Haha, yeah—Boku no Pico is basically the internet’s shared trauma. Curiosity won that round and I noped out instantly; never again.
I’m not into yaoi or yuri hentai either—those genres just aren’t for me. I do love a well-told boys-love or girls-love romance, but most of what I stumble across leans way too hard into fanservice; I want feelings, not ecchi or erotica ;_;

I haven’t actually watched Onani Master yet, but your “perverted-villain-turned-sincere” pitch (plus that surprise romance you mentioned) has me weirdly intrigued—will definitely check it out XD

Right now I’m juggling Bleach, started watching more One Piece episodes, and I actually started a cozy Sailor Moon re-watch yesterday for some sparkly nostalgia between all the shounen chaos.

Totally feel you on old anime sticking in the brain—those hand-painted backgrounds and slower burns just etch themselves into memory. Sadly it will never come back :(

haha “Fap Note” is honestly such a wild nickname but… yeah, I can totally see why people call it that now after your explanation XD
And omg you noticed that? (⁄⁄>ᴗ<⁄⁄) yes, Boku no Pico was one of those “I need to see what the internet’s been warning me about” moments—pure curiosity, instant regret LOL. definitely a one-time experience for the culture

I really love how you described Onani Master Kurosawa though! that “perverted villain who redeems himself” angle sounds really compelling actually—those morally gray stories where the character truly grows always get me. (˘︶˘).。*♡ I’ll definitely check out the others you mentioned too, My Dearest Self With Malice Aforethought sounds especially interesting since I love darker psychological stuff.

and yesss I completely agree about Your Name vs 5cm per Second! I enjoyed Your Name for the spectacle, but 5cm just hurts in that slow, beautiful way—you feel the distance, the years, the fading connection. that kind of melancholy sticks with you. (´;ω;`)

also thank you for the Spice and Wolf tip!! I’ll go for the old one dub first like you said~ I love when the English dub actually adds personality to the dialogue rather than flattening it. and honestly, you buying that anniversary edition is so relatable—expensive fandom decisions are a true act of love ( ̄▽ ̄*)ゞ

and yesss emotional fights >>> flashy ones every time!! that Bakugo vs Deku fight was perfection—the frustration, respect, jealousy all boiling over like that was pure storytelling gold. I miss when MHA hit that kind of emotional depth

and haha no worries—you don’t come off elitist at all! your passion just really shines through, and I love that you can articulate why something works for you instead of just “it’s good.” that’s my favorite kind of convo honestly! (˶ˊᵕˋ˵)

btw, since you mentioned Welcome to the NHK being nostalgic but kind of heavy, would you say it’s more existential like Ping Pong the Animation or more grounded slice-of-life depression like March Comes in Like a Lion? trying to mentally prepare myself before diving in haha

Ahhh, thank you for explaining everything with so much patience and detail! (´∀`)♡ I think I understand Izumi's perspective a little better now, even if my heart still gets a bit tangled up thinking about it. You're right that love and attraction can be separate things, and what truly matters is the loyalty and commitment you choose every day. It's a very mature way of looking at things! Though I'll probably always be a hopeless romantic who wants the emotional and physical to be perfectly aligned for my favorite characters, hehe~ (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)

And wow, reading 32 chapters in one go without even stopping for dinner... that's some legendary dedication! (☆▽☆) I peeked at the synopsis for Onani Master Kurosawa and... let's just say my cheeks went a little pink, ehe! It sounds... intense! But it's really cool that it left such a strong impression on you. Maybe one day when I'm feeling extra brave!

Your insight about the 5CM train scene honestly kind of healed my heart a little! Knowing it was a metaphor for them both moving on separately, and not a cruel trick of fate where they just missed each other... that makes Takaki's smile so much more powerful. It’s still bittersweet, but it feels more peaceful and resolved now. Thank you for telling me that!

Your Name is magical and thrilling, but 5CM... it just carves a little space in your heart and lives there forever, doesn't it? It’s in a league of its own for pure, raw emotion. Also, hearing how much you love Spice and Wolf that you bought the super expensive anniversary edition... that's so incredibly cool and passionate! It makes me even more excited to finally start it. And I feel exactly the same way about fight scenes—without emotional weight and strong principles behind them, even the flashiest animation feels empty. Power-ups fueled by nothing but "friendship" just make me sigh... (´-ω-`) Ooooh, Oregairu, Psycho-Pass, AND Welcome to the NHK? You really have the best taste! Even tho i havent watched it i heard a lot of good things about those series.

