I'm first and former king of the /r/TrueAnime subreddit, the primary active mod in its expansion from 5 subscribers to 5,000. Over there I'm known as BrickSalad, and Seabury is my real name. Although that subreddit is my claim to fame, I also am proud of my blog, which is dead at the moment but has some great posts, the most famous of which is an exploration of fanservice and offensiveness.
My field of interest is in the history and production of anime, and my particular artistic tastes tend towards visual and musical psychology, with a strong emphasis of emotion and metaphor. I am a huge fan of Akiyuki Shinbo, and he's pretty much my favorite director, particularly for his older solo material (Le Portrait de Petite Cossette). I also love Osamu Dezaki, Kunihiko Ikuhara, and Hideaki Anno. All four of them capture those tastes I was talking about. Of course, to give respect where respect is due, the two *masters* in my mind are still Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oishii. My favorites are personal taste, but respect dictates the caveat that those two are perhaps the greatest geniuses in the industry. My ratings are the way they should be, above 5 is good, below 5 is bad, exactly 5 is a bit of a wash. No being offended that I gave a show you liked a 6, because that means I liked it too! The reason I haven't rated anything 2 or 1 is because if I started an anime that horrible, there's no way I'd possibly finish it. |

I didn't watch as much as I would like during the 2010s as I was busy raising 4 kids :P there all 20+ now, with the exception of my daughter.
I really should back track having time is a problem here though new stuff keeps coming out and I am gradually backtracking :)
If u do read manga then you should try this
The only thing I know about Evangelion is that famous theme song which is really catchy... maybe after I finish Monster I'll have a look at it (personally though, I like reading the Manga first before seeing any show) is the Manga good for Evangelion?
If you've seen HxH then you definitely need to see Yu Yu Hakusho! Hmmm... he stopped halfway thru the marathon huh? wow that's really unfortunate. From what I've seen from Shinbo in YYH, I definitely need to check out more of his works.
but about Golden Kamuy... it's definitely high up in my list of the next-to-watch shows. I love historical anime and from what I've heard it takes place in 18th century Japan (correct me if I'm wrong). Idk if you've seen Yu Yu Hakusho which Shinbo was involved with as a director, but his style screams Dezaki Osamu's "postcard memories"... although it's more on the polychromatic side than the monochrome style of Osamu. It feels like a more colorful version of it.
Honestly, from what the shows that I've seen that one is the closest I've seen to his style.
my taste in anime leans more towards olders shows. Rn, I'm going on a journey of watching shows from the Golden Era, 90s 80s and some from the 70s.
I definitely am rn! It's been really depressing straight from the beginning, I'm a sucker for animes directed by Dezaki Osamu. It's so much better than today's animation tbh. I saw you're also watching Ashita no Joe 2, which uses the same animation style. How do you like so far? It's an all-time great of mine, Joe Yabuki is one hell of a character.
