The first time I watched this anime, I became interested in its source material—the visual novel. Later, I played the visual novel, took time to read the manga, and rewatched the anime. I came to a conclusion: both the anime and manga adaptations are severely limited by their scope and feel incomplete (the main storyline of this visual novel spans roughly twenty to thirty hours; factoring in all the individual routes for playable characters brings it closer to seventy hours).

(If you haven't finished it yet, you might want to skip this spoiler-filled paragraph and move on to the next one.) In my view, only the first few episodes of the anime had any merit (though still far less detailed than the visual novel). Later on, it hastily mixed together the personal storylines of several major characters from the visual novel, summarizing them in a very short span.

The manga fares better in this regard—it follows the visual novel's early plot only in its initial chapters, then focuses on the main storyline rather than character arcs, resulting in far greater narrative coherence than the anime. However, its mere four volumes feel rushed for this work, so I can't call it the ideal adaptation.
If you have no interest in experiencing the original visual novel, my advice is to stick with the anime. The manga offers slightly better narrative coherence than the anime, but it rushes through the later plot. Without prior exposure to the visual novel, you'll likely find some plot jumps and omissions confusing.

I do prefer the spin-off series of this manga. But you're right—adding the main series to my favorites as the representative of the entire collection, as you suggested, is a good idea.

The Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai manga series. It has a total of 15 volumes, but MyAnimeList only lists the 4 main volumes, excluding the side stories and four-panel comics. If they were included, I'd probably add them to my favorites.

I've already added the manga to my favorites. Some manga I've watched aren't listed on MyAnimeList, so even if I like them, I can't add them to my favorites.
