No matter how many times I rewatch it, I will always spot something new or some sort of foreshadowing. Here are some thoughts on the series. (❌Don't read unless you have seen the series and Rebellion❌) Why was Sayaka so distraught over her soul being removed to be outside her body?: It's just the Ship of Theseus. If you're afraid of "scientific" teleportation because it would "just be a clone", then Sayaka's despair makes a little more sense. Her body was redesigned and altered for the sole purpose of being a battle machine, WITHOUT her consent. And a lot of this has to do with Sayaka's mindset as well. Sayaka has been a "normal" girl her whole life, and never really went through any particularly arduous trials. Because of this status quo, she's understandably very shaken when such a big change happens. On the other hand, Kyoko has been through so much stuff, that this is simply another shitty thing to add to the pile. (This is also probably the case for Homura.) There's also the fact that Kyoko has embraced her inhumanity by the time the anime takes place. Additionally, a Catholic magical girl in one of the spin-off manga, is actually DELIGHTED when she learns the truth about soul gems. Simply because it's proof that God has given them souls. Or something. And she's happy that she's able to see her soul as a tangible object. My take on the origin story of the Walpurgisnacht: The Walpurgisnacht was originally a magical girl who wished for the ability to absorb other magical girls into herself and take their strengths/abilities. Once absorbed, they would obviously die, which is good for her because: Magical girls often clash together, and fewer magical girls meant more grief seeds for the magical girl absorber. She would go on to become the most powerful magical girl of her time, and henceforth one of the strongest witches of all time; a witch that can eat its own kind and becomes stronger over time. What is the purpose of familiars if witches are born from magical girls?: Every living being attempts to spread offspring, and witches are no exception. Witches give birth to familiars that eventually grow up to become full-fledged witches. Also, think about it, if witches could only be born from magical girls, then wouldn't the witch population be much less? There would not be enough witches and grief seeds for everyone. Fewer grief seeds=less soul gem cleaning=higher probability of a magical girl becoming a witch instead of being killed=higher probability of a magical girl witnessing a witch transformation, and thus the secret about witches being magical girls would have spread much more. Also, witches would have been much scarcer, and so magical girls would probably notice if a witch conveniently appeared in the local area when one of their magical girl friends disappeared. If you are wondering why they give birth to familiars and not baby magical girls, you can refer to the evolution of species. Humans came from apes, but that does not mean we give birth to apes, right? Homura's train of thought in the rebellion split: As Homura lay in that stone coffin looking thing, she saw Madoka, and on an impulse decided that she would try to grab Madoka and keep her by her side. Her thought processes at the time were either: "I just want Madoka back. At this point I will do anything to save her, even if I have to do so forcefully." (This is a desperate Homura) OR "If I grab Madoka's hands and never let go, it is possible that I can stop her from having to go back to Magical girl heaven, and she will finally be truly saved. The Law of Cycles was designed to save magical girls from their cruel fate, but not the opposite. So if I try to save Madoka from the Law of Cycles, maybe something good will happen" (This is an irrational Homura) OR "I remember that Kyubey said that the isolation field prevented Madoka from being omnipresent or omniscient, so maybe if I grab onto her, she will not be able to predict it. If I do not let go after that, it is possible that I can forcefully drag Madoka back into this world." (This is a rational Homura) OR "I just want Madoka back. At this point I will do anything to save her, even if I have to do so forcefully. (Desperate) If I grab Madoka's hands and never let go, it is possible that I can stop her from having to go back to Magical girl heaven, and she will finally be truly saved. The Law of Cycles was designed to save magical girls from their cruel fate, but I instead try to save the Madoka then something good may happen. (Irrational) I remember that Kyubey said that the isolation field prevented Madoka from being omnipresent, so maybe if I grab onto her, she will not be able to predict it. If I do not let go after that, it is possible that I can forcefully drag Madoka back into this world. (Rational)" She now realises that her plan actually might work, which is why she smiles as Madokami descends toward Homura. (This is the most realistic Homura) Homura's moral scale: Homura is not a good person, and she was never implied to be a good person. A hero is someone who holds the world as the highest priority, but a villain is someone who holds their goals as the highest priority. Homura is a villain, but I'm not saying that the reasons for her becoming this way are wrong; in fact, I think that Homura is very well-characterised, and her motives all fit within her character. However, having a dark past never excuses evil deeds, and it will not in this case either. The full ramifications of her actions have not yet been fully explored, but by trapping the incubators, we can assume that: -People who require magical assistance and would normally want to become magical girls, can no longer choose that path. The incubators are probably too busy fighting the wraiths to recruit more magical girls, so no more girls will get the chance to have their wishes come true. And also, why would the