in this regard. There is a lot of variety to the comedy due to how the subjects and characters in focus change quite a bit. A lot of it is centered around otaku culture with a crazy number of references, but even within that it felt like there was a good amount of variety so it didn't feel like it was getting repetitive. The art is solid enough at telling the story in a clear manner, but for the most part it doesn’t try to look all that unique or visually pleasing, though it is pretty good at that too when it feels like it's clearly trying to.

Genshiken is a slice of life comedy about a college otaku club.

To start, I'll first state that I like to split Genshiken into three parts, based on the generation of the members of the club. There is the first part, with Sasahara, Saki, and Kousaka. Then, there is the second part, after Ogiue and Kuchi join, and then finally the third part with Hato, Yoshitake, and Yajima. While it's hard to choose a favorite, I think that the second part is the strongest, followed by the third, and then the first. If I were to rate them, I'd give the first part a solid 8, ...
