I avoid horror/gore animes as well, but if they seem popular, it's likely due to the younger fanbase that anime has (imo)! There's still plenty of space for heartwarming anime titles too, :) they just get 'overshadowed' by the typical shounen titles that have "mass appeal."
As for finding and adding other MAL users, I will DM you with some screenshots!
