Oh LOL I didn't mean an etymological explanation, it's just that in Duolingo は is introduced as being "ha" but the voice always says "wa." It's weird that the mismatched pronunciation doesn't get acknowledged at all, and it's even worse because は is actually pronounced "ha" sometimes, even in one of the examples given (ohayou).

That's pretty much what I meant, going line by line and coming up with mnemonics. Maybe learning both kanas at the same time isn't the best idea in general, but I want to give it a try. I'm mostly going to be reading, and when I write, it'll be on the computer, so getting them mixed up won't be much of an issue.

LOL how did you freak people out? And don't they generally understand English?

I'll watch it eventually since it seems to be a pretty iconic franchise. I actually like cheesy and fun, at least in moderation.

I wonder if it might be better for me in particular to take a more systematic approach though, for instance learning hiragana and katakana together. Since I already have a decent amount of vocabulary and grammar picked up, I think my focus should be on internalizing the kana chart and learning the most common kanji. The sporadic hiragana introductions and matching games don't seem like the best way to do this.

I haven't seen the show, but Mew Ichigo is certainly very cute. Seems like a good choice to me.

Yeah, I went to a prep school, and we also had Russian, Arabic, and classical Greek in addition to the more common ones. Latin in particular was a big deal, it was supposedly really tough and there were special awards for the students who did well.

I remember some of the French I learned, or rather I think I could recover most of it with some review. I definitely didn't get in as much practice as I should have though, I mostly just focused on getting good enough scores on written tests.

How are you studying Japanese online?

I haven't seen many shows with TL notes, but I can see those being annoying, especially if they're pointless. I remember Nourin having a full page of TL notes at the end of each episode, but those don't really count since they aren't interrupting anything.

Italics maybe (please), but I don't know if mistakes are really fading. Really dumb ones, probably, but just a couple days ago I found a significant mistake in Just Because which is currently airing. Smile Precure has also had some questionable word/phrasing choices on a consistent basis.

Overall that sounds pretty normal LOL. I mean even being obsessed with a character and wanting to "become her" is more cute than weird. It sounds like a typical and relatively tame chuunibyou thing. Do you mind telling who it was?

I'm sorry to hear that things aren't really getting better for dubs though.

Yeah, I bet 4 years of Japanese helps a lot. I don't think I'm a slow reader, but the fact remains that we can only focus on a small part of the screen at a time and shifting our attention to the subs at the bottom does interrupt the experience a bit. It's better if you aren't relying on the subs as much because you can listen without much effort. It seemed like the cultured choice at the time, but boy am I regretting taking French instead of Japanese in high school.

LOL I also find subs to be wrong fairly often and it's pretty annoying. I also hate the use of italics, you're literally already hearing their intonation, do you really need to then make the subs even more distracting?

How do you feel about and relate to female characters? How do you feel about their cuteness?

Okay, I get it now. Those are pretty legitimate reasons to not approve of the dub LOL. I fully agree that they shouldn't localize too much, I mean it just doesn't make sense to import a show only to turn around and make it as generic as possible. And yep, children would likely only find the cultural elements interesting and engaging.

On a kind of related tangent, I've become more and more aware of how watching with subs does distract from the experience. As in, I find that there is a difference between consciously focusing on all of the visuals versus lazily "reading" anime. The good news is that I've picked up enough Japanese that I can watch without subs. The bad news is that doing so is exhausting and requires pauses to figure things out and look stuff up that I don't understand. I feel like I should force myself to do this more and also learn some Japanese properly. But I also want to just take it easy when watching chinese cartoons LOL. What do you think? Have you had a similar experience?

Re: sleeping with Cures, I'd say it depends on how creepy and serious they are about it. Speaking for myself, I totally have a crush on Nao but it's not really sexual, more like admiration? I think she's a great character and super cute, so being attracted to her kind of comes as part of the package. LOL maybe I'm exactly the kind of weird you're talking about.

Is the Netflix thing really that bad? Only thing I've seen is the opening song which was pretty catchy.
Yeah, it is unfortunate that animation is still seen as primarily a kiddy thing in the west.

I was actually planning on watching Suite after Smile, though probably with a break since I'll likely be burnt out by all the rainbows. The music theme looks very cool.

It seems that Precure is much more mainstream in Japan compared to the international anime community. For instance literally none of my MAL friends have Smile Precure anywhere on their lists even though a lot of them like slice-of-life shows and would very likely enjoy it. Not a huge sample size, but I think it's reflective of the general trend.

I honestly don't mind watching childish stuff occasionally. Thanks for the heads-up though, it's nice to know for when I decide to watch the movies.

You're right, it's my first "normal" mahou shoujo series. I actually started in anime with Madoka, and I've liked all of the dark/seinen mahou shoujo series I've seen. But it's kind of unfair to not know what the genre is supposed to be like without all the suffering and whatnot. So I finally steeled myself, did a bit of research, and chose Smile Precure since it looked the most accessible and I liked the designs a lot.

I didn't go in with any preconceptions, but it still surprised me how the show isn't really that different from the typical otaku-ish stuff that I usually watch. As in, yes, the OP is literally just "Smile" and "Precure" over and over and that's a bit different, but otherwise it feels the same as any other slice-of-life anime. And the plot, comedy, conflicts, and motivations all have just as much depth, at least they have so far.

What do you think, as a mahou/shoujo veteran?
