Japan has a better quality of life than Canada (imo), is much safer, has functional healthcare, etc. I studied at a Japanese university on an exchange program and have since moved back on a spouse visa.

I make and sell adult games, so I'm self-employed and live pretty comfortably by Japanese standards.

Not recommending Frieren is insane *lol* That'd be like not recommending AoT to action fans or something. It's just gotten too big to not recommend for newbies, as that's what the average anime fan have gravitated towards. When recommending something, you have to put yourself in their shoes and imagine if they would like it. Despite your affinity to Frieren, as long as you think it's solid, that's the type of general stuff you recommend. I would still recommend Cowboy Bebop, Demon Slayer, FmA to others despite me not liking them, cuz I know they're well made shows. Though if you still find it hard to recommend Frieren, then that's fair too, nothing wrong with that.

Anyways, as for why I loved it. There's lots of reasons, but one that stands out is what you mentioned actually; with how the story played out. I loved the mix of emotional backstory, cool magic action, skips, progression, world & character building, etc etc the best. Haven't seen too many shows do this in general where they mix a bunch of elements so seamlessly together. You kind of hit the bullseye on that one.

Probably doesn't answer your inquiry, but I believe Frieren to be a massive win for the fantasy genre, which sadly has been replaced by low level isekais this decade. Most refreshing anime fantasy I've seen in a very, very long time, since I started One Piece several years ago. Frieren being such a good non-isekai fantasy anime might be a part of the reason so many praise it so highly too, but I'm just theorizing.

Anyways, good to see you back still watching anime and I finally started watching your recommendation 'Vinland Saga'. Pretty solid opening so far. Thanks for that xD

Vejo que voltou do hiato recentemente, o que fez voltar? O que tem assistido de bom? Algo para recomendar?

Acabei reassistindo para responder. Patlabor 2 é profundamente político e explora a situação pós Segunda Guerra no Japão, então é um filme que se beneficia muito de contexto histórico-cultural. Explora o tema principal da desmilitarização do Japão, tanto pela influência dos EUA, quanto pelo prevalecimento de um posicionamento pacifista pela população japonesa. Além de outros temas tangencialmente relacionados que estão presentes em outros filmes do Oshii como natureza x tecnologia e o nosso propósito no mundo. Gosto bastante por ser um anime que leva o meio a sério, não cedendo ao que acabamos por esperar do conteúdo mais comum com adolescentes de colegial e batalhas extravagantes (não querendo desmerecer); explora um tópico bem particular, nos fazendo refletir; e é claro, é um anime de alta qualidade; a arte, animação e cinematografia são belíssimas. Assistindo novamente, achei os temas muito pertinentes atualmente, apesar de ter sido produzido a mais de 30 anos, então é algo que me surpreendeu positivamente. Eu gosto de obras que tem uma identidade forte e que me apresentam perspectivas diferentes, então acho que deu para entender por que eu gosto tanto de Patlabor 2.
