Yamaga Hiroyuki was born March 23, 1962 in Niigata, Japan. He is a director, writer and producer for anime, and has worked as the president and representative director of studio Gainax.

Together with then fellow Osaka Geijutsu University students Akai Takami and Anno Hideaki, he created the opening animation for the 20th Japan SF Exposition, Daicon, held in 1981. He was the director. Soon after, at the request of Studio Nue, Yamaga "went professional," joining the production staff for Choujikuu Yousai Macross in 1982.

Yamaga began working on the production of the animated movie Ouritsu Uchuugun: Honneamise no Tsubasa in 1984; Gainax was founded the same year. The movie was released in 1987, becoming an instant cult classic as a legendary "feature-length animation movie created by a group of anonymous youngsters."

Yamaga has also garnered praise for his screenwriting for works including Top o Nerae! and Kidou Senshi Gundam 0080: Pocket no Naka no Sensou. Since then, he has been working on many Gainax projects.
