If you value ethical framing, narrative momentum, and tonal consistency, my ratings will probably make sense to you.
My Rating Scale:
- I rate anime and manga by season or volume, not as a single series. A strong start does not automatically promote later entries, especially if there are major tone shifts, narrative shifts or character rewrites.
- I am currently rewatching some series to review past ratings. Some series I once found “boring” were judged while I was tired or when I was younger and had less patience. On rewatch, I sometimes appreciate series more than I did in the past.
- My ratings reflect my personal values and narrative preferences, not an attempt at objective truth. If you share similar preferences, you may find my notes or reviews useful.
General preferences & dealbreakers:
- I usually watch dubbed anime when it's available.
- I value tonal consistency. Dark or serious scenes should have tension respected, not have abrupt switches into slapstick or gag humor.
- I dislike nudity or fanservice used for sex appeal or cheap humor. Adult, restrained, or narratively meaningful nudity can be fine.
- I’m not interested in stories that focus solely on human depravity (assault, abuse, murder) without clear narrative purpose or ethical framing. Being stylish or “cool” isn’t enough on its own.
- I generally avoid slow slice-of-life series that lack forward momentum or narrative direction. If nothing is changing and the goal is only to “enjoy the vibe,” I tend to disengage.
- In short, I gravitate toward stories that respect their own stakes, characters, and the audience’s attention, even when the subject matter is heavy or uncomfortable.
10 – Masterpiece - Emotionally and technically exceptional. Deep enough to revisit and meaningfully shapes how I view anime / manga.
9 – Excellent - Loved it deeply. Cohesive writing, consistent tone and meaningful character arcs. Minor imperfections don't disrupt immersion or themes.
8 – Great - Strong writing and emotional impact with some noticeable weaknesses (e.g. specific arcs, pacing dips, underdeveloped elements).
7 – Good - Has clear strengths and meaningful ideas, but are partially painful to finish due to pacing, tonal issues, fanservice, or ethical disagreements. I may finish these out of curiosity rather than enjoyment alone, and many are partial drops.
6 - Not my Style - Typically a highly rated title by many, but I can't get into it. Some reasons include voyeuristic or slapstick humor, excessive fanservice, slow or stagnant pacing, vibes-over-logic storytelling, or ethical framing that I find unconvincing.
5 - Not Engaging - Unpleasant / unengaging. Limited narrative, emotional, or theme impact. Difficult to stay invested.
4 - Flawed - Mediocre with visible value, but mostly has tone or ethical problems.
3 - Poor - Major ethical or structural failure with only minor redeeming elements.
2 - Intolerable - Fundamentally exploitative or ethically intolerable, overriding any craft.
1 - Nothing - No artistic or experience value whatsoever.
Side Notes for Anyone Curious:
- All of the manga in my 'On Hold' list don't have official English translations.
- When an anime has both subbed and dubbed versions available, I test the dub first and switch to sub if the character voices seem exaggerated or mismatched. If subtitle reading interferes with comprehension or pacing, I switch back to the dub to preserve clarity.
- While I created my account and started watching anime a while ago, I didn't really start using MAL until 2025.
