Robots are making their mark in the world and involve a creation of a relationship between man and robots. Both have "special" robots which show how they are different compared to other "lifeless" robots.

Both shows can make you cry. Both involve cute robot girls.
One is a post-apocalyptic setting, the other is one where personal robots have been integrated into society. Planetarium's universe never evolved to be as permissive/progressive about robots as Chobits. Chobits could easily be a romcom and has very human-like robots but Planetarium is more somber and has robot-y robots. Chobits has none of the politics and messy human behavior from Planetarium: it has a different kind of messy human behavior.