Thank you again for being so wonderful to talk with and for sharing all your thoughtful insights! It's given me a lot to think about, and I feel like I understand a little more about storytelling—and even people—now. You're the best! ♡(>ᴗ•)

Thank you so much for taking the time to elaborate on all of this! ♡ I can definitely see your perspective on the teenage behavior in Araburu - you're absolutely right that it was realistic in many ways, but for me some scenes were just too uncomfortable and overly sexual for me, which made it hard to enjoy. And the ending felt pretty disappointing :( I did really love the relationship between Sonezaki and Amagi though - they were adorable together! But Izumi's storyline was so frustrating to watch. At first he had feelings for Kazusa, and I thought it would develop similarly to Sonezaki and Amagi's sweet relationship. But then Niina appeared and started pursuing him in these really intense ways, basically using her sexuality to try to win him over. And then Izumi said he loved Kazusa emotionally but was physically attracted to Niina like... what?? That whole dynamic felt really messy and problematic to me - like it oversimplified these complex relationships into just emotional versus physical attraction categories

OMG thank you for these incredible recs!! Also, I actually watched 5 Centimeters Per Second after reading your recommendation and wow, you were absolutely right about that empty feeling it leaves you with! It hit me so much harder than I expected - that whole theme about growing apart from people you care about really got to me. The way it captured how life just naturally pulls people in different directions, even when you desperately want to hold onto those connections, felt so painfully real.
But honestly, the ending was so disappointing! I kept hoping throughout the entire movie that Takaki and Akari would somehow find their way back to each other, especially during that train crossing scene - I was literally holding my breath thinking this was finally their moment to reconnect. But then those passing trains separated them again and they just... walked away from each other. I know it's a drama for a reason and supposed to be realistic about how some relationships just don't work out, but ugh, my heart wanted that reunion so badly!
The whole experience was bittersweet though - like you said, there's something about watching it alone without distractions that makes it hit different. Those quiet moments and internal monologues really drew me in, and I found myself thinking about my own past relationships and the people I've drifted away from. It's beautifully made but definitely left me feeling melancholic for days afterward. Overall it was really well done, just emotionally devastating in a way I wasn't fully prepared for. But it was really realistic and now i understand why people like it so much! Thank you very very much for recommending me this :D

Emma sounds cute! ♡ I'm such a sucker for period pieces with thoughtful character development, and the fact that you've rewatched it multiple times in different stages of your life speaks about its lasting impact. There's something special about shows that can grow with you and reveal new layers as you get older and gain more life experience. The way you describe the struggle with feelings and class differences sounds so compelling - I love when romance anime takes the time to really explore the social and emotional barriers characters face rather than just glossing over them (⸝⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝⸝)
And I totally get what you mean about usually not liking the poor girl/rich man trope! It can feel so formulaic when it's not handled thoughtfully. But when a story takes the time to make both characters feel real and their connection feel earned, it can be incredibly moving.

Spice and Wolf has been on my list forever! Hearing that the dub is actually comparable or even better. Thanks for the heads up about the remake too - it's always disappointing when a remake loses the atmosphere and music that made the original special. There's something about that original early 2000s anime aesthetic and sound design that just hits different sometimes.
You clearly have such thoughtful taste in emotional storytelling! ♡ These two sound perfect for when I want to feel deeply moved by something beautiful rather than just entertained. Do you have any other hidden gems in the drama/romance space? I love psychological series too so im also open for that! I'm always looking for shows that prioritize character development and emotional depth over flashy action or comedy~

Thanks so much for accepting, and for asking so kindly! (´∀`)♡

Ahh, I totally get why you loved Araburu—it's such a unique and emotionally bold show, and the animation is gorgeous!! ✧ For me, personally, I struggled with some of the character choices and how certain themes were handled toward the end... it just didn’t click with me emotionally like I hoped it would. Was really disappointed.. (sorry!) (´• ω •̥`)

But I love that you enjoyed it!! It honestly makes me happy when people find deep meaning in shows—even if I rated it low, I still think there's so much to appreciate about it!! ♡(◕ᗜ◕✿)

Speaking of which… since you reached out to me, do you have any underrated drama/romance anime recs? I’d love to hear what else moved you!! :3