Incubators contract magical girls, if the Incubators are anyway going to fight the wraiths themselves? This can also be seen as a good thing, as no more girls can be tricked. However, if we look at the case of Mami, whose wish saved her life, we can assume that many more cases like hers will be unable to be saved, just so that Madoka can be happy. -Countless civilisations (including humanity) are now going to either stagnate or decline in progress. This can be assumed because Kyubey said once that without them, humanity would still be living in caves. Homura is threatening the lives of all in the universe just for the happiness of one person: Madoka. -There was a reason that Madoka wanted to erase witches "by [her] own hands." Madoka was incredibly smart to anticipate that the Law of Cycles needed an intelligent being guiding it. We even see proof of this in Rebellion. If the LoC were non-sentient, then either Homura would just remain trapped, or Kyubey's machinations would have succeeded. Neither of which is really ideal. And if you consider the case of the MULTIVERSE, then there are probably hundreds of cases like this. Where Madoka had to use her intelligence and her ability to make decisions, in order to save the magical girls. In fact, most of the MadoMagi spin-off series deal with anomalies like this. Memory loss, magical girls with the power to grant wishes, and so many more. The LoC NEEDS to be sentient, if Madoka wants EVERY single girl to avoid becoming a witch. Even after the split, Homura said to Madoka in the school corridor that she does not think that "stability and order are more important than desire" and that she may be an enemy of Madoka someday. Homura thinks of herself to be objectively evil, and understands why others may see her as such. After all, the reason she split the LoC, was a reason that "no one in the world could possibly understand. This emotion is [hers] alone. It is for Madoka alone." Nevertheless, even if Homura understands that she is objectively evil, that doesn't mean that Homura THINKS of herself as being evil. No one in the world can understand, except for HERSELF. Homura believes herself to be in the right. She believes that Madoka deserves happiness. But this creates a conflict—she's "objectively" evil, and yet not at all evil. She copes with this confliction, by leaning into her "evilness". She creates an exaggerated facade. Hence, why the Clara dolls throw tomatoes at her. You can see here and here, some interpretations of the tomato scene. When it comes to the splitting on a meta level, you can me discussing the topic here. Someone's explanation of rebellion's ending: TLDR: Homura spent like 13 years repeating the same month over and over again just to save Madoka, only for her to fade out of existence to become a law of nature. She finally got her chance to "save" Madoka at the end of the film when the isolation field prevented Ultimate Madoka from becoming omnipresent. Thus, Homura was completely in character during Rebellion's ending. On Kyubey's civilisation: Incubators probably create and grow their newborns in incubating pods or something like this. Most humans research things out of curiosity; however, all incubators research and invent things for one purpose: to prevent or stall the eventual heat death of the universe. When it comes to dangerous situations, incubators do not need to run or hide. Kyubey was apathetic about being shot by Homura in ep 8. Why? Because he never died in the first place. They are a hive mind species, meaning that all bodies of Kyubey share the same consciousness. The moment he was killed, his other body ate himself like it was nothing, meaning that they have no care about themselves, as they can just replace each other. The only reason why they ran away from Homura in episodes 1 and 10, was mentioned in ep 8, they do not want to unnecessarily waste energy by unnecessarily destroying bodies. It is also possible that they wanted to take advantage of Madoka's kindness: by running to Madoka all worn down and injured, he appears as a gentle and sympathetic character. This would make Madoka trust him more, and would help him get her contracted faster. The creation of the first witch: The price for having your soul separated from your body (and gaining a near-invincible body in the process) is that your soul gem will eventually build up impurities from either strong negative emotions or physical injuries. Even if a magical girl avoided both, energy is needed to sustain the link between the body and the soul (due to them being separated), and this energy is taken from the soul gem, thus resulting in the build-up of impurities. This is why a magical girl can't just abandon their responsibilities (which are fighting witches and collecting/using their grief seeds) and run away; the impurities will eventually build up until they turn into a witch. The first magical girls probably became witches through either strong negative emotions, physical injuries, or not having any way to clean the impurities. After enough girls became witches, Kyubey told new magical girls that their 'noble role' was to eliminate the 'despair-spreading' witches, and thus the magical girl-witch system was established. Here are some additional underrated media that people often gloss over: -The 2 recap movies. They reanimate and add new music to scenes, and they are the perfect example of how to do a recap correctly. Also, Madoka is filled to the brim with foreshadowing that you won't notice your first time watching, so rewatching the series by using the recap movies is the best way to go. -If you're going to re-watch using the recap movies, I also suggest reading the amazing spin-off manga, 'The different story', beforehand. It is a prequel of sorts that shows the backstory between mami and Kyoko. The reason why I say to read it before the recap movies, is that