Again, the story doesn't really work without the MC (trying to avoid name cuz it's a psudeo spoiler) being a bland recluse. Even if we ignore the almost overt Hegelian stuff with dialectics and recognition, she literally cannot be with someone who has their own friends or things to do or her whole idea of "normalcy and reality" doesn't work.

Secondly, you can't say there is nothing wrong with self-insertion fantasies and then go on to use it to critique the film. I still take issue with calling this movie a self-insert movie for male audiences (not that I even think there is anything wrong with that, but because it just isn't). Saying almost all main characters in fiction are self inserts is crazy. I don't really know what to tell you other than they are not. Yes, we empathize with them and often discover the main theme of the story with them, but most of the time they are their own people.

The comment amount the media literacy award is just sarcasm. Also I'm not responding to any more of this because I don't want to spam your comment board, I just thought your reading of the movie was dumb.

Wow, we are really stretching the definition of "self insert mc" when the narrative literally requires a recluse for the story to work. The MC's struggle in "I want to eat your pancreas" is literally from an unrecognized individual into someone aware and cognizant of intersubjectivity; it is a hegelian story. The entire point of Sakura becoming enamored with him is because she needed that type of person due to her illness. The story literally doesn't work from either side of their circumstances change which is why it's kinda dumb to call the mc a self insert imo. Like if we are calling the emotional pain the mc goes through in the story worthy of "self-insertion," I have to ask what character is not self-insertion at this point.
