Anime has been a part of my life for longer than it has not. Kimba the White Lion, Astro Boy, and Candy Candy were the first anime I watched, thanks to my mother's budding interest in anime when she was a child. But it was not until around 2015 that I began to indulge in anime on my own accord. I much prefer older anime, from their style to more muted tones, something is calming and almost nostalgic about these styles. As such, the average year of my favorite anime is 2007, and for manga, it is 2008. After being obsessed with anime, I became engrossed in manga, and then moved onto manhua and finally manhwa. I took a huge break from anime in 2019, partially because I was unhappy with certain themes very common in anime. I began enjoying anime again in 2024. Before I made this account, I did not interact with the anime community outside of my friends and YouTube. I am happy to be here and to explore more and more within this community!
(wait its the fact that all my favorites have an average score over 8 besides astro boy, ㅠ.ㅠ i promise its still good. dont ask me if the scores are biased, they probs are bc of course ppl will rank their favs higher, and most of mine are relatively obscure. BUT astroy boy was created by the father of anime.. com'on guys)
- PAUSE im going to be in korea for business all of next year, and while I can read manhwa i wont be able to access any of the english anime or even netflix.... should i invest in it?

RANT ABOUT MANHUA
ugh I miss the time before around 2017/8 when I was super into colored comics aka webtoons (manhwa and manhua) because I used to read so many manhua, and all unofficially because the mainstream websites don't have many Chinese webtoons.
And this also makes me sad because it's hard to find manhua unless it's fan-translated. and I remember that yellow icon app that used to be so good, and now it's all digitized and full of ads like the webtoon app is. I've been meaning to learn Mandarin (not that this is the only reason), but I guess this is just another reason to add to the list.
there are so many good stories that just aren't pushed into the mainstream because it's oversaturated with so many other comics, and so many stories that are five ten years old that have the same themes as super popular ones now. and it sucks too bc i found like 20 manhua i used to read and I cannot even notate them here bc they were never officially translated, i guess its good that many of them have OVA's but its a diff experience ANYWAYS. Here are a couple i used to rlly like when i was like... a tween
These are shonen and dao cultivation-based: Battle Through The Heavens, Star Martial God Technique (ONA linked), Tales of Demons and Gods (ONA linked), The Heaven’s List, Meng Shi Zai Shang (female mc) highly recommend this one too Soul Land II (and for these, if you really like that overly powerful MC's that keep on growing, these stories are for you)
These are shojo romances: Qishi Huanxiang Ye, Starry Night Club, Chasing the Sun, Prince, Don’t Do This!, Tian Mei De Yao Hen, Goddess Creation System, Zhiran Chenghun, The Rebirth of Noble: Revenge, Full Marks Hidden Marriage: Pick Up a Son, Get a Free Husband, Thousand Endless Rains from Faraway Mountains, This Girl is a Little Wild. OMG OMG and Wo zai hougong dang ju ju, A Big Shot in the Imperial Palace (edit right here, all im going to say if you liked Apothecary Diaries, which directly takes from Chinese imperial culture, you should try some of these as well bc they are in the same setting, and well, actually from China.)
I am not going to lie to you and say these are the best ever, no. but i liked them when i was younger
And note all of these stories are along the same lines as the now popular manhwa (webtoons) out there now when these were written first, so like, give it a try pretty plz!!
