Hello, I'm ma1kawa11, I critique film/anime from a Leftist's perspective as a hobby. I am also a musician and composer.
I hope you enjoy my profile. If you like what I do, please also check out my blog: Periodic Prattling If you'd like to send me a friend request, please attach a note to it :) Recent Reviews: My Hero Academia: Final Season Dr. Stone Science Future Part 2 Feel free to send me recommendations if you have any. Here is a list of anime types I'm looking out for: - Any anime with soundtracks primarily consisted of Minimalist, Post Minimalist, and atonal music such as 12 tone (serialist) or spectral. I am also looking for Avant Garde or Experimental music soundtracks. - Any Obscure anime, OVAs, ONAs, etc. Something at least past popularity rating 1000 on MAL, and not within the top 250 in the highly rated page. - Anything Avant Garde, Experimental, or Surrealist that I haven't seen yet. - Anime with tragic endings, tragedies. The main cast doesn't necessarily have to die, but the ending should be tragic. - Anime with ambiguously good or bad endings on a similar level to Carpenter's "The Thing" - Anime where the main character, or a side character, has a negative mental spiral into insanity in a way that is permanent and not retconned. - Anime released between 1995-2010. - Has psychological, philosophical, or existential themes. - Gag or Slapstick comedy. Please do NOT recommend me something if it matches the following criteria unless you are absolutely certain I would love it. - Is on my plan to watch list - Is in a franchise that has more than 100 episodes - Is more than 100 episodes long. - Would have relations to other anime that would in total exceed 100 total episodes following the trail of that anime. - Is an Isekai, physical sports anime, or Battle Shonen - Is Ecchi, Hentai, or is a fanservice anime. - If it's one of those romances where the end of the series is just the characters finally saying "I Love you" to each other. - Is the Nth other slice of life school anime. - Is the Nth new fantasy anime but technically isn't an Isekai. - A horror anime that only focuses on gore. I like horror that has existential or psychological implications in real life, I don't enjoy gore for the sake of it. - Currently airing seasonal anime, or seasonal anime that was aired this year. I look at those myself if something interests me normally. So please if you are aware of something I haven't seen yet with this kind of music please give me a rec in my profile comments :) I am an advocate for a Non-Monetary Economy. I would not consider myself to be communist but I would consider Communists, Marxists, and Socialists to be a close ally. I am anti-authoritarian, but not anarchist or libertarian. I am a moral anti-realist and non-objectivist. I am a feminist and support LGBTQ+ rights. My critiques therefore are mostly politically focused based on this leftist perspective. I dock points for things I consider authoritarian supportive, and visa versa. I care a lot about the presentation of a series and how it maintains its atmosphere. Generally speaking this is through the consistency of the art style and the soundtrack. I believe the presentation should follow the genre and themes of the series, because it elevates the watching experience higher than what it would be otherwise. Secondly, a cohesive and well thought plot is very important to me. The kinds of serious plots I enjoy the most are ones that are philosophical, and cover psychological or existential topics. In comedy, or nonserious shows, I enjoy slapstick or gag humor the most. I tend to favor watching shows that were produced around the turn of the millennium, because it has a unique art style which I enjoy. I also very much enjoy hand drawn animation produced between the 80s and 90s. I do enjoy some anime that is produced more recently, however that tends to be in more of a limited capacity. I tend to not actively watch airing seasonal anime besides the franchises which I have already dipped into or unless something in particular interests me. I judge an anime based considering multiple factors, based on different topics of design of which there is an outline below: Overall: (X/10)
There are a few types of things which significantly affect my rating of a show other than the rubric that is shown above to the point where a score my drop by a full point or more if depicted in a show:
Additional Notes:
I define my scores fairly obviously, I follow the general idea behind myanimelist descriptions of each number. This number is determined by my rating rubric. Following is a slightly more elaborate description of how I define the myanimelist score system.
