I was introduced to Anime & Manga when I attended the University of Arizona in 1987-1988, via the Tucson Anime Screening Society (TASS), a student group; they didn't have access to any subs or dubs, but a number of them were learning Japanese, so they produced synopsis that they handed out at each meeting so that we had a clue what was going on. Everything we saw was a fifth or sixth generation VHS copy, so the quality was pretty poor. However, it was still miles ahead of what I experienced with British Media Fandom, where the original was created by using a NTSC camcorder to film what displayed on a PAL TV, since Japan was also NTSC.
Hmm. Actually, now that I think of it, I had seen Star Blazers prior to that. But I hadn't had any contact with the relevant Fandom.
The Internet as we currently think of it didn't exist at that time. The IBM PC had just been released; I was using a Kaypro 4X myself, didn't get an IBM compatible until ~1990. USENET did exist, as did Compuserve, but I didn't have access to either.
Animag: The Magazine of Japanese Animation was the best source of English language information available.
The world has really changed in regard to what is accessible in the United States since then.