the events in 'The Different Story' are hinted at in the anime, so you can pick up even more foreshadowing. -After that, I recommend the drama CDs. I talk about why and where you should watch them in this Reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/MadokaMagica/comments/rhv74d/madoka_drama_cd_collection_complete_edition/ -Some of the manga spin-offs. I have not finished all of the spin-offs yet, but the ones that I read and thought were worth recommending were the ones I rated an eight or above in my manga list. -Magia Record. It is an anime adapted from a video game. It has 3 seasons. Magia Record does not influence the main Madoka series, as both their game and anime were released after the Rebellion. I've only seen season 1 so far, and I thought it was kinda forgettable and boring, so I recommend binging the entire thing when the final season comes out. Though, I still do recommend watching it at some point, as there are rumours that it may influence the fourth Madoka film. -The wiki: https://wiki.puella-magi.net shows trivia and speculation on literally everything Madoka. Also, the page "Mami's mammies" was there until, unfortunately, it was deleted: http://web.archive.org/web/20210518045735/https://wiki.puella-magi.net/Mami's_mammies -I also suggest watching Princess Tutu, which aired way before Madoka. It has no connection with Madoka, but upon watching it it's clear that Madoka took some artistic inspiration from the series. For example, look at the dresses of the "evil" characters: homura, Crow1, crow 2 Tiro Finale! ξ(✿ >◡❛)ξ▄︻▇▇〓〓 ✨ Titles with a triple asterisk (***) are part of the main series (they are not optional). The animated chapters are more or less better than their manga counterparts, but a lot of one-liners are cut from the anime, so I suggest reading the chapters anyway if you have the time. I recommend this order: 1. Anime- Season 1 and Season 2*** 2. Television advertisement- Cup Ramen first episode and second episode 3. Anime- OVA 4. Anime- Season 3 Promotional Video - Yu Ishigami Wants to Talk 5. Anime- Season 3*** 6. Light novel- The Seven Mysteries of Shuchin Academy 7. Anime- The First Kiss Never Ends*** 8. Fanmade Hentai Doujinshi- Kaguya-sama’s Matchmaking Charm 9. Manga- All chapters in the "Not adapted" tab*** 10. Manga- Official Doujin 11. Manga- We Want To Talk About Kaguya-sama*** 12. Manga- Oshi no Ko This is the most optimum watch order for a first-time viewing, as it makes the franchise as chronological as possible, but also shifts shows around to keep the sense of foreshadowing and to not spoil important events and details. For The Clone Wars (2008) show, make sure to order it in chronological order; a list can be found here. You should end up with 134 episodes (including the 2008 movie as an episode). If you have the episode files downloaded, then you can choose to rename the files in chronological order by using an application like FileBot, and in the Preferences tab, you can choose Absolute order from the Episode order tab. However, Season 7 may need to be renamed manually. 1. Episode IV – A New Hope 2. Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back 3. Episode VI – Return of the Jedi 4. Episode I – The Phantom Menace 5. Episode II – Attack of the Clones 6. Clone Wars (2003): Anakin eventually becomes an official Jedi Knight of the Republic, then a short battle plays out, and then Padme strokes Anakin's scar. Stop at this point. 7. The Clone Wars (2008): Episodes 1-59 8. Clone Wars (2003): The rest of the show 9. Episode III – Revenge of the Sith 10. The Clone Wars (2008): Episodes 60-130 11. The Bad Batch: Season 1 12. Solo (bad reviews—can skip) 13. Rebels: Season 1 14. The Clone Wars (2008): Episodes 131-134 15. Rebels: Season 2 and Season 3 16. Rogue One 17. Episode Ⅷ – The Force Awakens 18. Rebels: Season 4 19. The Mandalorian: Season 1 and Season 2 20. The Book of Boba Fett (bad reviews) 21. Episode Ⅸ - The Last Jedi (bad reviews) 22. Episode X – The Rise of Skywalker (bad reviews) 23. Visions (This list does not have any content from 2022 and onwards, and won't ever, since I don't like Star Wars that much anymore. In a newcomer's shoes, I'd just follow this list and watch till The Mandalorian and then skip directly to the Visions anthology series. I've seen some bad stuff with Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Acolyte, so I'm not watching those. Maybe will check out Ahsoka just to see Ezra's fate, and may finish up with The Bad Batch. That what I already have watched from Gintama was very enjoyable, but I am not used to watch long Anime, so I am watching it very slowly. Gintoki is such a nice character!
Anyways, it is already two years since season 2 started???
Forget how fast time progresses, but I hope we will get Season 3 announced soon! Otto is really such a gigachad.
Are you watching anything seasonal this season, or do you always wait till all episodes are out?
I also love Sayaka, when she lost her notion of believing that her wish was selfless, she feels like if she was not worth staying with kyosuke. When Hitomi tells sayaka that she's in love with kyosuke, she clearly says that she doesnt want to steal him from her, asks her if she loves him and gives her some time to confess, but she doesn't. Her arc really hit for me. Also your analysis are great!
Also sorry for taking too long to answer, I was doing my final tests and I decided to not answer any messages until I had finished them all so I could focus on my studies. I'm from south america and because summer takes place in the end of the year and summer break happens in December and January.
I also love the tomoyo route OVA, it's my favorite OVA of all time. And I agree with the Kyou OVA being rushed and far worse than the Tomoyo route, but since I'm biased towards Clannad I still rated it really high..
My favorite villain is Meruem for Hunter x Hunter.
