Watching any other good shows?
I see, the reason I asked was because I was thinking of giving the new Berserk a second chance. I kinda want to see the rest of the 2016 anime, but it's a huge maybe for me.
How have you been doing?
Haha, honestly, I don't really think there are that many "mindscrew" anime that I can think of other than series that are popular on MAL (Evangelion, Lain, Texhnolyze, etc). I actually don't really enjoy anime like that anymore, I much prefer more straight-forward series. Honestly, I don't understand the mindset of the more an anime screws with your mind, the better. Sure, Serial Experiments Lain was a unique show and I gave it a high rating, but I definitely had more fun watching simpler shows.
I have thought of picking the new Berserk anime back up since it's finished, since maybe it's just the type of series I would enjoy watching more on my own pace, as opposed to watching it week by week. Then again, I should probably just continue reading the manga :D I'm just kinda slow when it comes to reading manga.
Have you ever read Zombiepowder? It's another manga series that Kubo created before Bleach, but I heard it was cut short before it got a decent ending. Might not be that great of a series, since I never hear anybody talk about it. I know right, isn't that supposed to be one of the main appeals of battle shounen anime? To have over the top battles that don't make sense? I'm shocked that DBZ fans get annoyed by stuff like that.
A lot of people generally agree that the second season of Queen's Blade is better than the first. From what I remember, it had more action scenes and had slightly better pacing. Of course, I didn't go into a series like that with high expectations or anything.
....yikes, I still haven't played Pokemon Y in weeks, but then again I don't really play video games during the week since I often get home late from school. Really should make time for Pokemon Y though, if I can at least.
Haha, well, the thing is that when I first started college and started meeting anime fans (since in high school, I only had two friends who watched anime) most of them talked about really popular titles like Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online. I was still relatively new to anime, so I was mainly just watching random shows that I had heard about for years but never watched, this including Evangelion. So, I ended up feeling that I was "above" mainstream anime fans, despite Evangelion being one of the most popular anime of all time, lol. It's actually kinda embarrassing thinking back, I remember meeting another student who liked anime, but he told me he loved shows like SAO, Future Diaries, and Code Geass. But my first question was like, "Really, ever watch Evangelion?" and he told me something like, "Oh, I seen the first three episodes, but dropped it since it just wasn't that interesting to me." I just remember being really annoyed and thought he had "bad taste," even though he was a really nice guy. Then there was the time when I obsessed with psychological anime and would try to bring them up when talking with my friends who also like anime. I even once asked my friend (who is a big Gundam fan) if Gundam Wing was like Evangelion because on MAL, one of it's genres is "Psychological." Man, that stuff makes me cringe looking back, shows how much I changed over the years, lol.
So, is the new transformation even called "Super Saiyan 4" or is called something else? I think it's the transformation where Goku's hair turns blue. Also, the idea of Goku with a beard sounds really weird to me, lol.
Wait, are you serious? But I thought Berserk just came off of hiatus, but now it's going back on it. Damn you Idolmaster, you've ruined everything! Haha, at least I still have plenty of chapters to catch up to. So, are you gonna watch the next season of Berserk? I can't believe it did well enough to get another season, but I guess it did well in Japan.
Yeah, I get what you mean, Bleach would have been better if it ended after Aizen was defeated. I still think this has to do with standards that DBZ seem to set, where Toriyama kept introducing more powerful villains after each arc. Then again, it was probably handled a bit better there than in Bleach. Still, I honestly don't go into battle shounens with high expectations, since I usually watch them for the fights, visuals, fun/badass characters, etc. Hey, do you ever get annoyed when people complain about battle shounens having realistic power levels or having battles that are predictable? I feel like that it can be cool to have a well-written shounen like HxH, but I still feel that some people forget that series like these aren't supposed to be super realistic.
To be fair, each character in DxD get more character development in the following seasons, so you might enjoy those more. I don't blame you if you decide not to continue watching it though, since I think it's kinda overrated for an ecchi series. My problem is that even in the later seasons, I realized that I just didn't care for the characters at all. The writers would try to insert drama into DxD and developed more of the characters, but I just couldn't take it seriously enough given how silly the premise was. That's actually why I also enjoyed Queen's Blade much more, it just felt more honest with itself and was much more enjoyable.
