Manga 'Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai' Gets TV Anime

Publishing company Kadokawa announced a television anime adaptation of Tarou Yuri's Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai (Kaya-chan Isn't Scary) manga on Friday, revealing a teaser visual (pictured).

Yuri began serializing the supernatural manga on the Kurage Bunch website in April 2022. Shinchosha published the fifth volume on April 9, with the sixth volume planned for a November 9 release.

Synopsis
Kaya-chan is infamous at kindergarten for being a troublemaker. But Ms. Chie, who's been assigned to look after her, soon discovers Kaya's hidden abilities. Get ready for the ultimate horror-action adventure set in kindergarten!

I've read a bit of the manga, it's pretty fun. A bit spookier than Mieruko-Chan.

@RobertBobert Ah, then it was very different than Dark Gathering. Kaya-chan is much more like Mieruko-chan. But while Mieruko-chan still has it's comedic moment, Kaya-chan is much more serious and dark (recent chaps barely has any comedy), a horror-thriller even if you may. But this time with some action sequences thrown, that surprisingly doesn't tone down the bleakness of the overall stories. I'd even dare say the tone of the title is actually closer to Kuro, another horror-thriller title (it's not actually as depressing as Kuro, since it does still have comedic/cute moment here and there, but still the same horror-thriller type).

Edit: That's ofc provided the upcoming anime adaptation managed to do Kaya-chan justice however. We never know this days, what with a manga title as fantastic as Sasakoi got humiliated by its anime adaptation like that. I mean, Kaya-chan is actually surprisingly quite dark, I'm actually concerned that they might tone the bleakness down since the main chara is supposedly a kindergartener, and make the adaptation more comedic and light hearted instead.

@uncleqrow I remember Reina (I liked this manga for many reasons, but I need to read it again to refresh my memory), but I don't know Kaya-chan well enough to draw any conclusions. All I can say is that Dark Gathering is, in its formula, a yokai-focused battle shonen horror. Or seinen, I don't remember.

I don't know abt Dark Gathering, since I don't read/watch it. But, from reading your replies alone, it does feels like it's fans might like Kaya-chan as well, since Kaya-chan do has combat exorcism sequences as well.
And as a side note: Might I also suggest Furyou Tamashi Reina as well (currently not adapted, sadly)? I personally don't consider it a horror, since it wasn't creepy/scary at all (it might actually be considered comedy instead). But it does features combat exorcism, and the charas and the situations they're thrown in are pretty absurd, funny, and interesting as well.

Edit: Furyou Tamashi Reina IS an action-comedy featuring ghosts and exorcism.... MAL doesn't even put the "horror" tag for it, just a simple "supernatural" tag. wwwww

Hell yeah! This manga is such an underrated little gem, such a shame that the translations have come to a halt.
Hopefully this series will get more traction with the anime (i doubt it but still a man can only dream)

@Antanaru Mieruko is classic J-Horror, where a significant element of horror is achieved through a sense of despair and inevitability in interaction with the most scary and vile ghost monsters. If you watched the original Grudge before it became a cash cow, you know what I mean. Dark Gathering subjectively worked worse for me, since the stronger anime tropes made it seem like a dark fantasy battle shonen, rather than a classic horror like Mieruko. Although both are seinen manga for the same audience as far as I know. However, with Michiru's current arc, it seems like Mieruko is also trying to become more anime-ish.

@uncleqrow Haven't seen Mieruko, so can't comment on this. I think horror manga at best can work as thriller anime. Anime won't be faithful to the source material by giving up on horror but at least it might be entertaining. I don't remember the title anymore, but there was a series with something about vampires in a remote village. It definitely wasn't a horror anymore, more like a popcorn flick, but I remember enjoying myself while watching it.

@Antanaru Not necessarily. Mieruko-chan adaptation sucessfully managed to retain the manga's creepiness afterall (to a point at least). Should Kaya-chan's adaptation managed to do so, then we got ourselves a W. Let's be real tho, horror anime was never creepy, let alone scary (only one anime managed to creep me out so far: Ghost Hunt). So eventhough Mieruko-chan's adaptation is not scary even a bit, but it still managing to retain some of the creepiness from the manga is already a huge W. We can only hope Kaya-chan's adaptation will follow Mieruko-chan adaptation successes.

On another note, I actually like Mobu-san tho... He's fun, just randomly appearing everywhere.... wwwwwww

It'll probably end up like Dark Gathering. This type of horror manga doesn't translate well into anime. The scary part is your own mind filling up the gaps based on images and anime removes all of that. Now that I think about it, both series suffer from an out of place character. Dark Gathering had the love interest which was more annoying than unsettling and this one has a similarly annoying cliche otaku fan of Kaya. I dropped the manga not long after the introduction of that character.

Fuck yeah! Well deserved.
Hopefully it's a great adaptation, or at least ends faithfully with one season to let the chance of a second in the future when the manga has a bit more content.

I'd also love for the manga to get licensed.

It's really an underrated manga with a lot of potential.

My reaction to this:
1. repeatedly checking that I'm not dreaming
2. repeatedly checking that today is not Apr 1st (despite knowing that it is already Nov, but still....)
3. If not bc I'm currently working at the office, I'd scream!!!!