So hopefully this gives a bit of an idea what I think when I give a show a number. I judge series both on a rough bell curve and by my standards as I've described above. This means that my rating of shows is influenced by the total number of shows I've seen. Since I am aiming for a bell curve, as the number of shows I have seen goes up, the mean score of shows will tend to approach between 5. However in application, my mean tends to be balanced between 4-6. This is because while I try to be balanced in the shows I am watching and my rating of a show, because I enjoy anime, I have a natural bias to watch shows that I am interested in. This means that my curve will always be slightly skewed, though with my rating system this has been somewhat mitigated. However, because MAL does not separate things such as promotional videos, music, and specials from the list, I'm not sure how accurate this will stay towards a bell curve since I value my ratings of those shows much differently. Below is my current distribution of scores: I define my favorites as following: Manga/Anime: My Manga/Anime favorites are purely subjective based on my enjoyment of the show. I don't follow any of my guidelines for ratings with my favorites, so while my favorites tend to be things I've rated highly, it doesn't necessarily mean that they will always be the most highly rated. Characters: My favorite Manga/Anime Characters are primarily chosen through a combination of how well I think the character was written, and how well I can relate to them. Does not necessarily mean that they are from my favorite anime/manga and also doesn't mean I rate the show more highly. People: This section is dedicated purely to my favorite composers from anime I've seen. Companies: These are a list of production companies that are generally behind anime that I have rated highly or are on my favorites list. Drop: I do not drop anime, if I watch or complete a first episode I will complete it and give it a rating. If I do not finish something I will add it to an "On Hold" section to watch later. I do not rate shows I have not completed because I do not have a full perspective on the show and all of its strengths and weaknesses. Hold: If for some reason I have not finished a show, I will put that show on hold. While on hold the show will not receive a rating. I do not have any timeline where I may finish a show, but I do plan at some point to finish watching it. Watch Policy: I watch everything to completion with only a few exceptions. Those are recaps and summaries / alt. versions. If it is a recap and I already have seen all the scenes in it, I will automatically add it to my list because I have seen those scenes, as it is just added to mal for courtesy separately for some reason. If the recap is in a format where it contains new scenes, I will watch those new scenes in exclusion and consider it fully watched. Instead of dropping content, the way I deal with completionism without going insane is to watch it at higher speeds. I will write notes in a description of every anime I watch to give my opinions on it. There's no rules/regulations I have on my self for how long these notes may be. Please keep in mind, that if I've only written down 'meh' or other 1liners on the notes and the score is between 3-5ish I probably just found it to be boring or disinteresting in some way. Also please keep in mind for shorts with notes like that, if they are for something obscure or extremely old I probably could not find it in subtitles so it would be hard for me to talk with you about the anime since I literally don't have the translation to understand plot points. Otherwise, I may/may not be able to talk about the anime, it will depend on how much it stuck out to me among the large amount of anime shorts I've seen, so please do not be surprised if I'm not like, able to hold a conversation for those ones. If you have read a review or a post of mine and disagree, feel free to criticize me! I'm always open to hearing other people's viewpoints, and I also want to refine my own skills at reviewing shows. Just please keep these things in mind when criticizing me:
With that in mind, I totally look forward to hearing your opinions! :D |

Nuanced discussion is great and I'm sure there's some impressionable people who see The Punisher or Batman as model citizens they wanted to emulate. The vast majority though, suspend their disbelief pretty generously when watching people in tight-spandex, beat down a gothy supervillain trying to take over the world. I don't know of anybody who actually thinks Batman breaking criminal's bones is ideal behavior when it comes to how to deal with all criminals in real life.
Then again, you may not enjoy most superhero media since justice is often displayed in such a simplistic way. I'm well aware in other series such as HxH or Monster, the setting and characters are more morally grey and the stories are written in such a way where justice doesn't actually matter.
Anyways, that was the last thing I wanted to point out. If you don't like most battle shounen that's perfectly understandable in my book.
I think I've wasted enough of your time. Have a good one. And (late) happy New year.
You're saying its important to watch things you dislike or hate if you want to become better at critique? That would depend on how the reviews themselves are done.
Reviews can be as long as you want. A summary that doesn't actually tell people why a series is bad or why its good, isn't helpful. If I never knew anything about MHA, I wouldn't be able to gather anything from your review besides Mineta being a degenerate. Even the complaint about OFA and AFO being a bastardization of the classic book because some Japanese author thought the two names were cool, isn't very helpful. Those kinds of references can be found all over the media you consume.
I would have to watch it myself (making the Not Recommended harsh post, pointless). I mean, you've written longer reviews with better details elsewhere.
But like you said If this is supposed to improve your critique abilities or make you appreciate the things you believe are good, its true: it really is up to you how you use your time.
I thought about writing my own reviews. But then I also think people shouldn't trust what random strangers say online and should ultimately watch/read things for themselves.
As for watching more series than me, I doubt it but then again, I don't post all what I've seen on MAL here.
There's so many shows out there to review but you only pick extremely popular ones, which says alot.
Also I see from your list that you didn't like Umineko compared to Higurashi but I highly recommend you to read the visual novel or the manga if you haven't already.
It's genuinely one of the best pieces of literature ever written, and the anime is one of the worst adaptations ever made, they adapted the first 75h of reading in just 24eps.
If you maybe one day decide to read it just stick till the end because it's not too much about cold mystery solving and horror like Higurashi, but it's much more about hidden and layered themes and philosophies. I can't spoil anything but I think you'd definitely like it by the end.
Just one more additional info about it, the music is also masterful, the visual novel has over 200 phenomenal soundtracks and there's a fanmade app that plays them with the manga as well.
And just a warning: a mod will probably remove your review as soon as they see it. I don't doubt that someone's already reported it by now. This site doesn't like it when you're too mean-spirited and use too many naughty words. A few of my older reviews were similar, and they were all unceremoniously deleted.
That is NOT cool; I love that little guy. He's so funny.
lmao, that's the best way to describe Mineta
You really tore into the show though, holy shit. I agree with some aspects of your review, even though it's a bit too harsh as I do believe there are some pretty good themes in the show, especially the Todoroki family plotline was pretty good, even though some other ideas felt lackluster
