I use a system similar to WAR in Major League Baseball. It's a statistics that tracks how many Wins Above Replacement a player is, or how much better a certain individual is compared to a hypothetical average player which is used as a standard.
For me, I use Gains Above Replacement, or GAR. Essentially, how much have I gained from this particular anime over a replacement-level, average show.
Using 5 to indicate a perfectly average show, anything above that indicates how much I felt I gained from the show, whether it's a greater appreciation for brilliant writing, camera direction, characters, etc. Anything below a 5 means that I feel that I lost more than I received. Since each anime takes time to watch, it has to be worth the time I invested in it. If it isn't, then I rate it accordingly and give it a negative GAR (a 4, 3, 2, or 1).
Thus, my shows aren't necessarily rated comparative to each other even when they're in the same score range, but against a 5, a replacement anime.
For more details on my ratings, each title on my list has a small description that pops up when you hover over it. Feel free to ask away about any of them!