Exactly what happened with me, even if some of the shows I liked were reasonably popular or famous. Like if you're an anime fan, chances are you at least heard of Evangelion, for example. Yet here I was, acting like I was watching some kind of "underground" series that no one else have ever heard of, lol. You know what's weird? I have no idea why I thought I was "better" for liking "smarter" series, like it's just entertainment and I was taking it way too seriously. It's hilarious looking back though.
Oh yeah, I've seen that clip of Vegeta shaving his mustache a couple of times, that's the main reason why I want to watch GT. That and Super Saiyan 4, I'm actually kinda sad that transformation is no longer canon.
It's been awhile since I read Berserk (I know I said I would get back to it, but I haven't had much time recently). I have to admit, I kinda miss the Golden Age Arc, it was just...a simpler time, lol. Nah, but seriously, I really just miss seeing Guts fighting with the Band of the Hawks, while he was still friends with Griffith. Post-Eclipse is still good, I just miss the earlier chapters.
That seems to be everyone's opinion of Bleach, that the first few arcs are good, but it starts to drag after Aizen is defeated. Personally, I enjoyed the arc that happened after Aizen was defeated, at least what was shown in the anime. Although, I think it kinda sucks that the ending of Bleach received such a negative response from a lot of people, even heard a story that some guy burned all of his Bleach manga volumes in Japan and then posted photos of it online after the series ended.
Thanks for the rec, I added it to my plan to watch list.
So, I'm curious, what are your thoughts on Highschool DxD? I liked the first season, but didn't really care for the rest of the series as much. Especially the third season, since I didn't like how the show began to take itself so seriously, it just ruined the fun for me.
Haha, I think we all once went through a phase where we thought we were "superior" or "smarter" than other anime fans because of the shows that we watched. As dumb as it sounds, I went through a phase like that a few years ago when I was watching series like Evangelion, Ergo Proxy, and Serial Experiments Lain. Oh man, I remember even trying to talk about my "superior" shows with my IRL friends who like anime and it being awkward since I never wanted to watch "popular" shows that they were into, like Attack on Titan. Did that ever happen to you? It's kinda funny looking back, since I am against this attitude nowadays, especially since a lot of anime elitists tend to be very close-minded, probably just as much as any "tasteless casual." If you can't enjoy a show because it's not "deep" enough, then you're most likely being overly picky.
I figured that would be the case, since GT does seem like it would have some quality to it. I've seen plenty of clips online with Vegeta going through a midlife crisis in that show and they were hilarious, that's enough to make me check it out, lol. On top of that, Super Saiyan 4 looked really badass. I'll check it out even if it a lot of people say they don't like it, since I don't think it can be that bad.
Yeah, but honestly, I think I'll just stick with the manga. I mean, it's cool that you're getting some enjoyment out of the Berserk anime, but I really don't think it's for me. The thing is that I was going to watch episode 3 of Berserk, but I just couldn't build up the energy to do so. The series just gives me a weird vibe, not sure how to describe it.
Honestly, even though Bleach isn't the greatest series ever, I still kinda wished that I had been reading Bleach for years so that I could have been able to be "hyped" for the ending. For the last few weeks, that's what everyone was talking about, but I unfortunately didn't get into battle shounens until more recently. I did start the Bleach manga, but I'm only on chapter 11. Speaking of which, I really need to read more of Naruto, I'm only on chapter 50 on that.
Lol, nah, you're not an elitist for liking more experimental stuff. In fact, what I like about your taste is that you seem to like variety, like you can appreciate complex series like Evangelion and Lain, but also enjoy fun shows like Gurren Lagann and DBZ. In my opinion, that just shows that you enjoy anime and manga as a medium, rather than being overly picky and judgemental. Still, you should give Blame a go, you probably would like it a lot.
Exactly, that's why I'm not sure if I really want to watch Dragonball GT, even though I'm curious about it. I don't know if I ever told you this, but I sort of have this goal to watch every anime that was aired on Toonami and Adult Swim years ago, since I really feel like I kinda missed out it from being so young at the time. Unfortunately, that would mean that I would have to sit through all of DBGT to accomplish this goal, lol. Still, I'm glad to hear that DragonBall Super has gotten better, makes me more excited to give it a go in the future.
Well, I guess I will have to check out the original Sailor Moon then, if Crystal doesn't end up covering the entire manga.
