Anime is one of those things that's just ever-present in my life, and has been for nearly as long as I can remember, so I don't often think about just when the obsession started.
My earliest memory of watching anime is when I was a kid, lying around bored in the summer and being thrilled to discover they were showing some anime movies on the Sci-Fi channel. I don't know why, but I always thought anime was cool - it's not like someone introduced me to it. The first movie I saw was about silver-haired maidens, but I forgot the title, so if anyone knows what I'm talking about I'd be much obliged if you'd tell me. ~.^
Since I grew up in the '90s before high-speed internet access was common, I didn't get to watch very much anime. As a teenager I saw a few episodes of 3x3 Eyes, Vampire Princess Miyu, and of course, Akira, but that was about it - my choices were pretty much limited to what you could pick up at the local video rental place.
Then, when I was 17, my anime-obsessed friend introduced me to Slayers. I fell in love with Priestess Sylphiel (the origins of my screen name), sang along to the opening theme song, and read my first fanfic (it was Xelloss/Zelgadis, haha). My friend also introduced me to some classics like El Hazard, Gundam Wing, and Fushigi Yuugi. If I had been merely interested as a child, watching these series pretty much cemented my fate as an otaku.
For a few years after high school I still didn't watch much anime, again, due to still using dial-up, and also becoming a mother and going back to school. Now that my life has settled down a lot, I'm getting back into seriously watching anime. Slayers is still a favorite of mine, but it's been replaced by Noir as my Favorite Anime of All Time. I just . . . can't say enough good things about Noir. It owns my soul. So does Death Note, to a lesser degree.
Currently (February '08) I'm busy with work and don't have a lot of free time, so I've had to put two series (Evangelion, Hyper Police) on hold. Some friends have encouraged me to start Kare Kano, which I've fallen in love with after 3 episodes, and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, which is soooo dramatic and a bit of a guilty pleasure, like watching soaps. :)

=) With my crappy skills in photoshop I plan to make a few pics of my favourite couples and of course Hibari and Saiga will be there =D I couldn't understand why Saiga didn't like her! Haha... I guess the creators liked Kagura too much xP
Hey, my friend comes from San Jose.. I think.. It's near San Fransico, right?
I wanted Saiga to fall in love with Hibari... but... =(
