That's eerily close to how I feel about Elfen Lied, one of my favorite series which I gave a 9/10 (and I don't have a huge amount of them, as my mean ratings score is 6.73). Another thriller, among other things. In a way I see it as less flawed than Babylon but only because it was aiming lower. It raises a lot of subplot threads that are just dropped, abandons the need for proper build up, and just often goes for the low hanging fruit and shock value, gut punch after gut punch for maximum emotional impact, but boy does it achieve it (at least in my case). I love great writing, but if an anime can inspire thought-provoking ideas and conversations and make me feel powerful visceral emotions then it's still beautiful art regardless, in my view.
And that's why I always see the ratings as very individual/personal and subjective. At times I'll add or subtract a point or two for technically impressive animation and the visuals, sound design and editing, etc., but the near-entire bulk of the score is how much it could personally resonate with me. That's why even some series I have very little to criticize about on a technical level but just don't foster personal investment in me I give like a 6 or whatnot, depending.
Just noticed and read your review of Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne. Concur with that one as well. I gave that one a 2/10. It's one of only four series out of like 320 I've ever given a 2 (I don't have any 1s).
I agree with your review of Babylon almost line by line, word for word. But then I'm confused as to why you gave it a 9/10 at the end, since I thought you were pointing out quite glaring issues with the writing in general in terms of the construction of the whole plot. Issues either the same or very similar and overlapping with those I've had and voiced myself regarding the series, and seen from various others. But then it wasn't reflected in the numerical rating. My first impulse or instinct would be to just assume you rate on the higher side or very high in general, which is true for a lot of people. But then coming across your other recently seen and rated anime as well as your average score figures, I saw it wasn't the case.
Anyway, of course you can rate anything whatever you want. I was just curious about that. There was a lot I loved about Babylon and I, for instance, rated it a 5/10, which hurt my heart to do.

Thanks for the response!
