That is kind of you to say. My life has certainly been less chaotic but probably less interesting lol. I would say mostly good things but did experience one significant family loss. Regarding school, I graduated with an associate and then bachelor's degree in chemistry. I liked the community college --> university pathway, but it also meant that by the time you got to know people it was time to graduate, lol. A bachelor's in chemistry generally doesn't pay too well, or at least not for its difficulty and risks. As a result, I wanted to continue onto to graduate school. Currently studying polymer science and engineering, with emphasize on polymer synthesis and structure-property relationships (more on the chemistry side than the engineering side lol). Post graduate school I hope to end up as a synthetic polymer chemist in R&D for my local chemical company back home, although I feel like that chance might be slim given how the company is currently doing... I am hoping things improve by the time I finish with my PhD.
My dad is an alcoholic too. He used to drag me to pubs a lot when I was young and I hated every second of it. I'm a teetotaler to this day.
I agree, it is hard to find Australians even online. I've even tried to find Australia forums on Reddit but (as expected of Reddit) I feel like there's no individualism, it's just people trying to outswear each other and patting themselves on the back about how we're better than "the Yanks". I think there is a big loneliness epidemic in Australia. Even though we embrace inclusive spaces, at the end of the day, the dominant social spaces are drinking venues and sports clubs... I'll stop there before I get too cynical haha.
Anyway, like I said, there's nothing we can do except keep looking for little groups/subcultures that can fulfill us.
How have you been?
I know you swore off apps but I heard on Bumble, there is an option to find platonic friends there. I’ve contemplated using it before but… idk I guess there’s something pathetic about using apps to find friends (at least for me). I think all we can do is just keep looking for niches and circles until we find the right one. Someone’s been recommending me to go to a Japanese conversation practice group… I’m trying to muster up the courage for that rn.
Glad you had a nice break in Thailand. Wish I could go there. I’m Thai on my mom’s side so there’s a chance I could get conscripted into the Thai army for a few years if I go there again LOL
I don’t blame you for not knowing anything about Perth haha. I guess I don’t really know too much about Brisbane either (I only know ‘The Gabba’, Moreton Bay, stuff like that). I admit Perth is not the most exciting city. The only worthwhile touristy site is probably Rottnest Island (do you know what a quokka is?). Other than that, there isn’t anything you couldn’t see in another city. Just visit Melbourne, that’s where all the young people here want to be xD
Perth is not a bad city though. Yes, it is quite far away from everywhere and people here definitely feel that. But overall, I think we’re quite proud of where we live, there’s enough going on to keep us occupied. It’s a good place to live if you like the outdoors.
I don’t think I’d like to live in Perth forever though. It seems like you work with computers so I guess it’s easier to live wherever you want to, which I'm sure is convenient. I’m really sorry to hear about what you went through, that would mess anyone up emotionally. I just hope you’re able to turn a new leaf and find peace 👍 I think settling in a nice, laidback place like Brisbane will do you good.
(btw pls ignore how late I sent this message, I do live in Perth I promise xD I just can't seem to sleep on Saturday nights).
Perth is alright, sunny as always. Luckily this summer hasn’t been as hot as previous years (at least, so far). I’ve been trying to get outside as often as I can before it inevitably hits 40°C+ again and my body completely shuts down haha.
I see in your profile you’ve got ‘US/AU’. So do you split your time between the US as well?
And I have a laptop that runs on Windows 8.1, which I use for PC gaming. I (almost) never connect that laptop to the Internet. Except for getting updates from Steam.
It is incredibly unsafe to surf the Internet with Windows. Setting aside the NSA spyware, Windows is also incredibly prone to viruses. There is no perfect security. But using Linux is safer than using Windows, that is for sure.
I don't play any PC games, besides Visual Novels (VNs). And these VNs can easily run on a Windows 10 VM on Linux.
