I think the beauty of anime IS the sense of childish wonder. People can become so cheerless when growing up, but that has nothing to do with maturity. My definition of maturity is learning to be unselfish. Losing one's sense of childish wonder is not maturity, it's tragedy.

I'm certain that anime fans have the highest IQ out of any genre (except, perhaps, the documentary crowd). I've also read that highly intelligent people enjoy children's literature more than the average person. There's nothing we can do for people who watch and become concerned they'll look foolish for liking something they consider childish, and stop watching in order to protect their pride. They've chosen their own cheerless prison. The truth is that most of the best things in life are simple.

I look at people who scoff at anime like cat haters. Cat haters think they know all about cats, but most have never had real exposure to them, or had a bad experience and drew improper wider conclusions about the subject. If someone thinks the Transformers movies and Michael Bay films are well done, I would have to change the subject. My disgust over dumbed down Hollywood is the biggest reason I've latched onto all Asian programming.

So, as for my ratings. I'm no pro. I believe that technical and emotional aspects are a critical part of the score. As would mirror real life, the emotional payoff carries greater weight. I can't imagine rating something a 10 that doesn't touch my heart, but I could give something that's technically flawed but emotionally brilliant a 10. An example would be the show Love & Redemption. It's special effects are pathetic in places, but emotionally - I had to pop a Xanax to get to the end. 🤣

I've rated Demon Slayer 9.3 but rounded up to the next whole number. It starts slowly, and even S4 dragged slightly, but it has very high highpoints. I think Insouke and Zenitsu are two of the best characters ever. The fight in the entertainment district is legendary. The art is elevated and the story is fun. I'm not officially at a 10, though.

Solo Leveling blew me away. I watched it again immediately and made my son watch it with me. It had been forever since I wanted to rewatch something right away. While no production is perfect, I just don't have any complaints about it. The art is fine, but during the most intense moments, they produced truly exciting images.

Before I did a full dive into anime, I became a Kdrama junkie and then I branched into Cdramas - China does the best fantasy in the world. Solo Leveling is Korean, and I was already steeped into that culture. I think that drew me further in.

I look at the space between a 9 and a 10 as entirely personal. I feel like I hand out 7's and 8's like candy, but I'm only watching stuff that others have rated in the 6's & up. I don't give out 10's willy-nilly. That's true of 9's as well, actually.

I try to mix my personal preference with fairness. There's shows I've rated a 7 that I'll rewatch before some of my 9's because I like some of my 7's more than some of my 9's. My ratings are not my personal rankings.

Apologies. I do ramble on.

Oh.

Not sure what to say. They're a combo of technical merit and how the shows touch the heart. A show that is technically perfect won't get over a 9 if it doesn't move me.

I always check ratings out before I watch, but I don't read any reviews beforehand, because I found that they corrupted my opinion. Group-think is a real thing.

I try to be as generous as possible without being simple-minded about it. I think a point could be deducted from most of my ratings for for greater accuracy, but I prefer to be generous.

My tastes are broad. I literally like every single genre though much of the horror is too much for me..

Other than that, I'm over 60. We likely have a generational disconnect.

Finally, I didn't watch anime until around 2021, after I became disabled, so I'm still a noob. Perhaps I'm easing into intermediate level at this time. I'm seriously angry that I missed all of this in my past life. Better late than never.

I'm not very good online - too stupid to know if you are genuinely curious or just trying to be mean. I hope it's the former, not the latter.

It's a very healthy thing to read and communicate with folks who think differently. That how we grow.

Take care!