Berserk....I dropped it after episode 2 :/ I'm sorry, but I really lost all motivation to watch it, since I don't think it is very good. The CGi animation kept bugging me and the censorship was annoying. On top of that, I realized that I'm at the point in the manga where Guts gets captured by Faranese, so I might as well read it instead. It sucks, since I was hyped for the new anime, but it was such a disappointment. In my opinion, they should have either stuck to adapting Berserk into movies or had done OVAs in the same way they did Hellsing Ultimate.
I know right, such a pretty picture of her. Speaking of Bleach, are you sad that the manga is ending (or has ended, depending on whenever you respond to this message, lol).
I don't know man, I just thought Blame was really abstract and it just kinda made it difficult for me to fully enjoy. It's a cool manga, but it wasn't something that I would put on my favorites list. On top of that, since there wasn't a lot of dialogue, I wasn't able to become attached to any of the characters. I honestly think it's just a manga that's just an acquired taste, but you might like it. I know a lot of people on MAL seem to think highly of it, so you might as well check it out.
Didn't Dragonball GT try to do the same thing? Like it tried to mix the old comedic writing of the original Dragonball series with the action that was in Dragonball Z? I heard mixed things about DBS, but it definitely has more fans than GT. I barely remember watching GT on Cartoon Network years ago, only saw very few bits and pieces of it.
Thanks for the heads up about Sailor Moon, I'll keep your recommendation in mind. I might watch the original, since I have made it a goal to watch every series that has aired on Toonami (at least the ones that aired years ago). Of course, I'm going to have to watch the show subbed, since they changed a lot of the story and characters in the dub version.
You know, I think I would have preferred Berserk to have either continued with movies or to have been made in OVAs. That way there would be less censorship or have a better budget. I'm sure the CG animation will become more tolerable over time, but it still looks kinda funky at times.
Blame was...interesting. Honestly, I'm not quite sure how I felt about it. The premise itself is intriguing, it's about a character named Killy who travels within a giant maze that's infested with different monsters. It mainly tells it's story through it's visuals and does not have a lot of dialogue. I don't know, it was a strange manga, but I gave it a 7 since I thought the presentation was cool.
Well, I heard that Battle of the Gods received mixed reactions from some people (that's the one where the main villain is angry that he didn't get pudding, right?). One of my IRL friends saw a premiere of it in theaters and said it was okay, but nothing too special. Honestly, after I finish DBZ (if I ever do, lol), I want to watch the original DragonBall series. I remember seeing it a lot on Toonami back in the day and thinking it was hilarious. Would you recommend the new Sailor Moon over the older series? I want to watch the older series, but it's very long, so I was thinking of just watching the new version.
Wow, so Re: Cutie Honey must be pretty crazy then. I'll have to give it a watch then, since I do love Gainax and how crazy their shows are. If it's based off of a Go Nagi manga, then it must be insane, lol.
I watched the first episode of Berserk today and thought it wasn't too bad. I'm not crazy about the CG animation, but it doesn't look too bad in my opinion. Did they really skip that much in the first episode? It's been a long time since I read the manga, so I only vaguely remember the chapters that this episode was based on. Although, I was not expecting this show to have a 6.26 on MAL, I guess people are really disappointed.
That's great! I should really get back to reading more of the Berserk manga, I haven't read it in a long time. I recently finished Blame though, which I have mixed feelings towards. Ever read it?
Lol, I'm not even halfway through with DBZ (currently at episode 123), so it will take me a long time to get to DBS. I've also heard mixed things about the recent Sailor Moon anime, so I'm not sure if it's something I would want to watch. What is Re Cutie Honey about? I have heard about this series before, but never took the time to read about it's premise.
Honestly, I think it's because I'm just growing up and have just lost interest in Pokemon all together. I literally have no motivation to play anymore of the games and I just can't never get invested in them anymore. I have tried out that new Pokemon fighting game a few months back and thought it was pretty good. The wrestler Pikachu was really awesome to play as, lol.
I actually don't mind the change in animation, since I have already seen the three Berserk movies. Although, I can imagine it being pretty hard for someone who has only seen the 1997 series. I was actually impressed by the latest trailer, since the frame-rate for the animation was much smoother than the first trailer.
So, have you been watching any good series recently? Anything to recommend?
