Welcome…
I’ve been an Anime fan since 2020 but first dabbled into it in my early teens, only through watching stuff on YouTube like Attack on Titan. I also saw various Ecchi/Harem Anime (most I still don’t remember) such as Highschool of the Dead and Rail Wars.
I became a serious fan in 2020 after checking out the Anime and Manga of JoJo’s Bizarre for the first time, as well as getting back into my very first Manga (Pokémon Adventures), which I first read back in 2016 after discovering it in my school library. My first time experience with it is still one of the best I've had with any story and informed me for the first time of how great Manga storytelling is.
I enjoy both Anime and Manga but I'd say I’m slightly more passionate about Manga overall, partly I think because I already enjoyed reading comics (specifically Marvel) prior to becoming a real fan of the medium.
In most cases, I believe Manga also feel a lot more personal and intimate in comparison to Anime, or some moments just hit harder in them. I also enjoy simply being able to experience reading Manga at my own pace and letting myself take in certain moments.
All the Anime I watch I view either through YouTube, Netflix or other mainstream streaming sites. If not, I always buy the Blu-ray/DVDs for everything else that I'm interested in (I have no need or really care for either the Crunchyroll or piracy route) or for my favourites that are no longer available to watch on said streaming platforms.
I almost exclusively only ever read Manga physically because I’m not a fan of digital and much prefer having an actual physical book to hold and collect compared to simply just reading on my own device.
I'm an equal enjoyer of watching in sub and (English) dub for the most part, but if I have the choice I usually watch in sub the majority of the time and in dub mostly for Anime that are adapted from manga I have already read or am planning to read. This is because it’s really important for me to know a character’s voice and how they sound in English so then I will be able to hopefully always hear them in my head when reading Manga.
I score the Anime and Manga I've completed based on my own personal enjoyment and also emotional investment I had in them.
My personal rating system looks something like this:
10. Only reserved for the very few stories that have had the biggest emotional impacts on me.
9. Great. Consistently had a great time with minus maybe one particular flaw. One of the most memorable and enjoyable stories I’ve experienced.
8. Very good. Enjoyed it a lot despite some flaws, but it had some really memorable moments or characters that left quite an impression on me.
7. Way above average/good. Have problems with it but the pros outweigh the cons and I still have a positive opinion on it overall.
6. Slightly above average/serviceable. Good enough but I have multiple problems with it or it didn’t quite leave enough of an impression on me to want to feel like experiencing again.
5. Average/unimpressive. Had some enjoyability with it but it’s outweighed by the negatives and I didn’t care much for it overall in the end.
4. Bad/below average. Had some good moments or episodes maybe but I actively disliked it or it got worse over time.
3. Very bad. Only reserved for stuff that completely bored me to death or just straight up put me to sleep.
